Proteomic and Phenotypic Analyses of a Putative YggS Family Pyridoxal Phosphate-Dependent Enzyme in Acidovorax citrulli

        Lynn Heo(Lynn Heo),Yongmin Cho(Yongmin Cho),Junhyeok Choi(Junhyeok Choi),Jeongwook Lee(Jeongwook Lee),Yoobin Han(Yoobin Han),Sang-Wook Han(Sang-Wook Han) 한국식물병리학회 2023 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.39 No.3

Acidovorax citrulli (Ac) is a phytopathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) in cucurbit crops, including watermelon. However, there are no effective methods to control this disease. YggS family pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme acts as a coen-zyme in all transamination reactions, but its function in Ac is poorly understood. Therefore, this study uses proteomic and phenotypic analyses to characterize the functions. The Ac strain lacking the YggS family pyri-doxal phosphate-dependent enzyme, AcΔyppAc(EV), virulence was wholly eradicated in geminated seed inoculation and leaf infiltration. AcΔyppAc(EV) propa-gation was inhibited when exposed to L-homoserine but not pyridoxine. Wild-type and mutant growth were comparable in the liquid media but not in the solid media in the minimal condition. The comparative proteomic analysis revealed that YppAc is primarily involved in cell motility and wall/membrane/envelop biogenesis. In addition, AcΔyppAc(EV) reduced biofilm formation and twitching halo production, indicating that YppAc is involved in various cellular mechanisms and possesses pleiotropic effects. Therefore, this identi-fied protein is a potential target for developing an effi-cient anti-virulence reagent to control BFB.

      • Study of A Rakhine Manuscript Deposited in the British Library

2013 Suvannabhumi Vol.5 No.2

Study of A Rakhine Manuscript Deposited in the British Library Zaw Lynn Aung Hinthada University, Myanmar This paper deals with the study of a manuscript on Rakhine history which is deposited today in Oriental and India Office Collection of the British Library as the accession number OR 3465 A. The External Criticism of this manuscript shows that it is a manuscript, which was commissioned Nga Mi to compile by Sir Arthur P. Phayre by making references of the existing Rakhine chronicles in the early colonial period, as Phayre wanted a historical account with an outline of the royal dynasties. The Internal Criticism reveals that the compiler Nga Mi did not invent the writing of his own but drawn the sources from various Rakhine chronicles in compiling his work. And Sir Arthur Phayre who used this Nga Mi Chronicle or OR 3465 A as the chief source in writing Rakhine history. He did not analyse the mythical, supernatural and improbable elements in Nga Mi Rakhine Razawin. Phayre did not problematicize any historical issue from Nga Mi Chronicle. One of the outstanding examples of the legend of King Min Saw Mon is discussed in this paper. As Arthur Phayre took this account from Nga Mi Chronicle and framed the story into a convincing narrative in his “History of Burma”, the scholars after Phayre have continued to present the legend as a historical fact.

Vol.5 No.1

      • KFS-P12 : Understanding Participatory Forest Management for Sustainable Forest Management

Vol.2014 No.-

A review of literature on Participatory Forest Management (PFM) with focus on the planning stage in developed countries was conducted. This was done to have an overview on PFM. Participation in forest management in other countries, in the United States in particular, is mandatory as provided for in forest laws. The reasons for implementing PFM are varied, and the same is true for the approaches or techniques, though no particular approach could be labeled to be the best in all situations. The implementation of PFM is also complicated. There are a number of problems which were enumeration in various papers on participatory management, the more evident problems are: identifying the public; priorities and conflicts; decision-making power determination; and statutory drawbacks. Suggested precautionary activities to minimize if not to totally prevent problems in the implementation of PFM are: definition of who will be the ``public`` or ``participants`` including the process of identifying them; making the ``public`` aware of the objective of the activity: whether it will just be an information dissemination activity, will their inputs be needed, or will they be given a certain degree of power during decision-making; and determine what weight will be accorded to their opinions during the actual decision-making process.

From Human Capital to Lifelong Learning

Vol.16 No.3

OECD’s growing emphasis on the importance of lifelong learning represents a sometimes uncomfortable validation of the field of Lifelong Education. But this emphasis comes not from a view that Lifelong Education needs to adapt, but rather than neo‐classical thinking in Economics has failed to capture human potential. The change in OECD thinking follows two decades of substantial changes in thinking within the subfield of Economic Development. This article traces the evolution of thinking in this subfield from its roots in Human Capital theory, through the acceptance of competitive advantage conceptions of development and on to the profound changes that followed. The result is a view of social progress that embraces human agency, collaborative learning, social values and environmental sustainability. The implications for Lifelong Education are substantial. The changes imply that leadership in the Lifelong Education approach will be needed and incorporation of the values within the field is becoming incorporated in mainstream education and economic arenas.

'Looking into' chemical products and processes

        Lynn F. Gladden,C. Buckley,P. S. Chow,J. F. Davidson,M. D. Mantle,J. Sederman 한국물리학회 2004 Current Applied Physics Vol.4 No.2-4

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has long been established as a probe of the.A- and nm-scale chemistry and dynamics ofmolecules in the solid, glassy, gel, liquid and gas states. In the medical eld, the use of magnetic resonance imaging is now routineand will be found in most hospitals as a probe of the internal structure and blood ow within the human body. By bringing these two.families’ of magnetic resonance (MR) techniques together we have a powerful new set of tools with which to understand thefundamental physical and chemical processes that underpin our ability to formulate and manufacture materials with well-denedproperties. This article summarises some of the state-of-the-art developments and applications of MR techniques with particularapplication to obtaining new insights and strategies for controlling product properties through chemical process design. The use ofultra-fast MR techniques to study unsteady state multi-phase, multi-component processes is identied as oering exciting oppor-tunities in controlling properties during materials synthesis and subsequent processing.

How Home Country’s Development Can Work against Its Best and Brightest: The Case of Korean Electronics Industry

Lynn Pyun 한국APEC학회 2021 Journal of APEC Studies Vol.13 No.2

In economic development, high-skilled migration has been at the forefront of scholarly discourse. Despite the interest, what is still missing in the discussion is the impact that home-country institutions play when foreign-educated elites return to home country. To fill this gap, we employ a case-study method to analyze the careers of South Korean engineering PhDs who studied at U.S. universities. The conventional wisdom in economic development literature is that a home-country’s development reaching a level to attract back overseas talent would count as an unequivocal success. However, what we found is that the benefit of job-creation by home-country institutions is uneven across the population, and may possibly have a surprisingly unintentional detrimental effect in the case of top talents. A concrete lesson here is that creating institutions that encourage the maximum knowledge output from the nation’s the best and the brightest is extremely difficult. This research aims to serve as a cautionary tale to the policymakers, academics and managers in the APEC region, as many nations are attempting to replicate Korea’s success in knowledge sectors.
