Joyce, the Celtic Revival and Irish Modernism

        Nolan, Emer 한국제임스조이스학회 2004 제임스조이스저널 Vol.10 No.2

This essay analyses the place of modernist writers such as W. B. Yeats and James Joyce in the context of the Irish Revival of the early twentieth century and of Ireland's colonial history. It also examines the legacies of Irish modernism in the twentieth-century Irish writing.

      • Neural correlates of oddball detection in self-motion heading: a high-density event-related potential study of vestibular integration.

        Nolan, H,Butler, J S,Whelan, R,Foxe, J J,B?lthoff, H H,Reilly, R B Springer-Verlag 2012 Experimental brain research Vol.219 No.1

<P>The perception of self-motion is a product of the integration of information from both visual and non-visual cues, to which the vestibular system is a central contributor. It is well documented that vestibular dysfunction leads to impaired movement and balance, dizziness and falls, and yet our knowledge of the neuronal processing of vestibular signals remains relatively sparse. In this study, high-density electroencephalographic recordings were deployed to investigate the neural processes associated with vestibular detection of changes in heading. To this end, a self-motion oddball paradigm was designed. Participants were translated linearly 7.8 cm on a motion platform using a one second motion profile, at a 45 angle leftward or rightward of straight ahead. These headings were presented with a stimulus probability of 80-20 %. Participants responded when they detected the infrequent direction change via button-press. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were calculated in response to the standard (80 %) and target (20 %) movement directions. Statistical parametric mapping showed that ERPs to standard and target movements differed significantly from 490 to 950 ms post-stimulus. Topographic analysis showed that this difference had a typical P3 topography. Individual participant bootstrap analysis revealed that 93.3 % of participants exhibited a clear P3 component. These results indicate that a perceived change in vestibular heading can readily elicit a P3 response, wholly similar to that evoked by oddball stimuli presented in other sensory modalities. This vestibular-evoked P3 response may provide a readily and robustly detectable objective measure for the evaluation of vestibular integrity in various disease models.</P>

Development of Fast Prototyping Pneumatic Actuated Grippers

Nolan Jackson,Paul Chastain,Mitch Crowther,Minchul Shin 한국정밀공학회 2019 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.20 No.12

The goal of this paper is to develop biologically inspired soft robotic hands by using cheap commercial materials. Through finite elemental analysis and material testing, this paper shows effectiveness of a soft pneumatic finger for gripping and lifting. Using ANSYS simulations, the designs were analyzed in pressures, 0.0035 MPa and 0.007 MPa. This low pressure could output high deformations of the actuators. A single finger was able to withstand 25.3 N before failure, while being able to lift 15.3 g by itself under a low voltage air pump. When combing into a claw like gripper of four fingers it was able to lift roughly 8 times that of a single finger, around 130 g. This demonstration of a functional low-cost bio-inspired pneumatic finger showcases the potential for everyday use where a delicate touch is needed. Also, the high dexterity makes it a good design for use in manufacturing or medical areas.

Getting Down to the Bare Bones: Does laminoplasty or laminectomy With Fusion Provide Better Outcomes for Patients With Multilevel Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy?

        Nolan J. Brown,Brian V. Lien,Shane Shahrestani,Elliot H. Choi,Katelynn Tran,Sandra Gattas,Seth C. Ransom,Ali R. Tafreshi,Ryan Chase Ransom,Ronald Sahyouni,Alvin Chan,Michael Oh 대한척추신경외과학회 2021 Neurospine Vol.18 No.1

Objective: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative disorder leading to progressive decline in spinal cord function. Cervical laminoplasty (CLP) and cervical laminectomy with fusion (CLF) are standard treatments for multilevel CSM. However, it is still unclear whether one procedure over the other provides better outcomes. Here, we performed a comprehensive review of published articles that compare the clinical outcomes and costs between CLP and CLF for CSM. Methods: A literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases. Strict exclusion criteria were applied, and included articles were then assessed for publication year, study design, and significant differences in outcome variables. Results: From 519 studies identified with search terms, 38 studies were included for the qualitative analysis. Statistically significant differences in the clinical outcomes and costs were found in 18 studies. Eleven studies were prospective or retrospective, and 8 studies were meta-analyses. For the outcome variables of interest, results were reported by classifying into prospective studies, retrospective studies, and meta-analyses. Conclusion: CLP and CLF are 2 of the most commonly performed surgical procedures for the treatment of CSM. Although CLP and CLF each provide satisfactory clinical outcomes for patients with CMS, CLP may result in better cervical range of motion and less cost, length of stay, operation time, blood loss, paraspinal muscular atrophy, and rate of nerve palsies as compared to CLF. The major limitation of CLP versus CLF comparison studies includes the heterogeneity in techniques and preoperative criteria. Thus, further validation and investigations in larger cohorts will be required.

