Cognitive Coaching: Developing Teachers of English as Self-directed Learners

Süleyman Davut Göker,Mübeher Ürün Göker 아시아영어교육학회 2021 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.18 No.3

Innovative and leadership-based learning environments proposed by Education 4.0 have created new tasks for teachers to take greater ownership of change to survive in both digital and physical classrooms. These tasks require teachers to increase their cognitive development and teacher sense of efficacy (TSE). Within this context, teachers as self-directed learners with high levels of sense of efficacy and a more efficient cognitive development are the best agents of change in creating innovative learning opportunities for both themselves and learners as demanded by Education 4.0. This single case study based on pre/post test design aims to examine the impact of a cognitive coaching program developed by the researchers on cognitive and TSE development of pre-service EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers in the Turkish EFL context. Overall, the program had a significant impact on TSE development of teacher candidates and coaching skills concerned with their cognitive development, self-directedness, self-modification, and self-reflection.

Determining the optimum process parameter for grinding operations using robust process

Süleyman Neseli,Đlhan Asiltürk,Levent Çelik 대한기계학회 2012 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.26 No.11

We applied combined response surface methodology (RSM) and Taguchi methodology (TM) to determine optimum parameters for minimum surface roughness (Ra) and vibration (Vb) in external cylindrical grinding. First, an experiment was conducted in a CNC cylindrical grinding machine. The TM using 27 L orthogonal array was applied to the design of the experiment. The three input parameters were workpiece revolution, feed rate and depth of cut; the outputs were vibrations and surface roughness. Second, to minimize wheel vibration and surface roughness, two optimized models were developed using computer-aided single-objective optimization. The experimental and statistical results revealed that the most significant grinding parameter for surface roughness and vibration is workpiece revolution followed by the depth of cut. The predicted values and measured values were fairly close, which indicates 2 ( 94.99 Ra R = and 2 92.73) Vb R = that the developed models can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and vibration in the grinding. The established model for determination of optimal operating conditions shows that a hybrid approach can lead to success of a robust process.

Decreased Prolidase Activity in Patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

        Süleyman Demir,Mahmut Bulut,Abdullah Atli,I·brahim Kaplan,Mehmet Cemal Kaya,Yasin Bez,Pınar Güzel Özdemir,Aytekin Sır 대한신경정신의학회 2016 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.13 No.4

ObjectiveaaMany neurochemical systems have been implicated in the development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The prolidase enzyme is a cytosolic exopeptidase that detaches proline or hydroxyproline from the carboxyl terminal position of dipeptides. Prolidase has important biological effects, and to date, its role in the etiology of PTSD has not been studied. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate prolidase activity in patients with PTSD. MethodsaaThe study group consisted of patients who were diagnosed with PTSD after the earthquake that occurred in the province of Van in Turkey in 2011 (n=25); the first control group consisted of patients who experienced the earthquake but did not show PTSD symptoms (n=26) and the second control group consisted of patients who have never been exposed to a traumatic event (n=25). Prolidase activities in the patients and the control groups were determined by the ELISA method using commercial kits. ResultsaaProlidase activity in the patient group was significantly lower when compared to the control groups. Prolidase activity was also significantly lower in the traumatized healthy subjects compared to the other healthy group (p<0.01). ConclusionaaThe findings of the present study suggest that the decrease in prolidase activity may have neuroprotective effects in patients with PTSD.

      • An artificial intelligence-based design model for circular CFST stub columns under axial load

Süleyman İpek,Ayşegül Erdoğa,Esra Mete Güneyisi 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.44 No.1

This paper aims to use the artificial intelligence approach to develop a new model for predicting the ultimate axial strength of the circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) stub columns. For this, the results of 314 experimentally tested circular CFST stub columns were employed in the generation of the design model. Since the influence of the column diameter, steel tube thickness, concrete compressive strength, steel tube yield strength, and column length on the ultimate axial strengths of columns were investigated in these experimental studies, here, in the development of the design model, these variables were taken into account as input parameters. The model was developed using the backpropagation algorithm named Bayesian Regularization. The accuracy, reliability, and consistency of the developed model were evaluated statistically, and also the design formulae given in the codes (EC4, ACI, AS, AIJ, and AISC) and the previous empirical formulations proposed by other researchers were used for the validation and comparison purposes. Based on this evaluation, it can be expressed that the developed design model has a strong and reliable prediction performance with a considerably high coefficient of determination (R-squared) value of 0.9994 and a low average percent error of 4.61. Besides, the sensitivity of the developed model was also monitored in terms of dimensional properties of columns and mechanical characteristics of materials. As a consequence, it can be stated that for the design of the ultimate axial capacity of the circular CFST stub columns, a novel artificial intelligence-based design model with a good and robust prediction performance was proposed herein.

