Kinetics, isothermal and mechanistic insight into the adsorption of eosin yellow and malachite green from water via tri-metallic layered double hydroxide nanosheets

        Muhammad Altaf Nazir,Tayyaba Najam,Muhammad Sohail Bashir,Muhammad Sufyan Javed,Muhammad Aswad Bashir,Muhammad Imran,Umair Azhar,Syed Shoaib Ahmad Shah,Aziz ur Rehman 한국화학공학회 2022 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.39 No.1

The use of highly efficient, environment-friendly and economically inexpensive materials for the adsorption removal of contaminants from water has always been considered as emerging task. In this study, we synthesized hybrid tri-metallic nickel cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCoAl-LDH) porous material for the adsorption removal of Eosin yellow (EY) and Malachite green (MG) from water. The characterization results disclosed that tri-metallic LDH has been synthesized with extraordinary purity, identical morphology and high surface area (134.21 m2·g−1). The NiCoAl-LDH performs the best for adsorption of EY (qe=37.30mg·g−1 at pH=2) and MG (qe=39.61 mg·g−1 at pH=10). The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to explain the adsorption process of dyes on the surface of LDH. The Langmuir model (R2=0.991 and 0.999 for Eosin Y and Malachite G, respectively) was very appropriate to explain the process of adsorption on NiCoAl-LDH as homogeneous (monolayer). The maximum adsorption capacity of EY and MG calculated with Langmuir model was 78.74 and 110.13 mg·g−1 at 30 °C, respectively. Also with 240 minutes contact time 94.8% EY and 89.9% MG was adsorbed by as synthesized NiCoAl-LDH nanosheets. The NiCoAl-LDH nanosheets showed excellent performance of reusability of up to five regeneration cycles. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of NiCoAl-LDH nanosheets after five regeneration cycles, to adsorb EY, decreased only from 40.80 to 36.93 mg·g−1 and that of MG from 79.21 to 75.42 mg·g−1, which is acceptable. The overall results Suggest that the fabricated NiCoAl-LDH is favorable for the purification of dye contaminated water.

Distal pancreatectomy outcomes: Perspectives from a community-based teaching institution

        Muhammad Umair Bashir,Apostolos Kandilis,Nancy M. Jackson,Janak A. Parikh,Michael J. Jacobs 한국간담췌외과학회 2020 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.24 No.2

Backgrounds/Aims: Distal pancreatic resections are intricate operations with potential for significant morbidity; there is controversy surrounding the appropriate setting regarding surgeon/hospital volume. We report our distal pancreatectomy experience from a community-based teaching hospital. Methods: This study includes all patients who underwent laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) and open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) for benign and malignant lesions between June 2004 and October 2017. Both groups were compared for perioperative characteristics, parenchymal resection technique, and outcomes. Results: 138 patients underwent distal pancreatectomy during this time. The distribution of LDP and ODP was 68 and 70 respectively. Operative time (146 vs. 174 min), blood loss (139 vs. 395 ml) and mean length of stay (4.8 vs. 8.0 days) were significantly lower in the laparoscopic group. The 30-day Clavien Grade 2/3 morbidity rate was 13.7% (19/138) and the incidence of Grade B/C pancreatic fistula was 6.5% (9/138), with no difference between ODP and LDP. 30-day mortality was 0.7% (1/138). 61/138 resections had a malignancy on final pathology. ODP mean tumor diameter was greater (6.4 cm vs. 2.9 cm), but there was no significant difference in the mean number of harvested nodes (8.6 vs. 7.4). The cost of hospitalization, including readmissions and surgery was significantly lower for LDP ($7558 vs. $11610). Conclusions: This series of distal pancreatectomies indicates a shorter hospital stay, less operative blood loss and reduced cost in the LDP group, and comparable morbidity and oncologic outcomes between LDP and ODP. It highlights the feasibility and safety of these complex surgeries in a community setting.

      • Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer: a Case-control Study in Faisalabad, Pakistan

Bashir, Muhammad Naeem,Ahmad, Muhammad Riaz,Malik, Akram Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.23

Background: Prostate cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer among males in Pakistan but very little is known about risk factors among the Pakistani population. Therefore a hospital-based, case-control study was carried out in Faisalabad to identify potential risk factors. Materials and Methods: This study was based on 140 prostate cancer cases and 280 normal controls. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for odds ratios to assess the relationship between prostate cancer and different risk factors. Results: Family history of prostate cancer, age, smoking, obesity, consumption of red meat and frequent use of fat items significantly increased the prostate cancer risk (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of: 7.32; 1.79-29.8; 16.9, 5.60-50.8; 2.47, 1.17-5.18; 5.79, 2.66-12.6; 2.71, 1.07-6.91; and 3.39, 1.47-7.83, respectively. On the other hand, more consumption of fruit, fluid intake and better lifestyle (physical activity) significantly reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer with odd ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals of: 0.27, 0.11-0.61; 0.05, 0.02-0.12; and 0.28, 0.13-0.58. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggested that age, family history of prostate cancer, smoking, obesity, fluid intake, frequent use of fat items, consumption of fruits and better lifestyle might be associated with prostate cancer among Pakistani males.

Bashir, Muhammad Naeem,Malik, Muhammad Akram Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.6

Background: The effects of diet on epidemiology of prostate cancer are inconclusive. Therefore a hospitalbased, case-control study was conducted in a rural population of Faisalabad, Pakistan, to examine the impact of dietary factors on risk of cancer development. Materials and Methods: This study was based on 102 confirmed cases of prostate cancer and 204 normal controls. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for odds ratios to evaluate the relationship between prostate cancer and diet. Results: Consumption of red meat and fat items significantly increased the prostate cancer risk having odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 3.41; 1.46-7.96 and 2.45; 1.17-5.15, respectively. On the other hand, more consumption of vegetables, fluid intake and fruit significantly decreased the prostate cancer risk (odd ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals of 0.21; 0.10-0.44, 0.10; 0.05- 0.19 and 0.09; 0.03- 0.23, respectively. Conclusions: The present study supports the hypothesis that frequent consumption of red meat and fat items may increase prostate cancer risk while more intake of fruit, vegetables and fluid intake may protect against prostate cancer in the relatively low risk group in rural Pakistan.

A Multi-layer Parallel Crack Extension Model for Deformational Response of Post-installed Anchor

Muhammad Saleem,Asad Ullah Qazi,Asif Hameed,Muhammad Aun Bashir 대한토목학회 2013 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.17 No.5

A simultaneous crack extension pull-out model for post-installed anchor bar is presented. The anchor bar is such that used in various strengthening techniques to strengthen reinforced concrete structures. The properties of the infill material used for postinstalled anchor bar are characterized by a nonlinear interface between the surrounding concrete and the anchor bar. This is a new type of anchor-infill assembly in which the infill material is divided into two layers for the purpose of providing a larger failure path length resulting in increase of the energy absorption and pull-out load capacity. The mechanical properties of the infill layer are different from the surrounding concrete. Therefore the existing pull-out model of deformed bars cannot be applied directly in this case. The interfacial de-bonding is examined by the strength criterion expressed in terms of interfacial shear stress. Pre-existing cracks representing artificial notches are assumed at the top of infill layers for identifying crack location and stabilizing its propagation direction. All the possibilities associated with two-cracks in the close vicinity have been investigated in detail. The objective of the analysis is to predict a set of material properties which result in simultaneous crack extension at the two interfaces and also to identify a simultaneous crack extension length which results in increasing the pull-out load capacity, increase in energy absorption and increased failure path length but achieved at lowest increase in pull-out deformation thereby proving the effectiveness of two-layer model. Limiting the pull-out deformation is desirable from the point of view of limiting damage.

Prediction of ultimate moment anchorage capacity of concrete filled steel box footing

Muhammad Aun Bashir,Hitoshi Furuuchi,Tamon Ueda,M. Nauman Bashir 국제구조공학회 2013 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.15 No.6

The objective of the study is to predict the moment anchorage capacity of the concrete filled steel box (CFSB) as footing by using the 3D finite element program CAMUI developed by authors' laboratory. The steel box is filled with concrete and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column is inserted in the box. Numerical simulation of the experimental specimens was carried out after introducing the new constitutive model for post peak behavior of concrete in compression under confinement. The experimental program was conducted to verify the reliability of the simulation results by the FE program. The simulated peak loads agree reasonably with the experimental ones and was controlled by concrete crushing near the column. After confirming the reliability of the FEM simulation, effects of different parameters on the moment anchorage capacity of concrete filled steel box footing were clarified by conducting numerically parametric study.

