        ‘AI 펭톡’과 영어 원어민의 초등학생 영어 발음평가에 관한 비교연구

        This paper compares the A.I. Pengtalk’s and English native speakers’ assessment of Korean-speaking children’s English pronunciation. For this, 60 sixth-graders participated as assessees and four English native speakers as assessors. The students enunciated 10 English sentences, repeating after Pengtalk, and their speech was recorded. Pengtalk assessed the students’ pronunciation in a three-point scale for overall accuracy and a five-point scale for accuracy of four phonological elements. The native English-speaking assessors listened to and rated the students’ recordings using the rubric offered in Pengtalk. The assessment results were analyzed using t-tests and one-way ANOVA. The findings are as follows. First, Pengtalk tended to rate the students’ overall pronunciation accuracy and their accuracy in the four elements, and across students’ English proficiency levels, significantly lower than the native assessors. Second, Pengtalk and the native assessors differed in the accuracy order of the four elements. Third, variations in the accuracy order according to students’ proficiency levels were greater in Pengtalk than among native assessors. Fourth, Pengtalk’s automatic speech recognition sometimes failed to distinguish English fricatives from stops. Fifth, Pengtalk’s overall pronunciation assessment of a sentence sometimes disconformed with its assessment of the four elements. Based on these results, suggestions are made for developing and using AI chatbot programs from the perspective of English pronunciation teaching.

        How Well Do Elementary School English Textbooks Address Pronunciation?

        This paper investigates how adequately pronunciation aspects are addressed in elementary school English textbooks, specifically focusing on how pronunciation is integrated into lessons and what pronunciation features are focused across the textbooks. This study also explores the extent to which teacher’s manuals provide linguistic and pedagogical information to support English pronunciation teaching. For these, five 3rd and 4th grade textbooks and teacher’s manuals developed according to the 2015 revised national curriculum were surveyed. The results of this study are as follows: Across the textbooks, pronunciation instruction is incorporated into lessons mostly in relation to sound-letter correspondences; pronunciation activities employ a limited repertoire of controlled techniques; the textbooks exhibit unexhaustive and unbalanced coverage of segmental and suprasegmental aspects; they are not effectively designed to teach pronunciation features which pose difficulties for Korean child learners of English; the teacher’s manuals provide neither sufficient and/or accurate linguistic explanations for pronunciation aspects nor principles and techniques for teaching them. Based on these findings, implications for materials development, pronunciation teaching, and teacher training are suggested.

      • 동영상에서의 모델기반 특징추출을 이용한 얼굴 표정인식

        본 논문에서는 ASM(Active Shape Model)과 상태 기반 모델을 사용하여 동영상으로부터 얼굴 표정을 인식하는 방법을 제안한다. ASM을 이용하여 하나의 입력영상에 대한 얼굴요소 특징점들을 정합하고, 그 과정에서 생성되는 모양 파라미터 벡터를 추출한다. 동영상에 대해 추출되는 모양 파라미터 벡터 집합을 세 가지 상태 중 한 가지를 가지는 상태 벡터로 변환하고 분류기를 통해 얼굴의 표정을 인식한다. 분류단계에서는 분류성능을 높이기 위해 새로운 개체 기반 학습 방법을 제안한다. 실험에서는 새로이 제안한 개체 기반 학습 방법이 kNN 분류기보다 더 좋은 인식률을 나타내는 것을 보인다.

        토양 중금속 검사방법 개선에 관한 연구- ICP-AES법에 의한 토양 Cd 분석의 간섭보정 -

        This study was conducted to select the most accurate measurement wavelengths for Cd analysis by examining the cause and extent of interferences in the analytical values for Cd using 183 soil samples, standards, and certified soil samples. In the test for interference effects in Cd standard solution, the accuracies of measurement for the Cd standard solution and the certified reference material (CRM) with high Fe concentration were 116~385% and 110~172% at 226.5 and 214.4 nm, respectively. However, the accuracies at 228.8 ‌ᅠnm were 92~95% and 95~98%, respectively, ‌ᅠwhich satisfied the target value of quality control. In a dilution test for interference correction, when the 0.05 mg/L ‌Cd standard solution was diluted 100 times, interference corrections for Fe and As were observed at 214.4 and 228.8 nm, but not at 226.5 nm. ‌These results suggest that it is necessary to revise the method for soil pollution testing with ICP-AES analysis of soil heavy metals to obtain reliable results by compensating for the disadvantage of the interference effect of Cd. Therefore, Cd wavelengths should be revised to compensate for the shortcomings due to Cd interference effects and obtain reliable analysis results.

