Relationships between Milk Yield, Post-Partum Body Weight and Reproductive Performance in Friesian × Bunaji Cattle

        Oni, O.O.,Adeyinka, I.A.,Afolayan, R.A.,Nwagu, B.I.,Malau-Aduli, A.E.O.,Alawa, C.B.I.,Lamidi, O.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.11

The data consisted of 369 lactation records for calvings over a sixteen-year period (1972-1987) and included only cows that had normal milk records. The data were analysed using a linear model containing the fixed effects of parity, year of calving and season of calving. The least squares means${\pm}$S.E. were $1,273{\pm}58.4kg$ for milk yield, and for post-partum body weight (kg) at 2, 3 and 4 months after calving were $343.40{\pm}3.96$, $346.10{\pm}4.10$ and $352.54{\pm}4.26$, respectively. With the exception of season of calving, the effects of parity and year of calving were significant (p<0.01) on the performance of the animals. Thus, the mean-milk yields 1162, 1351 and 1350, were similar for pre-, peak- and post rainy seasons, respectively. On the other hand, as parity increased from 1 to 3, milk yield also increased, but thereafter, there was a gradual decline in milk yield. Similarly, post-partum body weight also increased with parity. However, no consistent pattern for year effect was observed which probably was a reflection of the variation in climatic conditions, or forage quality and/or availability. The phenotypic correlations between milk yield and post-partum body weights were negative and small (ranging from -0.01 to -0.08). However, high milk production in cows was associated with longer calving interval. The implications from the phenotypic correlations are suggestive of one or two possibilities. Firstly, selection for increased body weight may actually result in decreased milk yield. Also, a substantial genetic antagonism may exist between milk yield and fertility in the crossbred cows. Therefore, it is important that selection to improve milk production should take into consideration the reproductive performance of the cows.

      • An Assessment of the Usage of the Lagos Mass Transit Trains

        Oni, S. I,Okanlawon, K. R. 한국철도학회 2012 International Journal of Railway Vol.5 No.1

The rail sector, despite its potential for curtailing the present chaotic transport situation in Lagos, remains inefficient and underutilized. In spite of past initiatives and the current attempt by the Lagos State Government to provide a mass transit rail service in Lagos, the share of rail mode in the transport sector has not been encouraging and the railway plays an insignificant role in urban mass transit in Lagos at present. This paper sets out to assess the usage of the Lagos mass transit trains. Hence, the paper determines the passenger traffic flow along the rail route in Lagos and the number of passengers carried between 2000 and 2009 by the Lagos Mass Transit Trains (LMTT) with a view to assessing the usage of the present LMTT. This paper also discusses the historical development of Nigerian railway and describes rail transport in Lagos. Data were obtained through secondary sources coupled with review of literature. The result of this study shows that for a period of 10 years (2000-2009), Lagos mass transit trains carried a total of 9,870,101 passengers, which gives an average of 987,010 passengers annually. This suggests that the service of the Lagos mass transit train is grossly underutilized. However, LMTT contributes enormously to NRC by carrying 68.5% of the total passenger traffic of NRC between 2000 and 2009. In terms of passenger traffic flow along the route of LMTT, for a period of 1 year, Agbado station recorded the largest number of passengers (393,811), followed by Ijoko (163,652) and Iddo (120,787), while Iganmu station has the lowest number of rail commuters (16,919). This study also discloses that the major commodities hauled by Lagos district of NRC from Lagos to the northern parts of the country in 2007 are Cars, Cement, Billet and Wheat.

