        International Success the Second Time Around

(BTI), a provider of products and services to the electric utility, telecommunications and contractor markets, continues to make progress in exporting. Although export sales only equal 5% of total revenue in 2008, BTI has an entire export division. Their export division’s Managing Director reveals the trial and errors of a privately held company and their quest for success overseas. From its inception, BTI has always believed its greatest asset is its employees. When export sales struggled due to lack of strategy and direction, BTI hired a Managing Director for its export division. With leadership and guidance from BTI’s president and from the Managing Director, they utilized the department’s skills and knowledge. Structural changes were made to expand their market presence abroad and increase export sales. As a result, export sales increased four-fold, area managers in new countries were added and distribution networks were successfully cultivated. At times, revenue generation was difficult to determine due to the structure of the company. Therefore, in 1996, the export division was restructured as a limited liability company. This allowed the company to improve the tracking of revenue and expenses. Originally, 80% of BTI’s export sales came from two countries; therefore, the initial approach to selling overseas was not reaching their anticipated goals of expanding their foreign market presence. However, changes were made and now the company manages the details of selling to over 80 countries. There were three major export expansion challenges noted by the Managing Director: 1. Product and Shipping - The major obstacle for BTI was product assembly. Originally, the majority of the product was assembled in the United States, which increased shipping and packaging costs. With so many parts specified in the order, many times the order would arrive with parts missing. The missing parts could equate to tens of thousands of dollars. Shipping these missing parts separately in another shipment also cost tens of thousands of dollar, plus a delivery delay time of six to eight weeks; all of which came out of the BTI’s pockets. 2. Product Adaptation - Safety and product standards varied widely for each of the 80 countries to which BTI exported. Weights, special licenses, product specification requirements, measurement systems, and truck stability can all differ from country to country and can serve as a type of barrier to entry, making it difficult to adapt products accordingly. Technical and safety standards are barriers that serve as a type of protection for the local industry and can stand in the way of successfully pursuing foreign markets. 3. Marketing Challenges - The importance of distribution creates many challenges for BTI as they attempt to determine how each country prefers to operate with regard to their distribution systems. Some countries have competition from a small competitor that only produces one competing product; whereas BTI manufactures over 100 products. Marketing material is another concern for BTI as they attempt to push marketing costs to the distributors. Adapting the marketing material can be costly in terms of translation and cultural differences. In addition, the size of paper in the United States differs from those in some countries, causing many problems when attempting to copy the same layout and design. With distribution being one of several challenges for BTI, the company claims their distribution network is one of their competitive advantages, as the location and names of their distributors are not revealed. In addition, BTI rotates two offerings yearly: training to their distributors one year and then the next is a distributor’s meeting. With a focus on product and shipping, product adaptation, and marketing challenges, the intricacies of selling overseas takes time and patience.

        Transformation of Japan's Civil Society Landscape

        Japans civil society is being transformed as more people volunteer for advocacy and professional nonprofit organizations. In the American context, this trend has been accompanied by a decline in participation in traditional organizations. Does the rise in new types of nonprofit groups herald a decline of traditional volunteering in Japan? This article argues that while changes in civil rights, political opportunity structure, and technology have also taken place in Japan, they have contributed to the rise of new groups without causing traditional organizations to decline, because Japanese attitudes about civic responsibility have continued to support traditional volunteering.

        Recovering the Sacred in the Church’s Education

        The author asserts that the heart of Christian education is to mediate the grace of God. Thus, she calls Christian educators to recover the sacred and to understand their teaching as a sacramental practice. Reflecting on Luke 8:26-9:17, she describes teaching as a faithful act in which one cannot control the outcomes. Drawing upon personal and congregational narratives of sacramental teaching, she builds upon her recent book on sacramental teaching. She articulates her increasing recognition of the challenges and importance of sacramental educational practices: expecting the unexpected, remembering the dismembered, seeking reversals, giving thanks, nourishing new life, and reconstructing community and repairing the world.

        Break a Leg: An Investigation of L2 Idiom Comprehension of L1 Arabic Speakers

        Previous research into the area of idioms in SLA has focused on the learner’s ability to comprehend idioms in the L2 without delving deeper into the processes by which they decode idioms. Therefore, this study is designed to investigate Arabic learners of L2 English for their comprehension of idioms, with a focus on the strategies they implement to decode idioms. Ten learners of English, five intermediate and five advanced, were recruited and asked to define ten transparent and ten opaque idioms. Results indicated that they all understood transparent idioms better than opaque idioms. Features of each idiom that made the participants’ comprehension challenging are identified and discussed. Also, it was found that advanced and intermediate learners used different cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies (Oxford and Burry-Stock 1995). In particular, advanced learners often used compensation strategies which, with the help of instructors, can be brought to the attention of intermediate learners as well in order to achieve a more effective ability to decode language in the L2. Also, there was an L1 effect as shown in their use of similar descriptive language when attempting to define an idiom they were unfamiliar with. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that teachers showcase particular compensation strategies that are suited to the level of their students and the type of idioms to teach.

      • An Interactive Platform Supporting Peer-to-Peer Live Video Streaming for Synchronous Distance Education

        Video streaming is one of the most successful technologies for sharing of digital information. Highly recognized by many institutions and individuals as a good communication tool and means of sharing information across regions, it is an alternative solution to address the shortcomings of education brought about by the limited time schedule of instructors and the distance aspect between the instructor and the students. In this study, a webbased interactive platform was developed. The aim of the platform is to provide a simple environment which enables the instructor and the students from different locations to interact and share multimedia resources such as live video and audio discussions. The features of the Video Lan Client (VLC) application to utilize itself as a streaming server was used in this study. This allows access to an active stream of a variety of video file types over a network. A routing strategy was developed in such a way that every streaming-capable member can re-transmit the captured streams over one or multiple participants. With this stream and re-streaming approach, client-server bottleneck was avoided and the network load per participant in comparison to a client-server architecture with unicast communications was reduced.

        Curriculum of Homecoming and Pedagogy of Responsibility as the Future of Home Economics Education

        Looking back to the beginnings of home economics and how it has evolved over the years, I suggest that the future of home economics education lies in (a) revisiting the name and initial goals of the profession in conjunction with adopting (b) a curriculum of homecoming (borrowed from Wes Jackson and Wendell Berry) as well as (c) a pedagogy of responsibility, a term used by educational scholars based on the work of Wendell Berry.
