        Influence of Lithium Ions on the Ion-coordinating Ruthenium Sensitizers for Nanocrystalline Dye-sensitized Solar Cells

        Ion-coordinating ruthenium complexes [cis-Ru(dcbpy)(L)(NCS)$_2$, where dcbpy is 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine and L is 1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecane, JK-121, or bis(2-(2-methoxy-ethoxy)ethyl) amine, JK-122] have been synthesized and characterized using $^1H$ NMR, Fourier transform IR, UV/vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The effect of $Li^+$ in the electrolyte on the photovoltaic performance was investigated. With the stepwise addition of $Li^+$ to a liquid electrolyte, the device shows significant increase in the photo-current density, but a small decrease in the open circuit voltage. The solar cell with a hole conductor, the addition of $Li^+$ resulted in a 30% improvement in efficiency. The JK-121 sensitized cells in the liquid and solid-state electrolyte give power conversion efficiencies of 6.95% and 2.59%, respectively, under the simulated sunlight.

        Design of Learning Courses of Sorting Algorithms using LAMS

        The development of communication technology and the spread of computers and internet have affected to the field of education. In this paper, we design a learningprocess with LAMS to make the new education environment which is required in an information age. We made the learning environment with LAMS which develops the learner's algorithmic thinking faculty on some sorting algorithm, especially such as selection sort, bubble sort and insertion sort algorithm. In addition, we analyse the effectiveness of the, learning environment. The designed contents were applied to elementary school student's learning and a questionnaire survey was conducted after a learning course. The research of the questionnaire shows that the learning system using LAMS' motivates a learner for learning and provides a convenient learning environment.

        계층적 신경망을 이용한 다중 크기의 다중활자체 한글문서 인식

        본 논문에서는 신경망 기법을 이용하여 다중 크기 및 다중활자체로 구성된 한글문서를 인식하였다. 전체 시스템은 3종류의 신경망-문자추출 신경망, 유형분류 신경망, 그리고 문자인식 신경망-으로 구성된다. 즉 문자결합 신경망과 문자관리 신경망으로 이루어진 문자추출 신경망을 이용하여 문자열로부터 각 문자 영상을 추출한 후, 유형 분류 신경망에서 문자 영상을 6가지의 유형으로 분류하고, 해당 유형을 처리하는 문자인식 신경망에서 실제 문자를 인식하도록 구성되었다. 또한 문자인식 신경망을 학습시키기 위하여 descending epsilon 방법을 이용한 backpropagation 알고리즘을 사용하였는데, 이 방법은 신경망을 모든 입력 영상의 모든 출력 노드에 대해 고르게 학습시키기 때문에 다중활자체의 변형을 흡수할 수 있다. 그 결과 8가지 활자체의 사용빈도수가 높은 한글 520자를 94% 이상, 그리고 다중활자체로 구성된 한글문서를 94.5% 인식함으로써 신경망이 다중 크기의 다중활자체 한글문서를 효과적으로 처리할 수 있음을 보였다. This paper describes an attempt to develop a multi-font and multi-size Hangul recognition system. The system consists of three kinds of networks: a character extraction network, a type classification network, and six character recognition networks. At first the system extracts each character image from a line image using the character extraction network which is, in turn, composed of a character splitting network and a character merging network. Then, the type classification network classifies the character image into one of the six types. Finally, the corresponding recognition network classifies it into a Hangul character. In order to train the recognition networks, the backpropagation algorithm is used with descending epsilon. The descending epsilon approach is able to absorb shape variations in various font types because it helps train neural networks tolerable. The proposed system is evaluated by two sets of data. a collection of 520 most frequently used characters in eight font types, and images of a multi-font magazine. The recognition rates are about 94% for the first experiment, and 94.5% for the second one. Judging from the recognition results, we may conclude neural network approach is quite effective in handling multi-font and multi-size Hangul documents.

      • A case of pulmonary cryptococcosis mimicking pulmonary tuberculosis in a healthy young man

        Cryptococcosis is a common opportunistic infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and other causes of reduced immunity. Majority of pulmonary cryptococcosis patients exhibiting non specific clinical manifestations. So diagnosis of pulmonary cryptococcosis in patients without underlying diseases is generally difficult. Especially in an area with a high prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis and when it shows cavitary lesion, pulmonary cryptococcosis is likely to be misdiagnosed as a pulmonary tuberculosis. We present here a case of pulmonary cryptococcosis that mimicked pulmonary tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient. A 29 -year- old man presented with a 4 -day history of productive cough, low grade fever and left pleuritic chest pain. The serum anti-HIV antibody was negative. A chest X-ray showed patchy infiltration on the left upper lung field. Computed tomography (CT) showed segmental consolidation in the anterior segment of the left upper. The examination of the sputum for acid-fast bacilli with gram staining and culture did not reveal any organisms. Four days later the patient respiratory symptoms was aggravated. A follow-up chest CT demonstrated progression of the segmental consolidation with cavitation and necrosis. We conducted bronchoalveolar lavage and fluid culture was negative and there were neither acid-fast bacilli nor any pathogens. To get a tissue specimen, we conducted ultrasonography guided percutaneous needle aspiration. The specimen exhibited multiple areas of granulomatous inflammation and round, yeast-like bodies. Mucicarmine stain for the capsular material was incompletely positive and the Fontana-Masson silver stain was negative. The tissue fungal culture did not grow Cryptococcus. The result of the serum cryptococcal antigen test was positive, with a titer of 1:256. The result of the histology and the high titer of SCA strongly suggested pulmonary cryptoccosis, so we conducted polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the tissue and the PCR from the tissue specimen was positive for cryptoccosis. Treatment with 400 mg/d of oral fluconazole for 9-month course was initiated. At the end of treatment, pulmonary lesions were improved on the follow-up CT.

