        Effects of Growing Population and Demand for Health Care Services in the Federal Capital City, Abuja

        Ascertaining the actual growth rate of the population is an issue that has generated a lot of arguments amongst various scholars in the process of determining the actual census count. As such, this has had a pronounced effect in the determination of the actual growth rates for different urban populations in the country. But the effect centres much when it comes to accurately determining the major components or the factors contributing to the rapid growth of urban populations. The problem of rapid population growth centres much on its effects on the available basic social services and amenities provided for the people in these areas. Factors such as levels of medical knowledge and services, nutrition, quantity and quality of housing etc. to some extent influence the quality and duration of lives of the people. As such, their importance cannot be overemphasized when dealing with the issue of population growth. The study aims to examine the rate of population growth in the Federal Capital City, Abuja with respect to the available public provision of basic social services among other objectives. The findings from the data obtained from the Population Survey conducted in the city in 1985 show that the health care facilities available in the capital city are grossly inadequate to serve the entire inhabitants of the city. Moreso, the volume of in-migration into the city also compounds the health problems facing the city. The conclusion is that there is need for more resources to be allocated to the health sector to guarantee adequate and functional health care services in the city.

        Understanding the Technical Properties of Delonix regia (HOOK.) RAF. Wood : A Lesser Used Wood Species

        Properties of a lesser-used wood species were investigated to determine its potential for structural utilization. Trees of Delonix regia were felled and sampled at the base, middle and top and then sectioned to inner wood, middle wood, and outer wood for variation across the axial and radial directions. Hence, selected physical and mechanical properties as well as natural durability of D. regia along the radial and axial directions were examined. Obtained data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05. There was no significant difference in the Moisture content (MC) of the wood but specific gravity (SG) decreased from base to top ranging from 0.35-0.44. Water absorption, volumetric swelling, and volumetric shrinkage range from 46.18-51.86%, 2.57-4.02%, and 2.26-3.96% respectively along the axial plane. The weight loss for graveyard exposure and accelerated laboratory decay test ranged from 25.14-48.00% and 32.02-44.45% respectively. Modulus of Rupture and Modulus of Elasticity values range from 29.42-72.68 Nmm2 and 3,834.54-8,830.37 Nmm2 respectively. The SG values has confirmed the species as a medium density wood and values of other properties tested showed that the wood is dimensional stable and moderately resistance to fungi and termite. Hence, it could be used for light construction purposes such as furniture and other interior woodwork.

        In Vitro Antioxidant Activity and Effect of Parkia biglobosa Bark Extract on Mitochondrial Redox Status

        Aqueous-methanolic extract of Parkia biglobosa bark (PBB) was screened for its polyphe- nolic constituents, in vitro antioxidant activity, and effect on mitochondria redox status. The in vitro antioxidant activity was assessed by using the scavenging abilities and the reducing powers of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2 0 -azino-bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) diammonium salt radical cation against Fe 3þ . Subsequently, the ability of PBB to inhibit lipid peroxidation induced by FeSO 4 (10 mm) and its metal-chelating potential were investigated. The effects of the extract on basal reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and on the mitochondrial membrane potential (DJm) in isolated mitochondria were determined by using 2 0 , 7 0 -dichlorodihy- drofluorescin (DCFH) oxidation and safranin fluorescence, respectively. PBB mitigated the Fe(II)-induced lipid peroxidation in rat tissues and showed dose-dependent scav- enging of DPPH (IC 50 : 98.33 ± 10.0 mg/mL) and ABTS. (trolox equivalent antioxidant concentration, TEAC value = 0.05), with considerable ferric-reducing and moderate metal-chelating abilities. PBB caused slight decreases in both the liver and the brain mitochondria potentials and resulted in a significant decrease (p < 0.001) in DCFH oxida- tion. Screening for polyphenolics using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) revealed the presence of caffeic acid, gallic acid, catechin, epigalocatechin, rutin, and quercetin. These results demonstrate for the first time the considerable in vitro antioxidant activity and favorable effect of PBB on mito- chondria redox status and provide justification for the use of the plant in ethnomedicine.

