      • Promoting an Awareness of Sociocultural Linguistics in the EFL Classroom

Vol.2019 No.-

Understanding the inherent, interrelated relationship between language and culture has been widely recognized as an indispensable element of language learning. This is particularly relevant in light of the plethora of World Englishes currently being used around the globe (Shin H & Jang, 2018). However, few studies have examined specific means by which this awareness can be promoted in the EFL classroom. The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of 80 Korean university English majors to an EFL activity that promotes an understanding of sociocultural linguistics. By examining sets of English and Korean sentences and comparing students’ translations of Korean and English sentences, the participants were asked to share their perceptions of sociocultural concepts embedded within the two languages. The participants identified ten such concepts. In addition, the high majority stated the activity had promoted their understanding of the relationship between culture and language. The results of this study have a number of significant implications for educators and learners.

Incorporating World Englishes into the Korean EFL Classroom

Vol.0 No.73

As the number of English speakers included in Kachru`s (1985) so-called Outer and Expanding Circles of English continues to increase worldwide, the study of a variety of issues related to World Englishes has intensified. This study is aimed at identifying the perceptions of 60 university students in an EFL environment in Korea about their personal abilities to distinguish between different forms of English, the importance of learning various non-native versus native forms of World Englishes, and the incorporation of activities into the EFL classroom that introduce a variety of World Englishes. Following the completion of a brief verbal guise test in which students were asked to identify the nationalities of a number of native and non-native English speakers, the participants completed an open-ended questionnaire and took part in focus group discussions. The findings of this study revealed that the high majority of students reported having more difficulty comprehending English from Outer and Expanding Circle Countries than from Inner Circle Countries and that, although most participants recognized the importance of understanding a variety of non-native Englishes and were supportive of the incorporation of World Englishes into the EFL classroom, the majority felt it was more important to learn native than non-native forms of English. In addition, the participants identified a number of factors that influenced their perceptions.

      • Ligularia fischeri and its constituent 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid improve obesity-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by regulating lipid metabolism and activating AMPK

        Randy, A.,Kim, M.,Nho, C.W. Elsevier 2016 Journal of Functional Foods Vol.27 No.-

This study revealed the activity of a Ligularia fischeri extract (LFE) and its constituents to protect against obesity-induced NAFLD using in vitro and in vivo models. In HepG2 cells, LFE and its chemical constituent 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid inhibited lipid accumulation by altering lipid metabolism towards fatty acid oxidation through activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. In high-fat diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice, oral administration of LFE attenuated the progression of obesity and improved signs of insulin resistance. LFE treatment attenuated development of NAFLD by decreasing fat droplet accumulation and the triacylglycerol content. In vivo activity of LFE was displayed through regulation of hepatic lipid metabolism and activation of hepatic AMPK. Furthermore, LFE was protected against NAFLD by lowering the level of lipid peroxidation through activation of the antioxidant defence system via NRF2 activation. These results indicate that LFE is a potent agent to improve NAFLD.

Teaching English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) in Korea: Investigating Factors Affecting University Students’ Perceptions of and Attitudes toward EIcL

Vol.63 No.-

English as an intercultural language (EIcL) has been theoretically discussed in the applied linguistics profession. EIcL aims to create ‘multidialectical English speakers/listeners with intercultural insight and knowledge.Although theoretical discussions on EIcL are relatively at its inceptive stage, the present study examines factors affecting Korean university students’ perceptions of and attitudes toward EIcL and some in-depth ideological underpinnings underneath these factors. 60 students participated in the survey. Data include questionnaires and interviews. The findings indicate that most of the influencing factors for those supportive of inner circle Englishes were functional and stemmed from external forces. On the other hand, the majority of factors that influenced those supportive of EIcL was primarily internal and related to the students’ desire to take part in meaningful intercultural experiences. Pedagogical implications and suggestions are also discussed.

Are we teaching health science students in the United States what they need to know about death and dying coping strategies?

Vol.18 No.-

Purpose: This investigation aimed to answer the following questions: are health science students provided with death and dying education before attending clinical rotations, and if so, do the students receiving this type of education perceive it as effective? Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional survey, 96 Midwestern State University health science students were surveyed to determine the percentage of students who had received death and dying education before clinical rotations, as well as the students’ perception of educational effectiveness for those who had received end-of-life training. A self-report questionnaire presented nursing, radiologic sciences, and respiratory care students with a series of questions pertaining to the education they had received concerning the deathand dying process of patients. Results: Of the 93 students who had already started their clinical rotations, 55 stated they had not received death and dying education before starting clinical courses. Of the 38 who had received death and dying education, only 17 students believed the training waseffective. Conclusion: It is imperative that health science educational programs implement death and dying education and training into the curriculum, and that criteria for evaluating effectiveness be an essential part of death and dying education and training in order to ensure effectiveness.

Economics of Otherness in Pearl: Fluidity and Identity

Vol.63 No.1

In the fourteenth-century Middle English poem Pearl, the narrator`s effort to ponder the singular nature of heavenly bliss is systematically undermined by economies of difference. While the object of the grieving narrator`s reflection has perennially inspired debate, all analysts recognize that the poem`s structuring relationship is presented in terms of economic competition: a jeweler-narrator judges the pearl as dearer than any other gem set for sale or gift to another. In the dream proper, the Pearl-poet channels spiritual debates grounded in the contrast between the dynamic multiplicity and fluidity of earthly economics with the static singularity of heavenly sublimity. The Pearl-poet deploys the Pearl-maiden as a spiritual authority who highlights the differentially distracted poet`s inability to hold fast to notions of oneness. The Pearl-poet generates a dream topography that mirrors the narrator`s limited perception: the jeweler imperfectly imagines the stable, because immaterial heaven upon which his economically destabilized eyes cannot focus. The multiple rivers of the poem elucidate how explicit efforts to focus on a single lost Pearl are undermined by the ways multiplicity haunts the desiring dreamer`s vision. The poet undermines the earth-heaven binary by toggling between a central river and multiple potential rivers, and thereby reflects on both the artistic nature of dreaming and the specificity of anxious Christian subjectivity. Such rivers are the internal dividing lines that reveal potential others for a dissociative, because earthly, mind that only imagines individuals within a fluid world of others.

Communist.gov: E-propaganda and Chinese political culture in the 16th Party Congress

Vol.8 No.-

      • Incorporating Dynamic Pedagogy into the Korean EFL Classroom

Vol.2019 No.-

The purpose of this presentation is to describe a pedagogical approach that has arisen in response to the pervasive influence that World Englishes currently has on EFL education: Dynamic Pedagogy (DP) (Mahboob & Dutcher, 2013). Based on the Dynamic Approach to Language Proficiency (DALP), DP strives to expose language learners to a diversity of contexts rather than focusing on adherence to one form of the language. Specifically, this presentation will examine the basic concepts of DP and report on a classroom activity that attempts to incorporate several of its basic tenets for Korean university EFL students. In addition, the presenter will discuss the results of a pilot study that was conducted using this activity. The perceptions of the students who participated in this pilot study and a number of pedagogical implications are discussed.
