War Games: North Korea's Reaction to US and South Korea Military Exercises

Since 1976, the militaries of the United States and South Korea have been holding routine joint military exercises (JMEs) for the purposes of military training and deterrence against North Korea. These exercises are frequently cited as a cause of tension on the peninsula, causing North Korea to escalate its conflictual rhetoric and behavior. I empirically assess this claim using new data on US-ROK JMEs and machine-coded event data collected by the Integrated Crisis Early Warning System. The findings show that North Korea does not systematically escalate its conflictual rhetoric or behavior during or near the occurrence of JMEs. The result s hold for both low-and high-intensity exercises and for rhetoric that has the United States and South Korea as its target.
Pyrazinoquinoxaline 그룹을 함유한 공액 고분자의 합성 및 응용

본 연구에서는 두 종류의 도너-억셉터 (D-A) 타입 고분자들을 Stille coupling 반응을 통하여 중합한 뒤, 이들 을 고분자 기반 유기 태양전지의 광활성 층으로 적용하였다. Benzodithiophene 전자 주게와 pyrazinoquinoxaline 전 자 받게를 활용하여 고분자들을 합성하였고, 전자 주게와 전자 받게가 직접 연결된 고분자를 PB-TMPQ 그리고 둘 사 이에 티오펜 π-bridge가 도입된 고분자를 PB-TTMPQ라 각각 명명하였다. 기본적인 화학 구조의 검증과 더불어, 고분 자들의 광학적 및 전기화학적 특성에 대한 분석 또한 실시하였다. 최종적으로 inverted-type 구조의 소자를 이용하여 고분자들의 광전지 특성들을 분석하였으며, PB-TMPQ와 PB-TTMPQ의 전력변환 효율은 각각 1.01%로 0.83%로 관측 되었다. 따라서, π-bridge의 도입이 pyrazinoquinoxaline 기반 고분자의 광전지 특성을 큰 영향을 미친다는 것이 확인 되었으며, 이러한 결과는 향후 pyrazinoquinoxaline 기반 고분자의 구조-물성 간 상관관계 연구에 활용될 수 있을 것 이다. In this study, two donor-acceptor (D-A) type polymers are synthesized under Stille coupling condition and used for photo active layers of polymer solar cells. Benzodithiophene and pyrazinoqunoxaline moiety are selected as an electron-donating and electron-accepting monomer, respectively. Two moieties are directly linked to afford PB-TMPQ, while thiophene π-bridge is incorporated between donor and acceptor unit to produce another target polymer PB-TTMPQ. After confirming the chemical structures, the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers are investigated. In addition, the photovoltaic properties of the polymers are analyzed by fabricating inverted-type photovoltaic devices. The power conversion efficiencies of the devices based on PB-TMPQ and PB-TTMPQ are determined to be 1.01% and 0.83%. respectively This study can give useful insights into the structure-property relationships of the pyrazinoquinoxaline-based polymers for photovoltaic applications.

We describe the case of 74-year-old-male, previously treated with fronto-parietal craniotomy due to primary glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), followed by concurrent radiation therapy (RT) and temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, at 1 month after completing RT + TMZ, depicted partial response. Three months later, the patient was submitted to a further brain MRI, that resulted doubtful for therapy induced changes (i.e., pseudoprogression). The patient, who had been previously treated with prostatectomy for prostate cancer (PC), underwent a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan with 18F-choline for PC biochemical recurrence. 18F-choline whole body PET/CT resulted negative for PC relapse, while segmental brain PET, co-registered with MRI, demonstrated increased tracer uptake corresponding to tumor boundaries. In order to solve differential diagnosis between pseudoprogression and GBM recurrence, brain PET/CT with 18F-L-dihydroxy-phenil-alanine (18F-DOPA) was subsequently performed: fused axial PET/MRI images showed increased 18F-DOPA incorporation in the peri-tumoral edema, but not in tumor boundaries, consistent with the suspicion of GBM pseudoprogression, as then confirmed by clinical and radiological follow-up.