Computer Aided Composition, Timbral Synthesis, & Electro-Acoustic SuperInstruments: An Exploration of Heaviness in Electro-Acoustic Chamber Music

Nolan Hildebrand 한국전자음악협회 2022 에밀레 Vol.20 No.-

In his article 'Reigen seliger Geister' (On My Second String Quartet) (2004), Helmut Lachenmann used the term super-instrument to describe moments in his work where the string quartet is treated homophonically as a single “16-stringed sonic mechanism” through “unison sound and unison rustling, i.e. the synchronous multiplication or amplification of sound or noise” (2004, p. 62) and/or the “parallel deployment of tones greatly separated in sonic space” (2004, pp. 64). In my Masters Thesis composition “Tripping in the Horror Vacui” for amplified violin, amplified cello, and amplified piano with electronics, Lachenmann’s idea of the super-instrument is extended with digital music technology and electro-acoustic tools such as computer aided composition, timbral synthesis, live processing, and multichannel spatialization. By utilizing computer aided composition, the composer/author derived pitch information from noisy samples of raw data sonfications used in the work’s fixed media/“tape track”. This pitch material derived from the raw data sonifications in the fixed media is then mapped to the performer’s instrumental writing to create homophonic textures. The material between the performers and the fixed media is then synthesized in the performance space with either a stereo or 7.1 multichannel speaker setup to create a huge and distorted electro-acoustic super-instrument. Creating these electro-acoustic super-instruments in my own works allows me to sculpt enormous melodic gestures that stretch out over the multichannel speaker setup thus also incorporating the “parallel deployment of tones greatly separated in sonic space” (2004, pp. 64). In Tripping in The Horror Vacui, these larger-than-life electro-acoustic superinstruments embody a maximalist aesthetic to create a heavy and sublime experience that overwhelms the audience through metal music tropes, density, intensity, and amplitude.

Evaluating Geographic Differences in Electricity Burdens: An Analysis of Socioeconomic and Housing Characteristics in Erie County, New York

Nolan W. Kukla 아시아기술혁신학회 2023 Asian Journal of Innovation and Policy Vol.12 No.1

The increasing cost, and demand for, household energy has increased attention to the phenomena of energy burdens. Despite this increased attention, a lack of consensus remains in pinpointing the strongest predictors, and geographic differences, that exist within the energy ecosystem. This study addresses this gap by utilizing a series of dummy variable regressions across cities, suburbs, and rural areas within Erie County, New York—a county noted to have particularly high energy burdens. Specifically, three types of predictor sets were incorporated into the methodology: a set of socioeconomic variables, physical variables, and a combination of both variable sets. The results of this study suggest that cities tend to have the highest electricity burdens. Despite the aging infrastructure in Erie County, high energy burdens were driven primarily by socioeconomic factors such as housing cost burden and poverty status. Lastly, this study explores various planning and policy implications Erie County can utilize to reduce energy burdens. In turn, this study highlights the importance of focusing policy efforts on existing social service programs to provide support to the region’s neediest households.

TEE on the Web: A Program Development Case Study

        Nolan Lansdale,Kyung-Mi O 팬코리아영어교육학회(구 영남영어교육학회) 2012 영어교육연구 Vol.24 No.3

This Teaching English in English (TEE) study describes the process of developing and revising a TEE: online teacher support program. Since the year 2001, teaching English in English has been implemented in primary and secondary schools in Korea, and for the last decade, numerous research in TEE has been carried out with respect to teachers,’ and/or students’ perceptions, teacher evaluation criteria, etc. However, despite much rigorous research, the implementation of TEE in the actual classroom seems to be quite far from successful, with one of the major reasons being the lack of ample TEE preparation materials available. In this context, this study is designed to develop an online TEE self-study material which takes the form of an online community site with YouTube. Data was collected from current secondary school teachers; a questionnaire was administered to twelve middle/high school teachers, and among the twelve, in-depth interviews were carried out with two middle school teachers. Throughout the survey and the interview data analyses, the current TEE: Online Teacher Support Program was revised and upgraded to a teacher assistance program for TEE. The program is expected to be used as a stepping stone for a number of online TEE support programs.
