Teaching “Applied” Game Design

It is common for student and entertainment game designers to have a prejudice towards serious games, because the goals of a serious game seem to compromise the designer’s ability to design a “fun” game. However, applied game design may present an opportunity for design innovation and design that is “more than fun”. This paper addresses an approach used to educate game designers about serious game design, which combines theory and conceptual design tools to help minimize the complexities of serious game design and maximize the creative freedom of the serious game designer.

Interfacial polymerization (IP) is considered as an emerging technique for fabricating pervaporation (PV)membranes. Typically, PV membranes fabricated through IP achieve high separation efficiency andoverall performance as they possess characteristics that play vital roles in defying the limiting trade-offbetween permeationflux and separation factor. There is a great deal offlexibility in the IP technique. Therefore, this article reviews evolving trends in developing PV membranes fabricated through IP interms of methods of fabrication and modification strategies, active layer and membrane supportselections, and potential industrial applications. Moreover, we also emphasized the free volume analysisof the membranes prepared through IP. Future plans for furthering IP as a fabrication technique for PVmembranes are also explored.
Past and Present Resource Disputes in the South China Sea: The Case of Reed Bank

In 2012, tensions flared between China and the Philippines over plans to drill for oil in the Reed Bank, a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, rekindling fears about the possibility of military conflict over the area’s energy resources. This article shows that international controversy centering on the Reed Bank’s hydrocarbon reserves initially emerged during the oil crisis of the 1970s, when the pursuit of energy resources transformed the islets into a hotly contested area. As in recent years, oil exploration by multinational corporations in conjunction with the Philippines catalyzed international disputes. Vigorous protests from China and other nations that lay claim to territories in the South China Sea prompted the Philippines to assert its own jurisdictional claims. The territorial dispute pushed claimants to the brink of military confrontation in the 1970s, yet armed conflict failed to materialize. By examining the initial round of tensions surrounding oil exploration at Reed Bank, this article situates the current international competition for the South China Sea’s energy resources in historical perspective. Analyzing past disputes and their ultimate resolution offers insights into the dynamics of present tensions, while making it possible to critically engage with arguments predicting future “resource wars” in the South China Sea.
Methodology for the Selection of the Representative Climate Scenario at Yongdam Watershed

The four representative concentration pathways (RCP) scenarios presented in the fifth Assessment Report (AR5) is still widely used by researchers to assess the future effects of climate change in water resources management. However, the lack of providing scientific basis in the selection and application of climate scenarios in numerical models can further increase the uncertainties in the results. Therefore, this study aims to present an analytical and practical methodology for the selection of the representative climate scenario at Yongdam watershed. Based on the findings presented in this study, RCP6.0 scenario best represented the daily minimum temperature at Yongdam watershed for the past decade; the daily precipitation was best represented by RCP4.5 scenario. Furthermore, all four climate scenarios had the tendency to overestimate the magnitude and frequency of precipitation, which is an important factor that should be considered in the selection of climate scenarios. The results and methodology presented in this study can serve as a guideline in the selection of the most applicable climate scenario in other regions.

필리핀의 연평균강수량은 약 965mm ~ 4, 100mm로 수자원이 비교적 풍부하다. 필리핀의 최근 급증하는 도시화로 인해, 필리핀의 마닐라 지역에서는 용수의 수요량이 매년 증가하는 추세이다. 용수의 부족을 해소시키기 위해 필리핀의 풍부한 수자원을 적절하게 사용하여야 하며, 이를 위한 방법 중의 하나로 강우의 유출수를 이 용하는 우수저류시설이 가용하다고 판단된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 마닐라 주거지역에서의 우수저류시설에 대한 잠재가용성을 분석하였으며, 그 방법으로는 일별강우, 유역면적, 유출계수, 인구밀도 그리고 용수수요량 등을 매개변수로 사용하는 물수지방정식을 이용하였다. 세 가지 강우조건(연평균 강우중 최소, 중간, 최대값)과 세 가지 화장실종류(저효율식, 재래식, 절수식)에 따른 가정용수탱크 사용에 대하여 분석하였다. 그리고 대상지역에서의 최적의 강우 저장 면적을 결정하기 위해 월류용적을 사용하였다. 연구결과 세 가지 강우조건에서, 재래식과 절수식 화장실이 우수저류시설에 가장 부합되며, 60m3저류용량의 탱크는 3개월간 90가구의 용수수요를 충분히 공급가능 하다고 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 주거지역의 장기간 용수수요를 충족시키기 위해서는 저류탱크 용량은 1, 100m3~2, 500m3이 적당하다고 판단된다.
