      • Korean Clubs in the United Arab Emirates: Promoting Intercultural Competence of Female Emiratis

Robyn Albers,Hessa Rashed AlNuaimi 한국경영커뮤니케이션학회 2020 Business Communication Research and Practice Vol.3 No.1

Objectives:The significant impact that Hallyu (the “Korean Wave”) has recently been having on young female Emiratis can be seen in the recent trend of female Emirati university students joining Korean clubs to learn more about the culture. The women are first attracted to the culture by Korean pop music (K-pop) and Korean dramas (K-dramas) and then become more interested in learning about Korean culture and language. The purpose of this study is to show how a university Korean club and the Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) provide the experiential perspectives necessary to gain intercultural competence and an appreciation for Korean culture. Methods:We surveyed 23 female Korean Club members in the UAE to understand why they are interested in Korean culture and analyzed the winning speech of the 2019 Korean speech contest to see if students had gained intercultural communication competence and an appreciation for Korean culture. Results:We found that Emirati females are initially drawn to Korean culture by Hallyu, specifically by Korean pop music and dramas. The students then become interested in learning the Korean language and other opportunities to learn more about Korea. Involvement in university Korean clubs helps students immerse themselves in Korean culture and language while living in the UAE. Conclusion:The strong interest in Korea coupled with Korean cultural experiences within the UAE is creating culturally competent students who are ready to join the workforce. Arab students capable of speaking Arabic, English, and Korean fluently with an understanding of Korean culture will benefit the on-going bilateral relations between the UAE and Korea.

      • The Triple Knot of Long-Term Care in the United States: Long-Term Care Financing, Delivery and Workforce Policy

Robyn Stone 세계섬학회 2016 World Environment and Island Studies Vol.6 No.2

The U.S. is currently in the midst of a serious debate about the future of immigration policy in the U.S. Any change has the potential to profoundly shape the circumstances of direct care workers and the demand for Long-Term Care LTC. Yet prior immigration reform debates and proposals have not considered workforce planning needs or contemplated immigration as a primary tool for managing labor markets. Historically, the U.S. has elected not to import lesser skilled workers for the purpose of employment because these workers compete directly with other vulnerable low-wage workers. Prediction of strong job growth in this sector, however, suggests a clear need to consider options that may include an immigration visa pathway to admission. Policies that limit the entry of low skilled workers may diminish the future labor pool of direct care workers in LTC. Options under exploration include 1) increasing pathways to legal status for undocumented immigrants; 2) increasing pathways for legal temporary workers with the option to offer extensions of stay or transitions to permanency; 3) pursuing an aggressive immigration strategy to permit an influx of low-wage workers to fill vacancies for direct care jobs; and 4) creating a new visa program for less-skilled, non-seasonal, non-agricultural workers. This latter option was proposed in Congress in 2013, but movement on any reforms has stalled.

NETWORK PERFORMANCE: A COMPLEX INTERPLAY OF FORM AND ACTION

ROBYN KEAST,MYRNA P. MANDELL 한국행정학회 2013 International Review of Public Administration Vol.18 No.2

Networks form a key part of the institutional infrastructure of contemporary society and are likely to continue in this role for some time. Drawing on a set of cross-jurisdictional network case studies (Australia and the United States), this paper examines the influence of the type of network formed and the impact of network actors on the operational dynamics and performance of the network. The paper argues that the interplay of these factors will determine the degree to which a network will or will not be successful. The findings extend current network typologies by specifying a network identification level and highlight the intermediary role of agency in network performance. The paper concludes with the view that there is a continued need for holistic research approaches that uncover the often hidden interconnections between components and highlight the emergent phenomena that can arise from these intersections.

Manual Handling in Aged Care: Impact of Environment-related Interventions on Mobility

Robyn L.Coman,Carlo Caponecchia,Andrew S. McIntosh 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2018 Safety and health at work Vol.9 No.4

The manual handling of people (MHP) is known to be associated with high incidence of musculoskeletal disorders for aged care staff. Environment-related MHP interventions, such as appropriate seated heights to aid sit-to-stand transfers, can reduce staff injury while improving the patient's mobility. Promoting patient mobility within the manual handling interaction is an endorsed MHP risk control intervention strategy. This article provides a narrative review of the types of MHP environmental controls that can improve mobility, as well as the extent to which these environmental controls are considered in MHP risk management and assessment tools. Although a range of possible environmental interventions exist, current tools only consider these in a limited manner. Development of an assessment tool that more comprehensively covers environmental strategies in MHP risk management could help reduce staff injury and improve resident mobility through auditing existing practices and guiding the design of new and refurbished aged care facilities.

Potential of the Microbiome as a Biomarker for Early Diagnosis and Prognosis of Breast Cancer

        Robyn Jarman,Sarah Ribeiro-Milograna,Wouter Kalle 한국유방암학회 2020 Journal of breast cancer Vol.23 No.6

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women globally, and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in female patients. The majority of breast cancer cases are of unknown cause; few are linked to genetic predisposition, and some arise sporadically. Finding the cause of these sporadic cases is an important area in cancer research. Investigations into the microbiome show links between microbiome dysbiosis and breast cancer, with possible mechanisms in the association of the microbiome and breast cancer, including estrogen metabolism and the ‘oestrobolome,’ immune regulation, propensity for obesity, and the regulation of the tumor microenvironment. This paper reviews the literature and discusses the potential implications of links between the microbiome and breast cancer, and concludes that the microbiome may have significant applications as a biomarker for breast cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and management. Further investigation is crucial, since modification of the microbiome can, at the most basic level, be achieved via dietary modification.

      • Adolescent Perceptions of Social Media in a Pacific Rim Community

        Robyn M Holmes,Sharon Liden,Lisa Shin 한국아동학회 2013 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.3 No.2

This study explored social media use among 50 adolescents attending a public high school in a non-Western community. Adolescents participated in focus group interviews and completed a written self-report survey. Findings revealed that these teenagers use electronic communication forms such as phone texting and social networking sites to connect with friends and family. They show a preference for Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, do not engage in risky Internet behavior, and acknowledge both positive and negative aspects of electronic communication forms. In addition, their selection of electronic communication forms is dependent upon several factors that include the strength of the relationship and type of discourse exchange. For example, they reserve phone texting and cell use, which are more private communication mediums for family and friends. Electronic communication did not replace face-to-face interactions; rather it complemented and extended those interactions. Findings support existing literature on adolescent social media use and those shared with other collectivist cultural groups.

Building an International Nursing Outcomes Research Agenda

        Robyn B. Cheung,Linda H. Aiken 한국간호과학회 2008 Asian Nursing Research Vol.2 No.2

A program of research begins with a good idea that materializes into a series of studies that carry the same theme. Each study builds upon the last, expanding on the findings to generate new questions, thus building the evidence base. The Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research has built a 20-year program of research that has made great strides in establishing the evidence base that professional nurse practice models of care positively influence patient outcomes. This paper traces the evolution of the Center’s program of research from a one-state focus to an international enterprise.