        A Comparative Study of the Effects of Bromelain and Fresh Pineapple Juice on the Early Phase of Healing in Acute Crush Achilles Tendon Injury

        Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from the stem of the pineapple plant, has been reported to reduce pain and swelling in acute soft tissue injuries, but no study has been done to compare its effect with that of fresh pineapple juice on the healing of acute tendon injuries. This study compared the effects of commercial bromelain and fresh pineapple juice on tenocyte proliferation and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the early stage of healing in a crush injury to the Achilles tendon of Sprague–Dawley rats. Twenty-four male rats were divided randomly into three groups of eight rats each; all the rats had induced crush injury to the Achilles tendon: Group 1 (control), no treatment; Group 2, oral bromelain treatment at a dosage of 7 mg/kg of body weight daily; and Group 3, fresh diluted pineapple juice at a dosage of 30 mg/kg of body weight. Treatment was given over the first 14 days post-injury. On day 15 post-injury, the animals were sacrificed, and the tendons were excised and processed for histological study and MDA assay. Results show a significant difference in the tenocyte population between the bromelain group and the control (P < .05), whereas pineapple juice also increased the tenocyte population, although not significantly (P = .36). Pineapple juice, however, significantly lowered the MDA level compared with both the control and bromelain-treated groups. Based on this study, 600 GDU bromelain given at a dosage of 7 mg/kg had a better effect on tenocyte proliferation than fresh pineapple juice given once daily in acute tendon injury.

        Functional Bioactivities of Soluble Seed Proteins from Two Leguminous Seeds

        Storage proteins from Sphenostylis stenocarpa and Phaseolus lunatus were fractionated, and their in vitro bioactivitieswere investigated. Albumin, globulin, prolamin, and glutelin constituents of the respective seeds were successivelyfractionated using the modified Osborne method. Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (1 mM) was used as a protease inhibitor. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and acetylcholinesterase-inhibitory activities of the protein fractions were evaluatedusing different appropriate techniques. Globulin was the predominant fraction, with a yield of 43.21±0.01% and 48.19±0.03% for S. stenocarpa and P. lunatus, respectively, whereas prolamin was not detected in both seeds. The protein fractionmarkedly scavenges hydroxyl radicals, nitric oxide radicals, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryldydrazyl radicals with concomitanthigh free radical-reducing power. Albumin and globulin fractions elicited the highest acetylcholinesterase-inhibitory potentialof 48.75% and 49.75%, respectively, indicating their great application potential in managing neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, the albumin, globulin, and glutelin fractions of these underutilized legumes showed great analepticbioactivities, which could be utilized as health-promoting dietary supplements/products.

        Tetrapleura tetraptera curtails oxidative and proinflammatory biochemical events in lithium-pilocarpine model of status epilepticus

        Tetrapleura tetraptera Taub. (Fabaceae), commonly known as Aidan is ethnopharmacologically used for the management of health conditions such as diabetes mellitus, leprosy, epilepsy, and stroke in Nigeria. This study evaluated the anti-oxidoinflammatory properties of T. tetraptera methanol leaf extract (TTE) in lithium-pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus in Wistar rats. The extract was phytochemically screened and HPLC fingerprinting was performed. Animals were intraperitoneally administered with 127 mg/kg lithium chloride followed by 25 mg/kg pilocarpine 20 h later to induce status epilepticus. The animals were post treated with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg TTE with 10 mg/kg valproic acid as the reference standard drug. Phytochemical screening of TTE confirmed the presence of tannins, phenols, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides and steroids. Quantitative phytochemical and antioxidant analyses of the extract indicated significant in vitro antioxidant and radical scavenging activity. HPLC analysis of the extract confirmed the presence of aridanin and polyphenols. TTE ameliorated redox imbalance by increasing markers for oxidative stress such as ferric reducing antioxidant power, glutathione level, catalase, glutathione S-transferase and superoxide dismutase activities. Moreover, TTE ameliorated pro-inflammatory events by reducing the level of the pro-inflammatory mediator nitric oxide, attenuating lipid peroxidation (which produces inflammatory lipid peroxidation-derived aldehydes), and decreasing the activities of xanthine oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase in the brain. These results indicated that the leaf of Tetrapleura tetraptera has therapeutic potential against status epilepticus by reversing oxidoinflammatory events. Tetrapleura tetraptera leaf extracts could be used to produce novel plant-based pharmaceuticals for treating status epilepticus and associated disorders.
