The Ameliorative Effects of Korean Bean‐Leaves on Inflammation and Liver Injury in Obese Rat Model

Obesity may cause metabolic syndrome and adult diseases. This study was undertaken to investigate the ameliorative or useful effects of beanleaves on inflammation and liver damage in obese rat models. Rats were divided into three groups: a control group (normal diet, n=6), a fat diet group (45%?fat diet, n=7), and a bean leaf group (45%?fat+Korean bean leaves diet, n=7). Body weights in the bean leaf group were lower than those of the fat group (P<0.05). Serum tumor necrosis factor?α (TNF?α) and prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) concentrations were lower in both the control and bean leaf groups than in the fat group (P<0.001). TNF?α concentrations in the bean leaf group were slightly higher than in the control group but statistically significant (P<0.05). The bean leaf group histologically exhibited lower fatty degeneration, spotty necrosis, and leukocyte infiltrations in hepatic tissues than those of the fat group. In the homogenized liver tissues, the cyclooxygenase?2 (COX?2) gene was only expressed in the fat group. The gene expression levels of hepatic TNF?α, inducible nitric?oxide synthase, peroxiome proliferator?activated receptor?α (PPAR?α), poly (ADP?ribose) polymerase (PARP), and transforming growth factor?β1 (TGF?β1) were weaker in the bean leaf group than in the fat group. These results suggest that adding bean?leaves to the diet may ameliorate obesity?induced systemic inflammation and liver damage and that bean leaves may be a useful food for preventing obesity and thereby metabolic syndrome and adult diseases
마늘의 동결건조 과정중 ALLICIN 성분변화에 관한 연구

AlIium속 식물인 마늘을 생것인 상태 및 이들을 통째로, 얇게 썰어서 또는 다져서 동결건조처리에 따른 allicin을 포함한 유용성분의 함량변화와 allinase의 효소활성을 측정한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 시료의 전처리 방법에 따른 allicin과 dially1 disulfide의 함량은 생 것인 상태, 통째로 및 얇게 썰어서 및 다져서 동결건조시킨 순으로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었으며, 다져서 동결건조시킬때 약 35.3%의 allicin감소를 나타내었다. 2. pyruvate 함량을 시료 중량대비로 측정한 결과 생것인 상태보다는 통째로, 얇게 썰어서 및 다져서 동결건조시킨 순으로 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 3. 마늘의 동결건조방법에 따른 allinase 활성을 측정한 결과, 생마늘의 allinase 비활성은 7.422units/mg protein이었으며, 통째로, 다져서 및 얇게 썰어서 동결건조시킨 순으로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 4. 동결건조시간 경과에 따라서 마늘을 통째로, 다져서 및 얇게 썰어서 동결건조시킬때, 수분함량이 감소하고, allinase활성은 감소한 반면에 puruvate의 함량은 증가하였으며, thiosulfinate 함량은 시간경과에 따라서 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in the amount of useful compounds including and in the enzyme activities of alliinase as a result of freeze-drying treatment of garlic in whole, sliced or crushed state. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The amount of allicin and diallyl disulfide was decreased: the degree of decrease was in the order of raw, freeze-dried whole, freeze-dried sliced and freeze-dried crushed. Garlic showed 35.3% allicin decrease almost 100% when they were freeze-dried crushed 2. The amount of pyruvate was increased: the degree of increase was in the same order as above. 3. The activity of allinase was reduced as a result of freeze-drying treatment: the degree of reduction was in the order of whole, crushed and sliced. The activity of allinase in raw garlic was 7.422units/mg protein. 4. When garlic was freeze-dried as whole, crushed or sliced, the amount of water and the activity of allinase decreased while the amount of pyruvate increased as time passed. And the amount of thiosulfinate tends to decrease as time passed.
Pollution risk assessment of oil spill accidents in Garorim Bay of Korea

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study presents a model to assess the oil spill risk in Garorim Bay in Korea, where large-scale oil spill accidents frequently occur. The oil spill risk assessment is carried out by using two factors: 1) The impact probability of the oil spill, and 2) the first impact time of the oil that has been spilt. The risk assessment is conducted for environmentally sensitive areas, such as the coastline and aquaculture farms in the Garorim Bay area. Finally, Garorim Bay is divided into six subareas, and the risks of each subarea are compared with one another to identify the subarea that is most vulnerable to an oil spill accident. These results represent an objective and comprehensive oil spill risk level for a specific region. The prediction of the oil spill spread is based on real-time sea conditions and can be improved by integrating our results, especially when sea conditions are rapidly changing.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A lot of oil spill accidents are around Korean Peninsula. </LI> <LI> Risk assessment is carried out using two factors; Impact probability of oil spill, and first impact time of spilt oil. </LI> <LI> The risk assessment is performed for the environmentally sensitive areas. </LI> <LI> The prediction of oil spill spread based on real-time sea condition has been enhanced through this study. </LI> </UL> </P>

The purpose of This study was to establish an assessment method for the estimation of the pollution risk by oil spill accidents. Various oil spill patterns were calculated based on past accidents in the study area and these result were analyzed statistically. Then the risk probability, the oil arrival time, risk range, and so on were caculated. These calculations were performed for sub-area sectors, fisheries and aquaculture farms, based on information about enviromentally sensitive resources. Finally, the risk to each sub-area sector was assessed by comparing the calculated results. These consequences indicated the objective and general risks of oil spill accidents and the result of this method will be made more appropriate by integrating real time risk predictions.

해양사고 발생시 효율적인 대응을 위한 정보지원시스템을 연구하였다. 미국을 중섬으로 현재 개발되어 운영 중인 해양사고 대옹 지원 정보시스템의 사례를 연구하였으며, 국내 해양사고 발생시 활용할 수 있는 정보시스템의 현황을 검토하였다. 국내외 사례 검토를 통하여 외국 시스템과 국내 시스템의 차이 및 시사점을 분석하였으며, 국내 시스템의 향후 개발방안을 고찰하였다. 또한 국내 해양사고 대응 지원 정보시스 템의 성공적 개발 및 효율적 운영을 위한 기반 구축 및 체제 정비 방안을 제시하였다.
