My dissertation topic is on the impact of changes in the monetary policy interest rate target on bank distress and systemic risk in the U.S. banking system. The financial crisis of 2007--2009 had devastating effects on the banking system worldwi. The system would give a homeowner the capability to remotely control various systems in their home (lights, alarm, heating/cooling sensors) through any touch-tone telephone. The owner simply connects the system to devices in the house and to a phone line. To alter any of the attached devices, he/she simply places a call to that phone line. After the system picks up and the owner enters his PIN, he may continue through a tone driven menu and control any of the household devices that are connected to the system. With this system, the user will be able to run On or OFF a switch which then enables a teleremote control of an appliance through the phone line or a touch tone pad under control of the microcontroller.

Zero baryon density Lattice QCD calculations confirm the existence of a deconfined state of partonic matter at very high temperatures and energy densities, such a state, called the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), is argued to feature a major phase of the expanding matter created in Heavy Ion Collisions (HIC) at RHIC and the LHC experiments. Many developments on the quantitative description of QGP have been worked out by the different experimental groups, however the picture is far from complete. Unlike light quarks, heavy quarks are created at the very early stages of the collision, their numbers are "almost" conserved throughout the expansion and their interactions with the medium is amenable to perturbative QCD calculations. Therefore, comparing their kinematics in heavy-ion collisions to theoretical calculations offers a unique opportunity to extract medium properties and constrain the dynamics of the high transverse momentum (high- pT) partons interaction with the medium. So far, experiments studied two observables of heavy quarks. Firstly, the modification of heavy quarks production in presence of the QGP compared to the baseline production in p+p and d+Au collisions. Secondly, to understand the involvement of heavy quarks in the collective motion of the bulk medium expansion, azimuthal anisotropy measurements are invoked. Our research focuses on simultaneous measurements of azimuthal anisotropy and production of electrons from heavy flavor semi-leptonic decay channels. The strong modification of the production of these electrons in Au +Au collisions compared to p+ p at sNN = 200 GeV surprised the community; early calculation of medium-induced gluon radiation, which describes the energy loss of light quarks, predicted much less suppression for heavy flavor quarks. This led to a variety theoretical proposals for energy loss mechanisms to account for this strong suppression. Understanding which theoretical model(s) provide the most accurate description of experimental measurements has many physical implications on the flavor dependence of energy loss, heavy quarks-medium interaction strength and their degree of thermalization, constraining the decoupling temperature of heavy quarks from the bulk matter, in addition to delineating the importance of the different hadronization mechanisms to the different heavy quarks kinematical domains. At this stage it is evident that experiments at RHIC and the LHC need to provide higher precision differential measurements to better distinguish between the plethora of energy loss models currently available. To this end, in this work, we present a simultaneous measurement of mid-rapidity heavy flavor electron differential invariant yields and azimuthal anisotropy in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV. The novelty of the new invariant yield measurement lies in the highly improved statistical precision it provides. This new measurement allows us to recalculate the heavy flavor electron nuclear modification factor using published STAR p+p results as a baseline. We also extend heavy quarks production studies to lower center-of-mass collision energies. In this quest, we seek to see if the energy loss of heavy quarks is lessened or turned off at lower energies or constrain the onset collision energy of heavy quarks suppression and flow. Therefore, we also present measurements of mid-rapidity differential invariant yield at sNN = 62.4 and azimuthal anisotropy at sNN = 39 and 62.4 GeV.

