        Numerical analysis of center cracked orthotropic fgm plate: Crack and material axes differ by θo

        In this study, fracture analysis of orthotropic FGM (Functionally Graded Material) plate having center crack is performed, numerically. Material axis arbitrarily oriented and there is an angle θo between material and crack axes. Stress intensity factors at the crack tips for Mode I are calculated using Displacement Correlation Method (DCM). In numerical analysis, effects of material properties and variation of angle θo between material and crack axes on the fracture behavior are investigated for four different boundary conditions. Consequently, it is found that the effect of θo on stress intensity factor depends on variation of material properties.

      • Alveolar ridge expansion-assisted orthodontic space closure in the mandibular posterior region

        Orthodontic closure of old, edentulous spaces in the mandibular posterior region is a major challenge. In this report, we describe a method of orthodontic closure of edentulous spaces in the mandibular posterior region accelerated by piezoelectric decortication and alveolar ridge expansion. Combined piezosurgical and orthodontic treatments were used to close 14- and 15-mm-wide spaces in the mandibular left and right posterior areas, respectively, of a female patient, aged 18 years and 9 months, diagnosed with skeletal Class III malocclusion, hypodontia, and polydiastemas. After the piezoelectric decortication, segmental and full-arch mechanics were applied in the orthodontic phase. Despite some extent of root resorption and anchorage loss, the edentulous spaces were closed, and adequate function and esthetics were regained without further restorative treatment. Alveolar ridge expansion-assisted orthodontic space closure seems to be an effective and relatively less-invasive treatment alternative for edentulous spaces in the mandibular posterior region.

        Combined effects of whole-body vibration and dynamic squats on cardiovascular and salivary biomarker responses in healthy adults

        This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of combining wholebody vibration with dynamic squats on cardiovascular and salivary biomarker responses in healthy adults. A randomized crossover design was conducted with 20 healthy adults. Each participant underwent three exercise sessions, with a 2-week washout period between each session. The sessions consisted of: (1) whole-body vibration (VB) at 25 Hz for 2 minutes, with an amplitude of 2 mm, and 2 minutes of rest between sets, for a total of 5 sets; (2) dynamic squats (SQ) performed 15 times within 2 minutes, with a 2-minute rest between sets, for a total of 5 sets; and (3) a combination of whole-body VB and SQ (VB+SQ). The cardiovascular variables and salivary biomarkers related to exercise intensity were assessed. Only the VB+SQ session significantly decreased the unstimulated salivary flow rate, and caused greater changes in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, rate-pressure product, and heart rate variability compared to VB or SQ alone. Moreover, the VB+SQ session significantly increased the salivary total protein concentration from 0.56±0.05 mg/mL (baseline) to 0.74± 0.06 mg/mL (postexercise condition) and the salivary alpha-amylase activity from 33.83± 5.56 U/mL (baseline) to 63.63± 12.33 U/mL (postexercise condition) (P<0.05). These changes were recovered at 1-hr postexercise condition. Our findings provide information for designing exercise programs that incorporate VB+SQ to enhance hemodynamic and cardiac autonomic responses in healthy adults and for application during rehabilitation periods.

        Assessment of Patient Pain Experience during Intravitreal 27-Gauge Bevacizumab and 30-Gauge Ranibizumab Injection