Deep Hashing for Semi-supervised Content Based Image Retrieval

( Muhammad Khawar Bashir ),( Yasir Saleem ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2018 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.12 No.8

Content-based image retrieval is an approach used to query images based on their semantics. Semantic based retrieval has its application in all fields including medicine, space, computing etc. Semantically generated binary hash codes can improve content-based image retrieval. These semantic labels / binary hash codes can be generated from unlabeled data using convolutional autoencoders. Proposed approach uses semi-supervised deep hashing with semantic learning and binary code generation by minimizing the objective function. Convolutional autoencoders are basis to extract semantic features due to its property of image generation from low level semantic representations. These representations of images are more effective than simple feature extraction and can preserve better semantic information. Proposed activation and loss functions helped to minimize classification error and produce better hash codes. Most widely used datasets have been used for verification of this approach that outperforms the existing methods.

      • Natural Food Additives and Preservatives for Fish-Paste Products: A Review of the Past, Present, and Future States of Research

Bashir, Khawaja Muhammad Imran,Kim, Jin-Soo,An, Jeong Hyeon,Sohn, Jae Hak,Choi, Jae-Suk Hindawi Limited 2017 Journal of food quality Vol.2017 No.-

<P>Fish-paste products, also known as fish cakes or surimi-based products, are worldwide favorites. Surimi, a wet protein concentrate of fish muscle, is used as an intermediate raw material to produce surimi seafood. The flavor, texture, taste, shelf-life, and market value of surimi-based products depend on the source of the fish meat, type of applied heat treatment, and additives used to prepare the surimi. While preparing surimi with chemical additives, several problems have been observed, such as a lack of unique characteristics, inferior acceptability, and poor functionality. Various types of fish-paste products have been developed by using different ingredients (e.g., vegetables, seafood, herbs and oriental medicines, grains and roots including carrots, and functional food materials). However, a systematic review of fish-paste products prepared using natural food additives has not yet been performed. Therefore, the quality characteristics of fish-paste products and their functionalities were elucidated in this study. With the increasing demand for surimi seafood products, the functional properties, physiochemical properties, and shelf-life of surimi-based products need to be improved. This review will aid the preparation of new value-added products in the surimi industry.</P>

Dengue Virus Serotypes Circulating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, 2013-2015

        Muhammad Suleman,Rani Faryal,Muhammad Masroor Alam,Salmaan Sharif,Shahzad Shaukat,Uzma Bashir Aamir,Adnan Khurshid,Mehar Angez,Massab Umair,Mian Muhammad Sufian,Yasir Arshad,Syed Sohail Zahoor Zaidi 대한진단검사의학회 2017 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.37 No.2

From 2013 to 2015, the National Institute of Health, Pakistan, received 1,270 blood samples of suspected dengue cases reported from inpatient and outpatient departments of various hospitals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province. In this study, we determined the circulating dengue virus (DENV) serotypes using real-time reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR to understand the serotype-based epidemiology of DENV. All four serotypes (DENV-1 [6%], DENV-2 [33%], DENV-3 [47%], and DENV-4 [0.1%]) were found circulating during the study period. Our findings suggest the need for an active surveillance system coupled with the laboratory diagnosis, especially in the chronic endemic areas of the country. Public awareness programs are needed for effective control and prevention of outbreaks in the future.

      • Epidemiology of Prostate Cancer

Bashir, Muhammad Naeem Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.13

Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy among males worldwide, and is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in United States. According to GLOBOCAN (2012), an estimated 1.1 million new cases and 307,000 deaths were reported in 2012. The reasons for the increase of this disease are not known, but increasing life expectancy and modified diagnostic techniques have been suggested as causes. The established risk factors for this disease are advancing age, race, positive family history of prostate cancer and western diet (use of fat items). Several other risk factors, such as obesity, physical activity, sexual activity, smoking and occupation have been also associated with prostate cancer risk, but their roles in prostate cancer etiology remain uncertain. This mini-review aims to provide risk factors, disease knowledge, prevalence and awareness about prostate cancer.
