Boundary and Sense of Place in Traditional Korean Dwelling
Rieh Sun-young 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2003 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.3 No.2
A place cannot exist without some kind of boundary and man’s essential relationship to places consists in dwellings, the basic property of human existence. Loss of the sense of place in our dwelling resulted from the negation of the meaning of boundary in our traditional dwelling. Traditional Korean residences have a strong sense of place with their layering of the boundaries. Investigation of the dialectical expansion of the boundary in Korean dwelling space will propose another approach for the discourse of connection between contemporary architecture and cultural tradition in Korea.
Credibility Assessment of Online Information in Context
Rieh, Soo Young Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2014 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.2 No.3
The purpose of this study is to examine to what extent the context in which people interact with online information affects people's credibility perceptions. In this study, credibility assessment is defined as perceptions of credibility relying on individuals' expertise and knowledge. Context has been characterized with respect to three aspects: Context as user goals and intentions, context as topicality of information, and context as information activities. The data were collected from two empirical studies. Study 1 was a diary study in which 333 residents in Michigan, U.S.A. submitted 2,471 diary entries to report their trust perceptions associated with ten different user goals and nine different intentions. Study 2 was a lab-based study in which 64 subjects participated in performing four search tasks in two different information activity conditions - information search or content creation. There are three major findings of this study: (1) Score-based trust perceptions provided limited views of people's credibility perceptions because respondents tended to score trust ratings consistently high across various user goals and intentions; (2) The topicality of information mattered more when study subjects assessed the credibility of user generated content (UGC) than with traditional media content (TMC); (3) Subjects of this study exerted more effort into making credibility judgments when they engaged in searching activities than in content creation. These findings indicate that credibility assessment can or should be seen as a process-oriented notion incorporating various information use contexts beyond simple rating-based evaluation. The theoretical contributions for information scientists and practical implications for web designers are also discussed.

The article deals with the reality subject of animations. Animations are created on the basis of fantasy. Disney’s introduction of the narratives and styles of live action film into the field of animation, which laid a foundation for the hyper-reality animation, has produced an unintended consequence of marginalizing other animation genres which have emphasized fantasy through free experimentations of various images. A combination of Disney’s worldview of hyper-reality with later-developed 3D computer animation technology has made fantastic figures and spaces much more real than the real ones, and succeeded in creating a matrix of simulacre, a world of mere copies without the original.

Due to the lack of available site in urban setting outdoor space in elementary schools are getting smaller and tend to be replaced by indoor spaces. Focusing on courtyard, piloti space and roof space, this study analyzed the current condition and usage of the outdoor spaces in the urban mini-schools based on the analysis of architectural drawing, interview, survey, and observation. Following issues are found for appropriate planning for outdoor spaces in the urban mini-schools. Firstly, roof space needs to be coordinated with the physical education and outdoor class curriculum and should be planned separately for quiet activities. Secondly, the piloti space should be planned as an independent space rather than a connection between classroom and outdoor space, with appropriate surveillance from teacher's space for the lower graders. Thirdly, courtyard space, typical space in urban mini school surrounded by densely arranged buildings, should be thermally controlled for outdoor class or resting with appropriate screen from noise to keep quiet atmosphere.

In the context of lifelong education program for an aging society and information age, elementary school facilities are expected to accommodate various people in diverse age group and diverse physical abilities. Introduction of the 'Universal Design' concept seems inevitable in school environment in terms of public infra structure for community. However, in architectural point of view, unlike foreign examples, simply applied barrier-free and safety standards of domestic guidelines based on dimensional data does not function enough to achieve universal design in authentic manner. This study is focused on this issue and suggests the direction of improvement for architectural design guidelines. Through the comparative analysis of foreign and domestic design guidelines, two principles of universal design-'Flexibility in Use', 'Perceptile Information'- are found to be lacking in the domestic design guidelines for elementary school facilities. It is expected for government authority to develop more concrete guidelines to achieve universal design for school as a basic public space in the community.
