Implementing United Nations Resolutions regarding Maritime Feature Names

Vol.8 No.2

This paper explores the implementation of United Nations resolutions as they apply to the international standardization of maritime feature names. It looks at the role of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) and other scientists in recognizing problems that remain with the implementing of some of these resolutions. Proposals for a new approach are put forward to encourage more of the successes already achieved. This may entail engaging scientists recruited from the natural and social sciences into the existing geographical and linguistic divisions and working groups of the UNGEGN who deal with the formulation of such resolutions. Additionally, to revitalize a new working group focusing exclusively on maritime feature names. Such a task team drawn from divisions and groups, or any other structure necessary, may supplement thework of the experts. These newly formed structures should be supported to continue their valuable work between sessions and conferences of the UN to concentrate on drafting new resolutions to circumvent stalemates that exist on the standardization of maritime names in dispute, and to share their valuable knowledge on maritime names with the international community through publications and other media outputs.

“Métissages” in the Ardennes: Reflexions on the Conditions of Possibility of Authentic Encounters

2023 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.14 No.1

The “Métissages” project concerns encounters around artistic workshops between people from different backgrounds: young people, pensioners, asylum seekers, artists, social workers, neighbors in the Ardennes, a rural part of Belgium. The author shares her point of views on what makes an encounter possible, on the obstacles that hinder authentic encounters, and on what is at stake in the most improbable of encounters. The author questions the role of art and of art-facilitators in the face of the challenges of our modern world.

      • A Philosophical Walk with Teenagers

Vol.9 No.-

This article reflects on a philosophical walk with teenagers. It relates how they adapted the exercise to the needs of their age group, and to the way they find themselves in the world. We reflect on what this manifests about teenagers relationship to representations and to communication by memes. We conclude by suggesting ways in which philosophical practitioners can adapt their ways of working with the public, in a world which has moved away from the oral traditions and away from the written words, and towards fast moving images and short attention span communication by memes.

Nanoparticles Based on Poly(trimethylene carbonate) Triblock Copolymers with Post-Crystallization Ability and Their Degradation in vitro

        Lucie Reinišová,Filip Novotný,Martin Pumera,Katarína Kološtová,Soňa Hermanová 한국고분자학회 2018 Macromolecular Research Vol.26 No.11

Aliphatic polycarbonate-based block copolymers have received considerable attention as carriers for targeted drug and gene delivery because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, there is little understanding of their phase behaviour and physicochemical characterization of the particles made from them. Here, we prepared a series of well-defined poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC)- based copolymers with molar masses of 3-9 kg·mol-1 by metal-free ring-opening polymerization using dihydroxy-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) as a macroinitiator. Micellar nanoparticles self-assembled from copolymers had a size of less than 130 nm. They were degraded by the action of a model lipase from Mucor Miehei at 37 °C, which is of high importance for biodegradability in the living organism. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry proved that amorphous copolymers with more than 39 mol% of carbonate units and representative particles were prone to the rearrangement of PTMC chains during storage and to thus undergo post-crystallization. Our findings can contribute to the comprehensive characterization of polycarbonate biomaterials for medical applications.

Floristic diversity and exploitable potential of commercial timber species in the Cobaba community forest in Eastern Cameroon: implications for forest management

Lucie Felicite Temgoua,Marie Caroline Momo Solefack,Princely Awazi Nyong,Patrick Tadjo 한국산림과학회 2020 Forest Science And Technology Vol.16 No.2

One of the forms of forest management is community forestry which is as an alternative to state-managed conservation. Knowledge of the wood potential and exploitable species is a prerequisite for the sustainable management of a community forest. This study carried out in the Cobaba community forest in Eastern Cameroon aimed to assess the floristic diversity and exploitable potential of timber species. A floristic inventory at a sampling rate of 8% was carried out and the volume of trees having reached the minimum exploitable diameter estimated. A total of 7736 commercial trees with dbh 20 cm were recorded, belonging to 65 species, 58 genera and 26 families. The Shannon–Weaver diversity index (H0 ) was 3.61. The density was 42.04 stems ha-1 and the basal area 16.43 m2 ha1 . A volume of timber of 31,929.21 m3 has been estimated for trees having reached the minimum exploitable diameter. About 30% of this volume is made up of high and medium commercial value species for which market demand exists. The most abundant species of high commercial value were Triplochyton scleroxylon, Entandrophragma cylindricum, and Milicia excelsa. For sustainable management and species conservation, we recommend that species with very low densities should be excluded from logging and for each species exploited, some well-conformed seed trees with a diameter greater than the minimum exploitable diameter should be left to ensure the renewal of the wood resource.