본 논문은 한국인의 난민에 대한 지식, 위협 인식 그리고 한국 미디어의 난민에 관한 보도를 탐구하는 것이 목표이다. 첫째, 한국인의 난민에 대한 지식은 26 명을 대상으로 한 개방형 설문조사를 통해 알아보았다. 둘째, 상징적 위협 인식, 실질적 위협 인식 그리고 언론 보도에 대한 만족도를 측정하기 위해서 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였다. 셋째, 한국내 난민을 보도한 신문 기사가 어떠한 접근 방식과 주제 패턴을 가지고 있는지 알아보고자 했다. 이를 위해 주제의 분석 이론을 도구로 이용하였으며, 조선일보 및 한겨레 신문사를 중심으로 관련 기사를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 한국내 난민 이슈와 난민 현황과 관련해서 한국인들의 지식이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 상징적 위협 인식 및 실질적 위협 인식은 나타나긴 하였지만, 유의미하게 높은 정도로 나타나지 않았다. 셋째, 조선일보 및 한겨레 기사 분석과 관련해서는 여섯 가지 주제가 나타났다. 그 주제는 인도적 관점, 대중의 태도, 정부의 태도, 난민지위 인정 결정의 절차 케이스 소개, 난민에 호의적이지 않은 관점 그리고 난민의 한국 유입이다. 예멘 난민 문제가 이슈가 되기 전까지만 해도 한국에 있는 난민에 대한 언론 기사가 매우 부족한 것으로 보였다. 또한 난민법과 난민 현황, 그리고 특히 인정된 난민 현황과 생활에 대한 정보 제공이 매우 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 앞으로 정확한 정보를 제공한다 하더라도, 이미 한국인들의 지식과 언론의 정확한 보도가 부족했기 때문에 그들의 부정적인 인식과 태도를 올바르게 잡기에는 어려움이 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 한국인에게 미디어를 통한 정보 제공의 필요성과 정확한 보도의 중요성을 강조한다. This study aims to explore South Koreans’ knowledge, threat perceptions and attitudes, as well as Korean media coverage of refugees in South Korea. First, knowledge of refugees was measured by conducting an open-ended question survey with 26 Korean participants. Second, an online survey was conducted to measure symbolic and realistic threat perceptions as well as Korean’s satisfaction with the media coverage. Third, a thematic analysis was applied to two Korean newspaper articles, specifically Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh articles, to find patterns of topics being approached by Korean mainstream mass media regarding refugees or asylum seekers in South Korea. The results indicate that Koreans lack knowledge in terms of refugees’ issues and especially in regard to the current South Korea context. When it comes to symbolic and realistic threat, Koreans did not demonstrate a significant awareness of these two types of threat, although they were present in their answers to the open-ended question survey and the online survey. When it comes to the two newspaper articles, Hankyoreh and Chosun Ilbo, six themes were unveiled during the analysis: humanitarian perspective, public attitudes, government attitudes, introducing RSD (refugee status determination) process cases, unfavorable refugees, and refugees’ inflow to South Korea. Newspaper coverage of refugees in South Korea turned out to be very insufficient in informing and creating awareness about refugees in South Korea. There seemed to be an extreme lack of published articles until the spurge during the heated issue of Yemenis refugees in Jeju Island. There also seemed to be a lack of information about the country’s policies regarding asylum seekers and especially integrated refugees. This insufficient coverage and subsequent lack of knowledge can have an important role in developing misconceptions and therefore negative perceptions and attitudes towards refugees, that become increasingly more difficult to ameliorate through the dissemination of more accurate information with the passage of time. This research emphasizes the need for informing people, and the importance of providing accurate information through media coverage. The limitations of this study are, first, the limited number of participants in the online survey, second, the use of articles from only two Korean newspapers as a basis for media thematic analysis, third, lack of previous studies regarding.
Development of Signal Health Management Techniques for Anomaly Detection in Nuclear Reactors

On-line Monitoring (OLM) recently became popular for nuclear industry applications. When analyzing industrial system’s data, bad data that is caused by electronics’ error such as; noise, outliers, and missing data can corrupt any diagnosing model and generate unreliable results, and that’s why bad data should be removed before implementing any decision step. Considering safety-related instrumentation in nuclear reactors, the redundant sensors are installed to alleviate the impact of bad data but their conditions should be more carefully monitored on-line, too, in order to maintain safety and operability. Therefore, in this study two tasks were performed; 1st task is to handle noise, outliers, and missing data at once, and 2nd task is to improve the on-line Cross Calibration (CC) averaging method applied to redundant sensors for the sake of diagnostics and system health management. In the first task of this study, two new filters based on the well-known Moving Average and Moving Median techniques were introduced and proposed for cleaning noise, outliers, and missing data in a single technique, these filters are called “Cross Moving Average (CMA)” and “Cross Moving Median (CMM)”. Comparing these filters performance with the conventional Autoregressive model, Moving Average (MA), and Moving Median (MM) methods and evaluating them under some statistical evaluation criteria, the result of CMA and CMM showed a competitive performance. The second task in this study was performed in two paths; one is improving Parity Space Averaging technique, which is an important technique among CC techniques, by involving a new weighting factor based on distance instead of the weighting factor based on sensor’s accuracy that was implemented in the Instrument Calibration and Monitoring Program (ICMP) by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). the other is to introduce another two new weighting factors; one based on trend consistency, and one based on the attenuation of outliers, to integrate the advantages of all conventional CC averaging techniques. When implemented on redundant signals from reactor facilities, these weighting factors effectively worked to isolate signals’ anomalies comparing to the method implemented in the ICMP.

(A) micromechanical approach for the prediction of fatigue life in composite laminates

A micromechanics based fatigue life prediction of composite laminates under multi-axial loading was developed. Many mechanical tests are required to fully characterize the composite laminates made of various materials and having different layup sequences. In order to reduce number of tests, a methodology was presented in this paper to predict fatigue life of composite laminates based on fatigue life of constituents, i.e. the fiber, matrix and interface, using micromechanics of failure (MMF). For matrix, the equivalent stress model which is generally used for isotropic materials was employed to take care of multi-axial fatigue loading. For fiber, a maximum stress model considering only stress along fiber direction was used. Critical plane model was introduced for the interface of the fiber and matrix, but interface fatigue strength was presumed strong enough than that of matrix and fiber and, therefore, its failure was ignored. The modified Goodman approach was utilized to take into account the mean stress effect. In order to validate the proposed methodology, the fatigue life of three different GFRP laminates, UDT[90°], BX[±45°]S and TX[0°2/±45°]S, was examined experimentally. The predictions are compared with the experimental data, and are shown in good agreement. A comprehensive implementation example is also presented for the case of composite wind turbine rotor blade structure.
Hybrid Beamforming for Millimeter-Wave Relay-Assisted MIMO Systems