        On the Acquisition of English Word Stress by Adult Korean Speakers

          A foreign accent in a second language (L2) may be caused by nonnative-like pronunciation of suprasegmental elements such as stress as well as segmental elements of the L2 phonological system. In the literature of L2 phonological acquisition, however, most studies have focused on the segmental features and only a few studies have investigated the L2 acquisition of suprasegmental elements. This study examines the acquisition of English word stress by adult speakers of Korean in an attempt to see how they learn English stress patterns, particularly if they treat nouns and verbs differently and show sensitivity to the internal syllable structure with respect to stress assignment or if they treat English word stress entirely as a lexical phenomenon. For this, 51 Korean university students were assigned the production and perception tasks in which they were instructed to produce 35 monomorphemic nouns and verbs classified into 7 classes according to stress patterns and listen to them to mark on which syllable they perceived stress to be. It was revealed in this study that although they had no knowledge of stress placement associated with lexical category, vowel weight and the extramatricality of word-final consonants in English, they showed sensitivity to the effect of coda consonants, treating open and closed syllables differently. Based on the results of this research, pedagogical implications are suggested for the teaching of English word stress.

        An Examination of Conceptual Changes through Concept-mapping

        he present study intends to document student teachers’ conceptions about L2 writing and teaching L2 writing to children and to investigate changes in their knowledge before and after an English writing methodology course through concept-mapping. For these, the participants were asked to build a concept map with reference to the focus questions on the first and last day of the course. The participants’ pre- and post-concept maps were examined both quantitatively and qualitatively to measure their conceptual changes as a result of taking the course. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) The participants’ knowledge of L2 writing and teaching L2 writing to children became more differentiated and organized after the course, but the extension and the hierarchical organization of their knowledge were found not to be necessarily positively related; 2) They integrated different concepts and thoughts into their knowledge base, attempting to connect concepts in different domains and to integrate knowledge gained during the course, as shown in the extent of cross-links on the post-concept maps; 3) Along with new organizing concepts and more details, the content of post-maps was different from that of pre-maps in that it was more inclusive and more emphasis was placed on strategies, processes, and procedures of L2 writing and teaching it to children. Based on these findings, implications for teacher education were suggested.

        A Study of Teachers" Feedback on a Primary English Teacher Training Program

        The conceptualization of teacher education should be expanded from a narrowly-based training or educational model towards a broader developmental approach. In this study, a three-stage teacher education session was designed and administered to 30 Korean primary English in-service teachers with a focus on teaching English pronunciation and learning styles in language learning and teaching. The session attempted to help trainees engage in the process of professional development through reflection on their beliefs and teaching practices, provide them with a knowledge base, and increase their abilities to link theory with practice. In this session, reflective practices and loop input techniques, along with other process options, were adopted in order that they would help attain the aims of this study and meet the needs of primary English teachers in Korea Although there were aspects that needed improvement, the trainees" feedback gathered through a questionnaire showed that the three-stage session was effective. The awareness-raising stage helped trainees revisit and reframe their existing beliefs in language learning and teaching. The theoretical background stage provided them with the knowledge and skills on which they build their teaching practices. The learning-by-doing stage helped trainees enhance their abilities to interpret theory and apply it in their teaching practices. Implications for teacher education are suggested based on the findings of this study.

        거대사건(Macro Event) 이론을 통한 현대중국어 습관문 연구

        We analyzed and observed the different types of habitual sentence with Talmy’s Macro-event theory. The conclusion is as below. First, there are three types of habitual sentence: realis event, irrealis event, and realis-irrealis event. Second, the habitual sentence was belonged to four events which are motion event, time contouring event, state change event and realization event on Talmy’s Macro-event. Third, If the habitual sentence was motion event, it appeared in S-Language. If the habitual sentence was state change event, it is showed up in V-Language or a few of S-Language. Moreover, if the habitual sentence was realis event, most of them appeared in S-Language or a few of V-Language. Fourth, our conclusion as above are different from Talmy’s idea which is Chinese is statellite languge. Thus, we claim that the Chinese habitual sentence could appear in both S-Language and V-Language.
