        Dielectric Properties of BaTiO3 Synthesized by Containerless Processing Technique

        Spheroids of BaTiO3 with a diameter of ca. 2 mm were synthesized by using a ressurized electrostatic levitation furnace. olycrystalline perovskite BaTiO3 showed a high of 4000 at room temperature, and an oxygen-decient hexagonal BaTiO3 exhibited an higher than 100000 with a tan of about 0.1 together with a weak temperature dependence.

        Electronic nutritional intake assessment in patients with urolithiasis: A decision impact analysis

        Purpose: To evaluate a physician's impression of a urinary stone patient's dietary intake and whether it was dependent on the medium through which the nutritional data were obtained. Furthermore, we sought to determine if using an electronic food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) impacted dietary recommendations for these patients. Materials and Methods: Seventy-six patients attended the Stone Clinic over a period of 6 weeks. Seventy-five gave consent for enrollment in our study. Patients completed an office-based interview with a fellowship-trained endourologist, and a FFQ administered on an iPad. The FFQ assessed intake of various dietary components related to stone development, such as oxalate and calcium. The urologists were blinded to the identity of patients' FFQ results. Based on the office-based interview and the FFQ results, the urologists provided separate assessments of the impact of nutrition and hydration on the patient's stone disease (nutrition impact score and hydration impact score, respectively) and treatment recommendations. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to compare pre-FFQ data to post-FFQ data. Results: Higher FFQ scores for sodium (odds ratio [OR], 1.02; p=0.02) and fluids (OR, 1.03, p=0.04) were associated with a higher nutritional impact score. None of the FFQ parameters impacted hydration impact score. A higher FFQ score for oxalate (OR, 1.07; p=0.02) was associated with the addition of at least one treatment recommendation. Conclusions: Information derived from a FFQ can yield a significant impact on a physician's assessment of stone risks and decision for management of stone disease.

      • Nanosized Nucleus-Supercooled Liquid Interfacial Free Energy and Thermophysical Properties of Early and Late Transition Liquid Metals

        <P>Crystal–liquid interfacial free energy is important to understand in crystal study, for example, nucleation, crystal growth, and vitrification. Here, we report the nanosized nucleus-supercooled liquid interfacial free energy of early and late transition liquid metals using the electrostatic levitation (ESL) technique and classical homogeneous nucleation theory (CNT). For the estimation of the interfacial free energy, we obtained thermophysical parameters of the transition liquid metals (Ti, Fe, Ni, Zr, Nb, Rh, and Hf), such as hypercooling limit (Δ<I>T</I><SUB>hyp</SUB>), specific heat (<I>C</I><SUB><I>p</I></SUB>), total hemispherical emissivity (ε<SUB>T</SUB>), and density (ρ). The estimated interfacial free energies of Ti, Ni, and Zr agreed well with a previous report having similar hypercooling limit and fusion enthalpy, while Fe, Nb, Rh, and Hf show different values from the report. This reflects the importance of accurate measurement of the two quantities. The obtained Turnbull’s coefficients (α) of the liquid metals is higher than 0.45. The interfacial free energy is discussed with configurationally different local order of the crystal and the liquid.</P><P>We report nanosized crystal nucleus-supercooled liquid interfacial free energy of liquid metals, which were obtained using a containerless technique that provides homogeneous nucleation conditions.       • Physical properties of giant molecular clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud

        <P>ABSTRACT</P><P>The Magellanic Mopra Assessment (MAGMA) is a high angular resolution <SUP>12</SUP>CO (<I>J</I>= 1 → 0) mapping survey of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud using the Mopra Telescope. Here we report on the basic physical properties of 125 GMCs in the LMC that have been surveyed to date. The observed clouds exhibit scaling relations that are similar to those determined for Galactic GMCs, although LMC clouds have narrower linewidths and lower CO luminosities than Galactic clouds of a similar size. The average mass surface density of the LMC clouds is 50 M<SUB>⊙</SUB> pc<SUP>−2</SUP>, approximately half that of GMCs in the inner Milky Way. We compare the properties of GMCs with and without signs of massive star formation, finding that non-star-forming GMCs have lower peak CO brightness than star-forming GMCs. We compare the properties of GMCs with estimates for local interstellar conditions: specifically, we investigate the H <SMALL>I</SMALL> column density, radiation field, stellar mass surface density and the external pressure. Very few cloud properties demonstrate a clear dependence on the environment; the exceptions are significant positive correlations between (i) the H <SMALL>I</SMALL> column density and the GMC velocity dispersion, (ii) the stellar mass surface density and the average peak CO brightness and (iii) the stellar mass surface density and the CO surface brightness. The molecular mass surface density of GMCs without signs of massive star formation shows no dependence on the local radiation field, which is inconsistent with the photoionization-regulated star formation theory proposed by McKee. We find some evidence that the mass surface density of the MAGMA clouds increases with the interstellar pressure, as proposed by Elmegreen, but the detailed predictions of this model are not fulfilled once estimates for the local radiation field, metallicity and GMC envelope mass are taken into account.</P>