Conclusion and Future Work The primary focus of the presented work in this thesis is to address the hybrid transceiver design for next generation of mobile cellular networks. Keeping this perspective in view, an endeavor was made to propose the low-complexity solution of hybrid precoding design for a single-user mmWave MIMO system by taking into account the frequency selective channels. The concept of hybrid beamforming was applied on different relay-assisted mmWave MIMO communication networks to extend the transmission range, network coverage and the enhancement of spectral efficiency. The first hybrid beamforming design was proposed for multi-user MIMO relay system under frequency selective channels. The second hybrid precoding design was proposed in an attempt to combine the hybrid processing and relay selection strategy to maximize the performance of system, when channel conditions are not favorable for reliable data transmission. The third relay-assisted hybrid beamforming was designed by considering a single-user multi-relay MIMO system under wideband assumption. These relay based architectures enable the mmWave MIMO network efficient and reliable in outdoor environments. Computer simulations reveal that the proposed hybrid beamforming algorithms show near-optimal performance under different system configuration parameters. There is a definite need to address hybrid transceiver design problems by taking into account the estimation of mmWave channel with acceptable level of accuracy while minimizing the computational burden associated with this process. Deep learning models may have the potential to address this problem but they require huge amount of data for training purpose and these algorithms shift the computational complexity from real-time to off-line training. By exploiting the potential of deep learning frameworks, the performance of the proposed algorithms for different relay-assisted MIMO networks may be improved and, it may be considered as a promising future direction to extend the research work in this thesis.

The process of data collection includes two parts. The first part is the questionnaire survey, which is used to obtain the percentage effect of each one of the seven transit performance measures on the evaluation of level of transit service (LOTS) for the selected bus routes and bus network. The second part includes collection of field data to determine the level of transit service of the seven transit performance measures. The results of this study showed that bus routes No. (72, 36, 13, 114, 11, 30, 37, and 9) are operating at overall LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, D, E, and E) respectively, whereas the bus network (Al-Nasr bus network) is operating at overall LOTS (E). It was concluded that the application of some remedial actions will improve the overall LOTS of the bus routes No. (72, 36, 13, 114, 11, 30, 37, and 9) from LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, D, E, and E) to LOTS (C, D, C, D, D, C, D, and D), whereas the overall LOTS for bus network is improved from LOTS (E) to LOTS (D). 대중 버스 시스템 (여객 운송을위한 General Company 의 버스)은 바그다드시 대중 교통의 기본 모드이다. 이 시스템은 많은 문제를 안고 있는데, 그 중 일부는 버스 노선과 관련이 있고 다른 부분은 버스 및 운영자와 관련이 있다. 이러한 문제는 대중 교통 버스 사용자에게 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 Al-Nasr 버스 네트워크로 대표되는 8 개의 대중 교통 버스 노선의 성능을 평가하고 개선하는 것이다. 네트워크 서비스는 바그다드시의 다른 방향으로 일부 노선에서 운영하는 버스를 통해 소개된다. 선택된 버스 노선의 평가 프로세스는 7 가지로 대중 교통 성능 측정에 대한 대중 교통 서비스 수준 (LOTS)을 평가하여 수행 할 수 있다. 이러한 측정에는 버스 이동 시간, 주간 서비스 시간, 서비스 빈도 (간격), 경로의 총 지연, 버스 운행 속도, 버스 점유 및 경로 용량이 포함된다. 데이터 수집 프로세스는 두 부분으로 구성된다. 첫 번째 부분은 설문 조사로, 선택한 버스 노선 및 버스 네트워크에 대한 대중 교통 서비스 수준 (LOTS) 평가에 대한 7 개의 대중 교통 성능 측정치 각각의 백분율 효과를 얻기 위해 사용된다. 두 번째 부분에는 7 가지 운송 성능 측정의 운송 서비스 수준을 결정하기 위한 현장 데이터 수집이 포함된다. 이 연구의 결과 버스 노선 번호 (72, 36, 13, 114, 11, 30, 37, 9)가 전체 LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, D, E, E) 각각, 버스 네트워크 (Al-Nasr 버스 네트워크)는 전체 LOTS (E)에서 작동한다. 일부 개선 조치를 적용하면 LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, D, E, E)에서 LOTS (C, D, C, D, D, C, D 및 D)로, 버스 네트워크의 전체 LOTS 는 LOTS (E)에서 LOTS (D)로 향상되었다.
