Barley (Hordeum vulgare) belongs to the Poaceae family. This study compared the polyphenol and flavonoid levels of unfermented and fermented barley sprouts using spectrophotometric assays. The findings indicated that fermentation greatly boosted the flavonoid content but caused only a slight increase in the polyphenol content. However, this does not imply that fermentation has no effects whatsoever on the polyphenol content of barley sprouts. This was due to the fact that some flavonoids cannot be detected by the wavelength used to calculate the overall polyphenol concentration. Both samples were subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography analysis and detected the flavonoids lutonarin, saponarin, isoorientin, isovitexin, and tricin—all of which have bioactive properties—most notably known for their antioxidant activity. These results augment the ongoing phytochemical profiling research and can possibly valorize the already thriving barley industry.
Effect of PCBs on Egg and Larval Development of Beet Armyworm, Spodoptera exigua

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nondegradable pollutants that are known to affect physiology of organisms. To assess the physiological alteration of the pollutants on insects, the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, was used as a model insect because of its wide-range occurrence and high biochemical detoxification against toxic chemicals. Low ppb levels of PCBs applied on newly laid eggs of S. exigua were found to inhibit egg development and later larval development. Larvae fed with PCB-contaminated artificial diet (below ppb levels) exhibited significant mortalities, though it did not affect the capacity of diet consumption or digestibility. PCBs injected into larval hemocoel of S. exigua were not excreted. In vitro assay showed that PCBs induced some fat body esterases of S. exigua. However, PCBs did not affect juvenile hormone esterase activity in larval hemolymph of S. exigua. These results suggest that the immature stages of S. exigua are highly susceptible, but responsive to PCBs by inducing some esterases.
The contribution of Aspergillus fumigatus stress responses to virulence and antifungal resistance
Neil A. Brown,Gustavo H. Goldman 한국미생물학회 2016 The journal of microbiology Vol.54 No.3
Invasive aspergillosis has emerged as one of the most common life-threatening fungal disease of humans. The emergence of antifungal resistant pathogens represents a current and increasing threat to society. In turn, new strategies to combat fungal infection are urgently required. Fungal adaptations to stresses experienced within the human host are a prerequisite for the survival and virulence strategies of the pathogen. Here, we review the latest information on the signalling pathways in Aspergillus fumigatus that contribute to stress adaptations and virulence, while highlighting their potential as targets for the development of novel combinational antifungal therapies.

Background/Aims: Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) is a rare acquired vascular lesion of the gastric antrum. The most frequentpresentation of GAVE is iron deficiency anemia. Endoscopic therapy is the mainstay of treatment. However, there is no consensusregarding the optimal treatment modality. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients with GAVE, including patients receiving endoscopic therapy. Treatment was with either argon plasma coagulation (APC) or endoscopic band ligation (EBL). Basic demographic data, indicationfor index procedure, number of sessions, and pre- and post-hemoglobin levels were collected. The aim of the study was to compareoutcomes across the two treatment modalities. Results: One hundred and seventeen diagnoses of GAVE were made. Sixty-two patients (53%) required endoscopic treatment forsymptomatic GAVE (female, n=38, 61%; mean age of 74.4 years). Two hundred and eighteen procedures were performed duringthe study period. APC was performed (n=161, 74%) more frequently than EBL (n=57, 26%). Patients treated with APC at indexrequired a median 5 subsequent therapeutic interventions (APC or EBL), while those treated with EBL at index required a further 2.9treatments (EBL only) (p<0.05). Conclusions: APC was the most common treatment modality employed. We demonstrate an increasing incidence of EBL. Patientstreated with EBL at index treatment required fewer subsequent treatment sessions and had a greater mean rise in hemoglobin. Thissuggests a more effective endoscopic response with EBL.

This paper argues that metaphysical unity (a transcendental moment of being complete, free from contradiction and anxiety) is ultimately the locus of John Donne’s work and that by perceiving it as does bring direction and purpose to the object of his poetry, which is not offered by a lot of the existing body of criticism because it lacks orientation. Centrally Achsah Guibbory’s seminal essay “John Donne” will be employed not only as an example of this criticism but in order to outline the central themes, contradictions and anxieties that define Donne’s poetry. Moreover, In order to accomplish this, I focus upon those poems that best exemplify metaphysical unity, primarily “The good-morrow,” “The Extasie” and “The Sunne Rising;” and furthermore, in the case of the latter of these poems, I argue that the final line of verse: “This bed thy center is, these wall, thy spheare,” is the demonstration of Donne’s metaphysical unity in its purist form.