        Power Through Participation

        본 연구는 중국이 신개발은행(New Development Bank)과 아시아 인프라 투자은행(Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank)을 공동 개발하기로 결정한 이유를 고찰한다. 특히 양자간 원조(bilateral aid)가 여전히 중국 해외개발원조의 가장 큰 부분을 차지하고 있는 시점에서 시진핑 정부가 다자간 원조를 공개적으로 수용한 이유에 주목하고자 한다. 본 연구에 따르면, 다자간 원조는 양자간 원조의 제반 문제들을 해결하고 중국의 국제적 지위에 정당성을 부여하는 데에 도움을 준다. 또한 남남 협력 (South-South cooperation) 기회를 확대하고 인프라 개발자금 공급 경로를 다양화하는 데에도 커다란 기여를 한다. 더욱 심층적인 측면에서, 본 연구는 중국이 제한적으로나마 다자간 개발원조의 새로운 규범과 제도를 정립하고 이를 통해 다른 주요 국가와의 “연성권력균형(soft balancing)”에 도달하려는 한다는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 이는 국제기구에의 적극적 참여를 통해 국제사회에서 자신의 지위를 확대 강화하려는 중국정부의 “신주권(new sovereignty)” 논리와 전적으로 부합한다. This paper examines China’s reasons for its co-creation of the New Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Particular attention is given to the issue of why China has embraced multilateral aid giving in a highly-publicized way under Xi Jinping at a time when bilateral aid still accounts for the lion’s share of China’s foreign development assistance. Findings are that bilateral aid has sometimes been accompanied by problems, multilateral aid confers legitimacy on China, multilateral institutions provide a venue for South-South cooperation and the need for multiple sources of finance for infrastructure development is great. At a deeper level, the paper suggests that China is trying to carve out new multilateral development lending norms, however limited this may be happening, wants to use the new institutions for “soft balancing” of other countries and is trying to assert itself in a way that is consistent with the “new sovereignty” which places emphasis on the use of institutions to gain “status” in the international system.

        Future of the U.S.-ROK Alliance

        한미 동맹의 미래는 어떻게 될 것인가? 양국의 요구에 계속 부응할 것인가? 중국을 견제하기 위한 미 국의 지정학적 활동에 한국의 참여와 같은 일부 이슈에 대한 관심이 약화될 것인가? 한국이 보다 독립 적인 외교정책을 개발하려고 시도할 수 있을까? 이 논문은 문재인-도널드 트럼프 시대의 무역, 국방비 분담, 북한 비핵화, 미국 종말고고도지역방어(THAAD) 시스템 및 중국의 부상 등 주요 갈등의 배경에 대한 질문들을 고려한다. 이 논문의 주요 논점은 한국의 경제 기적과 한국 민족주의의 재검토로 서울이 더 큰 정책 자율성을 개발하도록 추진하고 있지만 양국 동맹이 경제, 안보 및 역사적 이유로 매우 중요 하기 때문에 서울이 아시아의 ‘중심-위성 (hub and spoke)’ 동맹 구조에서 중요한 역할을 수행하도록 미 국에 의해 더 큰 책임이 주어지는 수정된 형태로 지속될 것으로 보인다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 북한 핵 무기 문제를 다루기에는 이러한 구조는 잘못된 것이며, 중국과 러시아를 포함한 동북 아시아 안보의 이 해 관계자들이 회원이 되는 새로운 집단안보 혹은 공유안보 거버넌스 메커니즘을 만들어야 한다고 주장 한다. What is the future of the U.S.-ROK alliance? Will it continue to serve the needs of both countries? Will diverging interests on some issues such as South Korean participation in U.S. geopolitical activities to contain China weaken it? Might South Korea attempt to develop a more independent foreign policy? This paper considers these questions against the background of major tensions during the Moon Jae-in-Donald Trump era over trade, defense cost-sharing, North Korean denuclearization, the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system and the rise of China. The main argument of the paper is that the Korean economic miracle and a reassertion of Korean nationalism are pushing Seoul to develop greater policy autonomy but that the bilateral alliance remains so important to it for economic, security, and historical reasons that it is likely to endure, albeit in a modified form in which new purposes are created and Seoul is given greater responsibilities by the United States to whom South Korea plays an important role in its Asian “hub and spoke” alliance structure. The paper also argues that that structure may be the wrong one for dealing with the North Korean nuclear weapons issue and that a new collective security or shared security governance mechanism should be created in which stakeholders in Northeast Asian security, including China and Russia, should be members.