In Vitro Antimicrobial Properties of Coconut Oil on Candida Species in Ibadan, Nigeria

        A.A. Oni,D.O. Ogbolu,O.A. Daini,A.P. Oloko 한국식품영양과학회 2007 Journal of medicinal food Vol.10 No.2

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance, coupled with the availability of fewer antifungal agents with fungi-cidal actions, prompted this present study to characterize Candida species in our environment and determine the effectivenessof virgin coconut oil as an antifungal agent on these species. In 2004, 52 recent isolates of Candida species were obtainedfrom clinical specimens sent to the Medical Microbiology Laboratory, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Theirsusceptibilities to virgin coconut oil and fluconazole were studied by using the agar-well diffusion technique. Candida albi-canswas the most common isolate from clinical specimens (17); others were Candida glabrata(nine), Candida tropicalis(seven), Candida parapsilosis(seven), Candida stellatoidea(six), and Candida krusei(six). C. albicanshad the highest sus-ceptibility to coconut oil (100%), with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 25% (1:4 dilution), while fluconazolehad 100% susceptibility at an MIC of 64 .g/mL (1:2 dilution). C. kruseishowed the highest resistance to coconut oil withan MIC of 100% (undiluted), while fluconazole had an MIC of . 128 .g/mL. It is noteworthy that coconut oil was activeagainst species of Candida at 100% concentration compared to fluconazole. Coconut oil should be used in the treatment offungal infections in view of emerging drug-resistant Candida species.

Implications of abnormal abdominal wall computed tomographic angiography findings on postmastectomy free flap breast reconstruction

Ngaage, Ledibabari Mildred,Hamed, Raed R.,Oni, Georgette,Ghorra, Dina T.,Ang, Jolenda Z.,Koo, Brendan C.,Benyon, Sarah L.,Irwin, Michael S.,Malata, Charles M. Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2020 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.47 No.2

Background Preoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the abdominal wall vessels is used when planning free flap breast reconstruction (FFBR) because it provides a surgical road map which facilitates flap harvest. However, there are few reports on the effect of abnormal findings on the operative plan. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of all FFBRs performed at a tertiary referral center over a 6-year period (November 2011 to June 2017). One consultant radiologist reported on the findings. Details on patient demographics, CTA reports, and intraoperative details were collected. Results Two hundred patients received preoperative CTAs. Fourteen percent of patients (n=28) had abnormal findings. Of these findings, 18% were vascular anomalies; 36% tumorrelated and 46% were "miscellaneous." In four patients, findings subsequently prevented surgery; they comprised a mesenteric artery aneurysm, absent deep inferior epigastric (DIE) vessels, bilateral occluded DIE arteries, and significant bone metastases. Another patient had no suitable vessels for a free flap and the surgical plan converted to a pedicled transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap. The remaining incidental findings had no impact on the surgical plan or appropriateness of FFBR. More than one in 10 of those with abnormal findings went on to have further imaging before their operation. Conclusions CTA in FFBR can have a wider impact than facilitating surgical planning and reducing operative times. Incidental findings can influence the surgical plan, and in some instances, avoid doomed-to-fail and unsafe surgery. It is therefore important that these scans are reported by an experienced radiologist.

Kinetic study of activation and deactivation of adsorbed cellulase during enzymatic conversion of alkaline peroxide oxidation-pretreated corn cob to sugar

        Augustine Omoniyi Ayeni,Oluranti Agboola,Michael Olawale Daramola,Bianca Grabner,Babalola Aisosa Oni,Damilola Elizabeth Babatunde,Joseph Evwodere 한국화학공학회 2021 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.38 No.1

Corn cob lignocellulosic biomass is one of the useful precursors for the alternative production of fuels and chemicals. Understanding the kinetics of enzymatic conversion of corn cob through kinetic models could provide indepth knowledge and increase the predictive ability for process design and optimization. In this study, models based on the semi-mechanistic rate equations, first-order decay exponential function of time for adsorbed enzymes, structural and diffusion coefficient for adsorption were used to estimate kinetic parameters for the enzymatic conversion of alkaline peroxide oxidation (APO) pretreated corn cob to sugar. Fitting a first-order inactivation model of adsorbed cellulases to account for experimental hydrolysis data, the apparent hydrolysis rate constant (k2=29.51 min1), the inactivation rate constant (k3=0.269min1), and reactivation rate constant (k4=0.0048min1) were estimated. Regressed values of apparent maximum rate, Vmax, app, for adsorbed enzymes reduced appreciably with time to more than 98% at 96 h. The diffusion limit model showed that the diffusion resistance increased with increasing enzyme concentrations.