      • Sport and Leisure: Bright Light or Dark Force

Vol.2016 No.1

Sport and leisure have the power to unite, to be inclusive, to spread constructive lessons for its participants, and to be a positive force in people’s lives. Several studies demonstrate how sport and leisure play an important function in the physical, psychological, social, and healthy development of children and youth, adults, older adults, and special populations (cf. Allender, Cowburn, & Foster, 2006; Fraser-Thomas, Cote, & Deakin, 2005; Janssen & LeBlanc, 2010; Nelson et al., 2007; Tudor-Locke et al., 2011). As such, sport and leisure can be a ‘bright light’ for many participants. It is important to remember however, that sport and leisure can also divide, exclude, and represent negative experiences for some participants. For my presentation, I address the challenges facing sport and leisure and I underscore the need for greater consideration of the importance for us all, as leaders, to be great stewards of sport and leisure. In the context of this presentation, the term ‘steward’ is defined as a person (or persons) or agency (or agencies) assigned to serve and protect the best interests of sport and leisure; in other words, the keeper or guardian of sport and leisure to ensure that sport and leisure remain positive for all of its participants and for society in general. Examples of sport as a ‘dark force’ include: drugs, doping, and cheating in sport; corruption and match fixing; hooliganism and spectator violence; questionable decisions favouring personal profits; and commercial interests taking precedence over athletes’ and participants’ welfare. We have also recently witnessed several high profile athletes and sport team members who have been featured in the media because they took part in immoral and/or illegal activities. Examples include Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi, Lance Armstrong, Maria Sharapova, Oscar Pistorius, and the more than 40 football players who were banned for life from the K-League and the Korean Football Association for match fixing issues in 2011 (Kelso, 2013). It is not only athletes who are involved in illegal, immoral, and corrupt activities in sport. Leaders, coaches, and officials have also been active in questionable practices leading to the decay of international sport, for example, Sepp Blatter and a number of his peers through Federation Internationale de Football Association’s bidding process; Union Cycliste Internationale’s role in concealing doping scandal of their star athlete, Lance Armstrong; Russian doping officials ensuring ‘clean’ doping results of their athletes by substituting samples through deceitful practices; and a recent case involving K-League referees occurred in the Fall of 2015 where past president from Gyeongnam FC, Ahn Jong-Buk, allegedly paid referees to ensure favourable outcomes for the team (Reuters, 2015). There are so many more cases in sport . it is surprising the extent to which leaders within sport and leisure organizations are facing questionable practices, unethical behaviours, and illegal activities. We do not have to simply rely on the headlines from sport news to understand that there are also other issues in sport and leisure that are ‘closer’ to home. Local community sport and leisure are sometimes rife with problems, for example, increasing costs and fees of participating in sport and leisure activities; limited active play time on the field; non-transparent/biased team selection process; abuse of athletes and participants by some coaches, officials, and administrators; parental pressure; early specialization; and the endangerment of athletes’ and participants’ health (e.g., concussions, overuse injuries, eating disorder). With the overwhelming cases showcasing ‘dark forces’ in sport, how can we, as stewards, make sure sport and leisure remain positive, constructive, inclusive, and beneficial for all? What solutions can we propose to cure sport and leisure of issues and problems? These are difficult questions to answer and even more difficult problems to solve but as stewards of sport and leisure, we have a responsibility to train students (our future leaders) to fully understanding ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly’ of sport and leisure and to emphasize the need to protect sport and leisure as the ‘bright light’ for all participants. Working with all stakeholders in sport and leisure including athletes and participants is essential to address the issues. Involving athletes and participants in the decisions and in the policies that directly affect the quality of their participation in sport and leisure may certainly contribute to enhance their experiences.

The Upper Esophageal Sphincter Distensibility Index Measured Using Functional Lumen Imaging Probe Identifies Defective Barrier Function of the Upper Esophageal Sphincter

        Lucie F Calderon,Meredith Kline,Marc Hersh,Kevin P Shah,Suprateek Kundu,Andrew Tkaczuk,Nancy McColloch,Anand S Jain 대한소화기 기능성질환·운동학회 2022 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.28 No.3

Background/AimsThe mechanism via which supra-esophageal symptoms are generated is unclear. We assessed upper esophageal sphincter (UES) function in novel fashion using functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) topography. We hypothesize that symptoms related to aspiration of esophageal contents may be associated with a more distensible UES. MethodsFLIP and reflux symptom index score data from patients undergoing diagnostic evaluation for an esophageal complaint over a 10-month period were analyzed retrospectively. UES distensibility on FLIP was studied at 40-70 mL volumes with in-depth analysis at 50 and 60 mL. Symptoms were compared between patients with low, middle, and high UES-distensibility index (UES-DI). Receiver-operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine associations between the UES-DI and individual reflux symptom index symptom item scores. ResultsOne hundred and eleven subjects were included. Overall, the associations between UES-DI and symptoms that could be related to supra-esophageal aspiration were strongest at the 50 mL FLIP volume. Choking item score was highest in the high UES-DI group (2.8) vs 1.4 (P < 0.001) in the middle UES-DI and 1.1 (P = 0.004) in the low UES-DI groups. Similarly, the cough item score was highest in the high UES-DI group (2.7) vs 1.5 (P = 0.009) and 0.9 (P = 0.002) groups. ConclusionA higher UES-DI measures defective barrier function which could may be the main pathophysiology that generates supra-esophageal symptoms.

      • Creation of Meaning

2012 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.3 No.-

This article is about a Socratic dialogue on happiness and meaning presented at the ICPP in Chuncheon. However, the article is in the form of an inner Socratic dialogue with myself. So, it starts with an exemplification of a search for happiness and meaning: a personal narrative. Some sections are introducing content: the Socratic methodology, the exercises given to the participants, while other sections are meta-level comments on those contents and on my performance as a facilitator: on the order of exposition, on the introduction to the workshop. The conclusion/ evaluation centers on the belief in the value of rationality, objective truth and dialogue, at the root of the Socratic methodology. This is contrasted with the subjectivist, relativist conceptions of truth, frequently encountered in some varieties of coaching. Guru-style coaches are the new Sophists.