        Purpose: To compare pain scores of patients during intravitreal 27-gauge bevacizumab and 30-gauge ranibizumab injection procedures. Methods: Seventy eyes of 70 patients who had not previously undergone intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy were included in this study. Thirty-five patients received ranibizumab and 35 patients received bevacizumab. The diagnoses of the patients were: 27 age related macular degeneration, 15 diabetic macular edema, 9 diabetic vitreous hemorrhage, 6 central retinal vein occlusion, 11 branch retinal vein occlusion and 2 central serous chorioretinopathy. Bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 mL) was injected into the vitreous cavity using a 27-gauge needle, and ranibizumab (0.5 mg/0.05 mL) was injected with 30-gauge needle. Patients were asked just after the injection to rate their perceived pain during the injection using the visual analogue scale (VAS) of 0 (no pain) to 10 (unbearable/ worst pain). The average of these scores was used as the primary outcome. Results: The VAS pain scores in the ranibizumab and bevacizumab groups were 1.06 ± 0.91 (range, 0 to 3) and 1.94 ± 1.55 (range, 0 to 7), respectively, a significant difference (p = 0.005). Patients <65 and ≥65 years of age in both the ranibizumab and bevacizumab groups were then compared. For patients <65, there was a significant difference in the average VAS pain scores between groups (p = 0.003). However, for patients ≥65 years, there was not a significant difference in the average VAS pain scores between groups (p = 0.238). Female and male patients in both ranibizumab and bevacizumab groups were also compared. For female patients, there was a significant difference in the average VAS pain scores between groups (p = 0.016), although not for male patients (p = 0.078). Conclusions: Thirty-gauge intravitreal injection is more comfortable than 27-gauge injection. Injection of bevacizumab with 30-gauge needle syringes may be more tolerable for patients.

        An IBC and Certificate Based Hybrid Approach to WiMAX Security

        Worldwide inter-operability for microwave access (WiMAX) is a promising technology that provides high data throughput with low delays for various user types and modes of operation. While much research had been conducted on physical and MAC layers, little attention has been paid to a comprehensive and efficient security solution for WiMAX. We propose a hybrid security solution combining identity-based cryptography (IBC) and certificate based approaches. We provide detailed message exchange steps in order to achieve a complete security that addresses the various kind of threats identified in previous research. While attaining this goal, efficient fusion of both techniques resulted in a 53% bandwidth improvement compared to the standard’s approach, PKMv2. Also, in this hybrid approach, we have clarified the key revocation procedures and key lifetimes. Consequently, to the best of knowledge our approach is the first work that unites the advantages of both techniques for improved security while maintaining the low overhead forWiMAX.

        Hybrid Fuzzy PI-Control Scheme for Quasi Multi-Pulse Interline Power Flow ControllersIncluding the P-Q Decoupling Feature

        Real and reactive power flows on a transmission line interact inherently. This situation degrades power flow controller performance when independent real and reactive power flow regulation is required. In this study, a quasi multi-pulse interline power flow controller (IPFC), consisting of eight six-pulse voltage source converters (VSC) switched at the fundamental frequency is proposed to control real and reactive power flows dynamically on a transmission line in response to a sequence of set-point changes formed by unit-step reference values. It is shown that the proposed hybrid fuzzy-PI commanded IPFC shows better decoupling performance than the parameter optimized PI controllers with analytically calculated feed-forward gains for decoupling. Comparative simulation studies are carried out on a 4-machine 4-bus test power system through a number of case studies. While only the fuzzy inference of the proposed control scheme has been modeled in MATLAB, the power system, converter power circuit, control and calculation blocks have been simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC by interfacing these two packages on-line.

        Ultimate Capacity Prediction of Axially Loaded CFST Short Columns

        Composite columns have superior strength and ductility performance, and they have become more widely accepted in the engineering applications. However, the filled tubular columns require more attention. This study aims to present a new formulation for the axial load carrying capacity ( Nu ) of circular concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) short columns having various geometrical and material properties. Although there have been some empirical relations for predicting Nu in the literature, genetic algorithm based explicit formulation is not available. In the current study, 314 comprehensive experimental data samples presented in the previous studies were examined to prepare a data set for training and testing of the prediction model. The prediction parameters were selected as outer diameter of column (D), wall thickness ( t ), length of column ( L ), compressive strength of concrete ( fc ), and yield strength of steel ( fy ). The prediction model was obtained by means of gene expression programming (GEP). The proposed model was compared with available ones presented in the current design codes (ACI, Australian Standards, AISC, AIJ, Eurocode 4, DL/T, and CISC) and some existing empirical models proposed by researchers. The prediction performance of all models were also evaluated by the statistical parameters. The results indicated that the GEP model was much better than the available formulae, yielding higher correlation coefficient and lower error