        DNA - based Prenatal Diagnosis of Epidermolytic Palmoplantar Keratoderma in Two Pregnancies at Risk in One large Pedigree

        Background: Epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (EPPK) is an autosomal dominant disease of cornification which presents as severe thickening of the palms and soles with prominent epidermolytic hyperkeratosis pathologically. Recent studies have shown that EPPK is caused by mutations in the keratin 9 (K9) gene which is expressed essentially only in the palms and sales. Previously, We have reported that patients in one large pedigree of EPPK have an R162W substitution in the K9 protein. In this pedigree, two women whose husbands are both EPPK patients had become pregnant. Objective: Since both women were concerned about this genetic disorder, we have performed prenatal diagnosis by biopsy analysis of chorionic villi tissue. Methods: Chorionic villi biopsies were performed at 12 weeks gestation. Since the skin lesions are strictly confined to the palms and soles of the babies, the prenatal diagnosis of EPPK by ultrastructural analysis of fetal skin biopsy or amniotic fluid cells is highly problematic. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of specific allele (PASA) assay and direct DNA sequencing analyses were performed whether the fetuses carried mutant allele of K9 gene. Results: PASA assay and dirt DNA sequencing analyses showed that one fetus was normal, but the other fetus carried the abnormal allele. Subsequently, the mother of the unaffected fetus delivered a normal child, but the mother of the affected fetus terminated the pregnancy. Conclusion: We describe the analysis of the K9 mutation in the two fetuses at risk for EPPK. We believe that this is the first report of prenatal diagnosis for EPPK. But, we have to think about the ethical problems before we decide to perform the prenatal diagnosis of any kind of skin diseases.

        학교체육이 학생들의 지능과 학업성취도에 미치는 영향: 메타 분석

        신체활동과 인지발달과의 관계에 대한 논의는 체육교육과 정신의학 분야의 연구자들에 의해 지속적으로 이루어져왔다. 하지만 학교체육을 통한 신체활동과 학생들의 지능, 그리고 학업성취도간의 상관관계에 대한 연구는 활발히 진행되지 못했다. 특히 그 필요성이 충분히 제기 되었음에도 불구하고, 학교체육과 정신의학 분야의 학제 간 연구는 그 사례를 찾아보기 어렵다. 이에 본 연구에서는 체육교사교육과 정신의학 분야의 연구자가 그간 발간되어 온 관련 연구들의 결과를 수집하여 학교체육이 학생들의 지능과 학업성취도에 어느 정도의 영향을 미쳐왔는지를 종합적으로 분석하였다. 자료 수집은 국내·외 학술논문 데이터베이스(DB)들을 통해 이루어졌으며, 한국, 미국, 캐나다, 그리고 호주에서 발행된 학술지 논문들과 미간행 학위논문들이 자료분석의 대상이 되었다. 검색된 472편의 관련 논문들 중 20편의 논문들이 본 연구의 자료 분석을 위한 기준에 의해 선별되었다. 자료 분석은 Effect Size(ES) 산출을 통한 메타분석으로 이루어졌으며, 자료 분석 결과 그 정도가 통계적으로 유의하지 않았지만, 학교체육은 학생들의 지능 발달과 학업성취도 향상에 긍정적인 역할을 했다는 종합적 결론에 도달했다. 메타분석을 통한 선행연구 결과의 재해석은 체육교육과 정신의학적 견지에서 이루어졌으며, 본 연구의 결과는 체육과 교육과정의 개정, 학교체육정책의 수정 및 보완, 그리고 학제간 연구의 설계에 있어 이론적 근거로서 그 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다. Physical educators and neuropsychiatrists share common knowledge that physical activity influences on changes in students` cognitive performance and academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the findings of research that has focused on the impacts of school-based physical education on students` intelligence and academic achievement. Initially, 472 studies were collected; these research studies were conducted in South Korea, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Then, 20 studies were selected for the meta analysis because of their inclusion of information required for the present investigation. Effect Size(ES) was calculated by the means and standard deviations of age levels of the participants and of the countries where the research studies were conducted. The findings of the present study suggest that school physical education has had a positive impact on students` intelligence and academic achievement; however, the significance of the impact was small. The researchers of this study interpreted the results of the meta analysis through the lenses of both physical education and neuroscience. In addition, the study discusses appropriate approaches to the design of physical education curricula, the supplementation of physical education policies, and the design of interdisciplinary research between the fields of physical education and neuroscience.
