Genetic Distances Among Rice Mutant Genotypes Assessed by AFLP and Aluminum Tolerance-Related Traits

Increasing genetic variability with mutagenic agents has been broadly employed in plant breeding because it has the potential to alter one or more desirable traits. In this study, a molecular analysis assessed by Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms(AFLPs) and a morphological analysis based on seedlings subjected to aluminum stress were compared. Also, an analysis of allelic frequencies was performed to observe unique alleles present in the pool. Genetic distances ranging from 0.448 to 0.953 were observed, suggesting that mutation inducing was effective in generating variability. The genetic distances based on morphological data ranged from 0(genotypes 22 and 23) to 30.38(genotypes 15 and 29). In the analysis of allelic frequency, 13 genotypes presented unique alleles, suggesting that mutation inducing was also targeting unique sites. Mutants with good performance under aluminum stress(9, 15, 18 and 27) did not form the same clusters when morphological and molecular analyses were compared, suggesting that different genomic regions may be responsible for their better performance.

Yeats’s Easter Rising : The Rhetorical Making of a Mask

Yeats’s theory of masks develops at a crucial moment in Irish history—in the year after the 1916 rebellion—in which an antithetical vision of the nation begins to take hold. The Easter Rising presents itself in Per Amica Silentia Lunae as historical subtext that obliges Yeats’s inner need for opposition, and his correspondence with Lady Gregory, Maud Gonne, and others at the time of the Rising both challenges and fortifies his emerging theory of masks. Per Amica is a work that resorts frequently to occult imagery, conceiving of what Herbert Levine calls “collective mind” often in mystical terms, as Anima Mundi or Anima Hominis. But in the year leading up to its publication, Yeats’s inner need for opposition is also manifest rhetorically, in correspondence in which Yeats reaches beyond himself, beyond certain fixed ideas or static preconceptions that he held about events and those involved. In this sense, collective mind is registered for Yeats, always if not ultimately, as a matter of argued perspective.

Acupuncture in Sports Medicine

Acupuncture is gaining popularity and wider acceptance as a treatment modality within the field of sports medicine. Our objective was to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature pertaining to acupuncture in sports medicine to shed light on approaches utilized in acupuncture while revealing its personalized nature and its impact on athletes’ preparation, performance, and recovery. We evaluated acupuncture research in the context of medicine and sports-related injury treatment, assessing its impact on athletic performance across demographics of athletes. Athletes participating in most sports have shown positive outcomes from acupuncture interventions. Acupuncture improves peak oxygen levels, maximum heart rate, delayed-onset muscle soreness, pain, swelling, explosive force production, and joint mobility. Furthermore, the efficacy of acupuncture appears to be similar regardless of age and sex. Lastly, the acceptance of acupuncture is influenced by cultural factors, with Western and traditional East Asian cultures exhibiting distinct perspectives on its rationale and mechanisms of action. Traditional East Asian acupuncturists typically employ qi and meridian theories in their acupuncture practices, with the recent incorporation of Western concepts. Acupuncture shows promise as an effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain and neuropathies in athletes across different age groups and for addressing injuries in various sports. Our comprehensive review will enhance our understanding of acupuncture’s potential as a complementary or distinct therapeutic approach compared to conventional therapies. Additionally, our review explores its specific applications within different sports and delves into the cultural dimensions involved in integrating this practice into modern sports medicine.

EXAMPLES OF NEAR-RING NEUMANN SYSTEMS

In 1940, B. H. Neumann, working with a system more general than a near-field, proved that the additive group of such a system (and of a near-field) is commutative. The algebraic structure he used is known as a Neumann system (N-system). Here, the prime N-systems are classified and for each possible characteristic, examples of N-systems which are neither near-fields nor rings are given. It is also shown that a necessary condition for the set of all odd polynomials over GF(p) to be an N-system is that p is a Fermat prime.
