      • Incumbents’ Platformization: The Impact of Organizational Status on Platform Business Model Addition

Vol.2021 No.8

While prior research considerably expanded our understandings of the platform business and its success factors, scant attention has been paid to the cases of incumbents’ strategic change from the product-based strategy to the platform-based strategy. Such a strategic shift by adding the platform-based business model (PBM) may innovate value both beneficial for the firm and its stakeholders, yet it also poses significant number of uncertainties for their constituents. Facing uncertainties, constituents are expected to find signals such as status and reputation. Thus, we examined the effect of a firm’s status on the important strategic change of adding PBM, and the potential contingency of the effect. Exploiting a sample from the Fortune list of Top 500 companies in China, we found that generally high-status incumbents are more likely to add a PBM than the low-status counterparts, which suggesting that status can be seen as assets. Our findings also show that among the low-status firms, in fact, smaller or less-profitable firms are more likely to add PBM while among the high-status firms, larger or profitable firms are more likely to adopt PBM. After PBM addition, however, low-status firms are more likely to increase in performance than their high-status counterparts, thus suggesting that status can meanwhile be seen as a liability. But this liability can be mitigated when incumbents are owned by state or newly public listed. Our research has contributed to our understandings of the social contingency of strategic change and illuminated the needs for revisiting the boundary condition of organizational status as an advantage and a constraint.

Narcissism and Network Brokerage: The Different Effect of Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry in Organizations

Vol.25 No.3

Although some scholars have found that narcissistic individuals tend to be brokers in their social networks, other scholars found no evidence. In this paper, we aim to provide an alternative explanation to the debate by applying the recently developed narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry (NARC) model to the argument. We argue that two dimensions (narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry) of narcissism allow an individual to occupy different network positions (i.e., brokerage vs. closure). We use an online survey to assess employees of a company in China and adopt the socio-centric approach of network analysis to analyze the employee network structures. The results show that whereas high narcissistic admiration individuals tend to exhibit brokerage, high narcissistic rivalry individuals are likely to be embedded in a close network. The negative effect of narcissistic rivalry on brokerage is the strongest when an employee is a newcomer. Our study enhances the understanding of narcissists’ social network structures and contributes to organization research by offering the first step in studying the effect of narcissism in a work setting, where network positions are critical in promoting the individual, team, and even organizational performance.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? The Location Choice of Dual-embedded Entrepreneurs

Vol.26 No.1

Prior studies suggest that entrepreneurs tend to locate where they are strongly embedded in local networks despite less favorable economic factors. Yet entrepreneurs may be embedded in multiple regions and this makes a challenge to the local embeddedness perspective in explaining the location choice of dual-embedded entrepreneurs. Dual-embedded entrepreneurs, who develop strong ties in both home and host countries, can either stay to become foreign entrepreneurs or come back home to become returnee entrepreneurs. Our study attempts to explain the differences in their choices of startup locations. To understand the location choice of dual-embedded entrepreneurs, we employed a mixed-method approach, combining a survey of 55 junior and senior Chinese university students, who are currently studying in Korea, with four in-depth interviews from both foreign entrepreneurs (i.e., Chinese entrepreneurs who started their businesses in Korea), and returnee entrepreneurs (i.e., Those who previously studied in Korea and went back to China to start their businesses). We found that strong ties with host country ethnic group (i.e., Korean community) are positively associated with starting businesses in Korea but that strong ties with home country ethnic group in a host country (i.e., Chinese community in Korea) are negatively associate with the decision to start their businesses in Korea. We also found the complementary effect between two types of strong ties increases the likelihood of starting their businesses in Korea. Moreover, our results suggest the moderating effect of having the host-country ethnic in the prior mentioned relationships. Our study contributes to entrepreneur location choice studies and transnational entrepreneurship research and provides an alternative explanation on why some students going abroad become foreign entrepreneurs and others become returnee entrepreneurs.

Vol.17 No.1

The Effects of Surfactants on the Spinnability, Structure and Properties of Dry-jet Wet Spinning Poly(m-phenylene isophalamide) Fiber

        Qianli Liu,Kaikai Cao,Shikai Qi,You Yang,Shuheng Liang,Huihui Gao,Chen Yang,Dazhe Li,Mengjin Jiang 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.7

The spinnability of semi-dilute poly(m-phenylene isophalamide) (PMIA) spinning dope was regulated by a smallamount of surfactants to make it suitable for dry-jet wet spinning. OP-10 shows the best effect of lowering the surface tensionof PMIA spinning dope among the selected surfactants. The effects of different amounts of OP-10 on surface tension andrheological behavior of PMIA spinning dope were investigated. Results show that when the content of OP-10 reaches0.5 wt.%, the surface tension of the PMIA dope reduces to a minimum. The apparent viscosity of the PMIA dope increaseswith the increment of OP-10 contents. The dynamic viscoelasticity study shows that OP-10 also enhances the elasticity of thePMIA spinning dope. The spinning dope with 0.5 wt.% OP-10 can be smoothly spun by dry-jet wet spinning, and theobtained PMIA filament shows excellent mechanical performance.

      • Effects of Allogeneic Blood Transfusion in Patients with Stage II Colon Cancer

        Meng, Jin,Lu, Xiao-Bo,Tang, Yuan-Xin,Sun, Gong-Ping,Li, Xin,Yan, Yi-Fei,Liang, Gao-Feng,Ma, Si-Ping,Li, Xiao-Xia Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

The aim of the present study was to determine whether allogeneic red blood cell transfusions showed a deleterious effect and what might be preoperative risk factors for blood transfusion in patients with TNM stage II colon cancer. Total 470 patients who fulfilled inclusion criteria were selected for a further 10-year follow-up study. We found that there were statistical significance between non-transfused and transfused group in mortality (P=0.018), local recurrence (P=0.000) and distant metastasis (P=0.040). Local recurrence and distant metastasis between 1 to 3 units and more than 3 units group did not show any significant differences. There was no difference in survival rate between non-transfused and 1 to 3 units group (log rank=0.031, P=0.860). The difference between different blood transfusion volume in transfused patients was found (78.77% vs 63.83%, P=0.006). Meanwhile, the significant difference of survival rate was existed between non-transfused group and more than 3 units group (84.83% vs 63.83%, P=0.002 ). Univariate analysis showed the following 3 variables to be associated with an increased risk of allogeneic blood transfusions: preoperative CEA level (P<0.05), location of tumor (P<0.01) and diameter of tumor (P<0.01). Multivariate analysis revealed that location of tumor and diameter of tumor are two independent factors for requirement of perioperative transfusions. Therefore, allogeneic transfusion increase the postoperative tumor mortality, local recurrence and distant metastasis in patients with stage II colon cancer. The postoperative tumor mortality, local recurrence and distant metastasis were not associated with the blood transfusion volume. The blood transfusion volume was associated with the survival rate. Location of tumor and diameter of tumor were the independent preoperative risk factors for blood transfusion.
