The effects of injection timing on mixture formation were investigated in direct-injection compressed natural gas powered engines at an idle condition of 700 rpm. The eqiuvalence ratio images close to the injector were acquired at an equivlence ratio of 1.0 by planar laser induced fluorescence technique.<br/> The mixing inside the cylinder appeared to be governed by the fuel jet characteristics during injection and the swirl motion after the injection. The mixture was homogeneous for all cases tested when the time interval between the completion of the injection and the image timing was more than 45 CAD.<br/> For a given injection timing, the cycle-to-cycle variation was about the same for different image timing if the mixture was homogeneous. The effects of the injection timing on mixture formation were more significant in stratified charge cases than in homogeneous charge cases.<br/> <br/>