      • Nonlinear analysis of concrete-filled single and double skin steel tubular tapered columns under axial loading

Süleyman İpek,Esra Mete Güneyisi 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.27 No.4

In this study, the structural response of concrete-filled single and double skin steel tubular (CFST and CFDST) composite tapered columns was investigated through the finite element method (FEM). In the development of the FEM model, the concentric axial loading condition and circular section were adopted. Experimental results available in the literature were used to verify the proposed FEM model. In addition, a parametric study was performed to visualize the effectiveness of tapered angle and material strengths on the ultimate capacity of CFST and CFDST tapered columns. To this aim, a total of 60 tapered column samples (including 30 CFST and 30 CFDST columns) were modeled by taking into consideration five tapered angles, two steel tube yield strengths, and three concrete cube compressive strengths. The verification of the FEM model revealed that the developed model has a reliable and trustable assessment capability. It was noticed that the tapered angle was the most crucial parameter, influencing significantly the ultimate axial strength and stiffness of both CFST and CFDST composite tapered columns. As well, it was overtly beheld from the study that CFST composite tapered column specimens had better ultimate axial strength values than CFDST composite tapered column specimens with the same sectional and material properties.

The Relationship between the Number of Manic Episodes and Oxidative Stress Indicators in Bipolar Disorder

        Sü,leyman Akarsu,Abdullah Bolu,Emre Aydemir,Selma Bozkurt Zincir,Yasemin Gü,lcan Kurt,Serkan Zincir,Murat Erdem,Ö,zcan Uzun 대한신경정신의학회 2018 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.15 No.5

Objective Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes that has a lifetime prevalence of 0.4– 5.5%. The neurochemical mechanism of BD is not fully understood. Oxidative stress in neurons causes lipid peroxidation in proteins associated with neuronal membranes and intracellular enzymes and it may lead to dysfunction in neurotransmitter reuptake and enzyme activities. These pathological processes are thought to occur in brain regions associated with affective functions and emotions in BD. The relationship between the number of manic episodes and total oxidant-antioxidant capacity was investigated in this study. Methods Eighty-two BD patients hospitalized due to manic symptoms and with no episodes of depression were enrolled in the study. Thirty of the 82 patients had had their first episode of mania, and the other 52 patients had had two or more manic episodes. The control group included 45 socio-demographically matched healthy individuals. Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant capacity (TOC) measurements of the participants were performed. The oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated by TOC/TAC. Results There were no significant differences in OSI scores between BD patients with first-episode mania and BD patients with more than one manic episode. However, OSI scores in both groups were significantly higher than in the control group. TOC levels of BD patients with first-episode mania were found to be significantly higher than TOC levels of BD patients with more than one manic episode and healthy controls. There were no significant differences in TAC levels between BD patients with first-episode mania and BD patients with more than one manic episode. TAC levels in both groups were significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion Significant changes in oxidative stress indicators were observed in this study, confirming previous studies. Increased levels of oxidants were shown with increased disease severity rather than with the number of manic episodes. Systematic studies, including of each period of the disorder, are needed for using the findings indicating deterioration of oxidative parameters.

Microdissected Prefabricated Flap: An Evolution in Flap Prefabrication

Süleyman Taş 대한성형외과학회 2016 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.43 No.6

When traditional flap techniques are not feasible, we apply flap prefabrication, which is more complicated and sophisticated but supplies large and thin flaps. There are some disadvantages to the technique that require improvement, such as venous congestion after flap transfer, which requires months for neoangiogenesis and necessitates a vascular carrier. Here, the author presents a new technique, called as ‘microdissected prefabricated flap,’ to successfully produce a safe, large, and thin flap. This technique is based on the microdissection of the perforators to the greatest extent possible, spreading them out into the subdermal level and using them as a carrier. The details and the application of this technique are presented and reported.
