High-Accuracy Positioning in 5G-NR: Is carrier phase the answer?
Muhammad Tabish Niaz,Sunwoo Kim 한국통신학회 2022 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2022 No.2
With the constant evolution of 5G new radio (NR), it is anticipated that positioning will be a fundamental feature demanded by most commercial applications. Location based services will demand tighten requirement with respect to positioning accuracy and latency. Recently, carrier phase-based positioning has gained a momentum to be a prime candidate for high-accuracy positioning in 5G-NR future releases. This paper presents a brief insight of the latest discussions and techniques utilizing carrier phase for positioning in future 5G-NR releases.

This study proposes a receiver for an asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing system that utilises the total least-squares (TLS) technique. Commonly used estimation techniques such as least squares, diversity combining, minimum-mean-square-error, and pairwise maximum likelihood ignore the perturbation present while estimating the received signal, which causes the estimated signal to be inaccurate. In this study, a TLS-based receiver is proposed, which takes into consideration the errors present in both the data matrix (channel) and the observation matrix (received signal). While this technique is suboptimal, it is shown that with reasonable computational complexity it has an acceptable performance in a scenario with low processing capability and low battery power. Simulations are carried out for both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight optical channels and the performance is analysed on the basis of bit error rate versus E-b/N-0 where E-b is the energy received per information bit and N-0 is the noise power spectral density.

Wireless technology is paving its way to the next generation of communication system: 5G. As the radio spectrum is exhausted, the need for the use of free unlicensed frequency band is increasing. One of the possible solutions is to use visible light communication (VLC) for indoor applications. VLC utilizes light emitting diodes (LED) for providing illumination and data communication. Hence for VLC to work for high data rate and mobile applications, there is a need to maintain a steady received optical power distribution (ROPD) over the reference receiving plane. To tackle this issue the placement of LEDs with in the room plays an important part. This paper proposes circular LED deployment technique to improve the ROPD at the receiving plane.

Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is one of the few promising techniques that can ensure the achievement of benefits foreseen in next-generation 5G wireless networks and beyond. By using superposition coding, NOMA allows multiple users to share the same time and frequency resources, thereby enhancing user connectivity, spectral efficiency, and a considerable increase in user throughput. Interference mitigation is an important consideration in NOMA and is considerably more influencing in multicellular environments. First, a brief description of the impairments that can arise in a NOMA cellular network along with responsible factors is provided. Second, different approaches adopted to minimize these impairments are discussed. Finally, a possible solution is proposed that consists of a coordinated approach between the individual cells in the NOMA domain to minimize interferences and improve user throughput. Adaptive fractional frequency reuse (FFR) is used to allocate distinct frequency resources to edge users of different cells to minimize intercell interference in NOMA. Simulation results prove that the proposed NOMA scheme plays an important role in minimizing impairment effects and enhancing the SINR and the throughput performance of edge users while ensuring fairness in its design.

Railway Track Structural Health Monitoring System
Fatima Imdad,Muhammad Tabish Niaz,Hyung Seok Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2015 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2015 No.10
Railway is one of the most used means of transportation. For the railway system to operate flawlessly constant monitoring and inspection of railway tracks is required. Currently railway track inspection and monitoring is done manually which is time taking and not accurate, due to the high chance of human error occurrence. Moreover, practically it is impossible to inspect and monitor the railway track manually as they run thousands of miles. To avoid this we propose a prototype system, designed for continuous monitoring of railway tracks using a combination of sensors. These sensors collect data and through computational analysis faults in the railway tracks are identified. The collected data can help in finding cracks in the tracks and catastrophic accidents can be avoided.
