        Leaching characteristics and kinetics of the metal impurities present in rice husk during pretreatment for the production of nanosilica particles

        Fundamental studies on the removal of metal impurities are essential for the production of nanosilica by combustion. This study reports the leaching characteristics, leaching kinetics and occurrence form of the metal impurities present in rice husk based on acid pretreatment. Acid pretreatment removes most of the metal impurities present in rice husk. In particular, 98wt% removal of potassium can be reached. The acid concentration, leaching time and reagent type have significant effects on the leaching of metal impurities, and optimal conditions exist for the acid pretreatment process. Furthermore, the leaching of metal impurities occurs through two stages, and parts of the metal impurities exist in organic-bound form, which can be leached through ion exchange. The results show that the pseudosecond- order model is suitable for describing the leaching kinetics of the metal impurities present in rice husk, and empirical formulas for predicting the metal contents leached from rice husk during acid pretreatment at ambient temperature are also obtained. Additionally, the different occurrence form and quantities of metal impurities in rice husk lead to different leaching effects, which strongly influences the chemical properties and quality of the obtained silica particles.

        日本明治期北美移民潮與「照片結婚」熱 -從「照片新娘」與女學生形象來探討-

        After Japanese-Russian war, the boom of emigration to America became popular and many Japanese immigrants came to States pursuing their success. However, the marriage issue became to be the most concerns among the Japanese immigrant society not only because the inter-racial marriage was difficult to Japanese male immigrants in contemporary but also because most male Japanese immigrants decided to get married and settle down in States. Under this situation, the picture marriage gradually turned to be the most usual marriage style to the Japanese male immigrants in the northern America around 1905 and reached its peak in 1912. However, the problems in the picture marriage were always taken as a result of “the sexual immorality” of the picture brides. For this reason, the picture bride are labeled to be “sexually degenerate.” The representation of picture brides in the contemporary overlapped with that of the contemporary “degenerate female student” implies the association between these two groups. In 1919, the picture marriage turned out to be part of issue of anti-Japanese movement. For this reason, the Japanese ambassador in U.S. Hidehara Kijuro and the Japanese immigrant association require to abolish the picture marriage that was accepted by Japanese government. However, there is subtle differences between the requests by America and the assertions by Japanese government on the issue of abolishing the picture marriages. For America, the purpose of abolishing the picture marriages is to restrict the number of labor immigrants due to the picture brides transformed to be another labors after aboard immediately. On the contrast, the picture marriage had been part of policy to encourage emigrating until that time, the abrupt abolishment of the picture marriage is to ease the anti-Japanese movement rather to deny the system of the picture marriage. The decision made by Japanese newspapers in the northern America at this time overflowed with the pros and cons on the matter of the picture marriages and the picture brides can be seen in. The purpose of this paper will shed light on the association between the picture marriage and the emigration boom to America, and the contemporary discourses on the representation of America and the picture.

      • Finger Extensor Facilitation Training Device “iPARKO”: Analysis of increased muscle activity in a hemiplegic person

        Applying an external force to a person’s hyperextended fingertip produces electrical activity of the extensor digitorum muscle even when the hand is not opened by the person. Based on this, a finger extensor facilitation technique has been developed for hemiplegic patients who cannot open the paralyzed hand by themselves. In this study, we developed a finger extensor facilitation training device named “iPARKO” that imitates this technique. We examined the factors that promote activities in the extensor digitorum muscle by conducting active training using iPARKO. Experiments were conducted on a healthy person and a hemiplegic person. It was found that active training using iPARKO leads to activities in the extensor digitorum muscle even in a hemiplegic person who cannot open their hand. In addition, it was found that a hemiplegic person can increase muscle activity by pressing their hand movement and utilizing electromyography biofeedback. The hand movement was clarified as follows: the hemiplegic person pressed the hand against the moving part of the device and pushed the fingertip further into it as a voluntary movement to increase the amount of muscle activity.

        Evaluation of Streptomyces saraciticas as Soil Amendments for Controlling Soil-Borne Plant Pathogens

        Soil-borne diseases are the major problems in mono cropping. A mixture (designated LTM-m) composed of agricultural wastes and a beneficial microorganism Streptomyces saraceticus SS31 was used as soil amendments to evaluate its efficacy for managing Rhizoctonia solani and root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). In vitro antagonistic assays revealed that SS31 spore suspensions and culture broths effectively suppressed the growth of R. solani, reduced nematode egg hatching, and increased juvenile mortality. Assays using two Petri dishes revealed that LTM-m produced volatile compounds to inhibit the growth of R. solani and cause mortality to the root knot nematode eggs and juveniles. Pot and greenhouse tests showed that application of 0.08% LTM-m could achieve a great reduction of both diseases and significantly increase plant fresh weight. Greenhouse trials revealed that application of LTM- m could change soil properties, including soil pH value, electric conductivity, and soil organic matter. Our re- sults indicate that application of LTM-m bio-organic amendments could effectively manage soil-borne pathogens.

      • Effect of Introducing EMG Biofeedback to a Finger Extensor Facilitation Training Device for Hemiplegic Patients after Strokes

        Biofeedback systems have been developing rapidly in recent years as rehabilitation methods for hemiplegic stroke patients. To investigate the value of such systems for the rehabilitation of these patients, we complemented the Useful and Ultimate Rehabilitation System PARKO (UR-System-PARKO) with a biofeedback system that had an A-BA- B design, to see if together, patients saw more improvement in a shorter timespan in the control of the extensor muscles in their hands. The biofeedback system was tested without therapist participation. We evaluated the effectiveness of each training trial by recording electromyography (EMG) signals for the extensor and flexor digitorum muscles. By comparing the EMG values from each trial, we were able to conclude that the training with the UR-System-PARKO became more effective when the biofeedback system was applied. This also demonstrated that, by using a biofeedback system, it would be possible for stroke hemiplegic patients to conduct highly efficient self-rehabilitation.

        The Effect of CdS QDs Structure on the InGaP/GaAs/Ge Triple Junction Solar Cell Efficiency

        This work describes optical and electrical characteristics of InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction (T-J) solar cells with CdS quantum dots (QDs) fabricated by a novel chemical solution. With the anti-reflective feature at long wavelength and down-conversion at UV regime, the CdS quantum dot effectively enhance the overall power conversion efficiency more than that of a traditional GaAs-based device. Experimental results indicate that CdS quantum dot can enhance the short-circuit current by 0.33 mA/cm2, which is observed for the triple-junction solar cells with CdS QDs of about 3.5 nm in diameter. Moreover, the solar cell conversion efficiency is improved from 28.3% to 29.0% under one-sun AM 1.5 global illumination I-V measurement.
