Purpose: Cancer cells develop acquired resistance induced by chemotherapeutic drugs. In this study, we investigated the effects of brief treatment with cytotoxic drugs on the phenotype of breast cancer cells. Methods: Breast cancer cells MCF7 and BT-474 were briefly treated with paclitaxel or doxorubicin. Clonogenic, migration, and invasion assays were performed on the treated cells. Western blot analysis and RhoA activity assay were also performed. Results: Breast cancer cells when briefly treated with paclitaxel or doxorubicin showed reduced clonogenic ability. Doxorubicin, but not paclitaxel, augmented cell migration and invasion. The invasion-promoting effects of doxorubicin were lost when the two drugs were sequentially used in combination. Myosin light chain (MLC) 2 phosphorylation and RhoA activity were upregulated by doxorubicin and downregulated by paclitaxel. Pretreatment with RhoA inhibitors abolished the migration- and invasion-promoting effects of doxorubicin. Conclusion: Doxorubicin activates the RhoA/MLC pathway and enhances breast cancer cell migration and invasion. Therefore, this pathway might be explored as a therapeutic target to suppress anthracycline-enhanced tumor progression.

<P>We explored a very interesting gold nanoparticle system—pegylated gold in colloidal solution—and analyzed its uptake by mice colorectal adenocarcinoma CT26 tumor cells and the impact on the cell’s response to x-ray irradiation. We found that exposure to polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified (‘pegylated’) 4.7 ± 2.6 nm gold nanoparticles synthesized by a novel synchrotron-based method enhances the response of CT26 cells to x-ray irradiation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal microscopy revealed that substantial amounts of such nanoparticles are taken up and absorbed by the cells and this conclusion is supported by quantitative induced coupled plasma (ICP) results. Standard tests indicated that the internalized particles are highly biocompatible but strongly enhance the cell damage induced by x-ray irradiation. Synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectromicroscopy analyzed the chemical aspects of this phenomenon: the appearance of C = O stretching bond spectral features could be used as a marker for cell damage and confirmed the enhancement of the radiation-induced toxicity for cells.</P>

Objective: The aim of the current study was to evaluate changes in treatment outcomes in terms of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and symptom burden at zero, one, three, and six months after an initial diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The demographic and clinical characteristics that account for outcome changes in patients were investigated using a repeated measures framework. Methods and Materials: A cohort study was performed of 134 colorectal cancer patients followed from diagnosis to 6 months post-treatment in Central Taiwan. HRQoL and symptoms were assessed at diagnosis and one, three, and six months thereafter. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colon (FACT-C) questionnaire, VAS pain, and the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS) were used for data collection. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was applied for statistical analysis. Results: The majority of the patients were male (55%) and married (91.5%). The mean age was 60.4 years (SD = 11.71). Most were diagnosed stage III and IV colorectal cancer (54.5%). All underwent surgery; some also received chemotherapy (CT) or concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT). The results of the GEE showed that overall, the HRQoL, pain, and symptoms of the patients significantly improved over the treatment period. Patients with stage IV disease who had received surgery and CCRT showed the worst HRQoL. Females, patients with comorbidity, and stage IV patients had higher pain scores over time. Female and stage IV patients had more severe physical symptoms, whereas stage II and IV patients had worse psychological symptoms over time. Conclusion: The patients' HRQoL, pain, and symptoms significantly improved over the 6-month treatment period. Certain patient and clinical variables accounted for changes in treatment outcomes regarding HRQoL and symptom burden in colorectal cancer patients.
Low Gate Leakage Current HFET Structure Fabricated by Using a Step-free Airbridge Gate Process

Conventional heterostructure field-effect transistors (HFETs) have a high gate leakage current due to the gate electrode being in contact with the exposed channel layer and with the carrier-providing layer on the mesa sidewall. In this study, we use a new step-free (SF) air-bridge gate structure to reduce the gate leakage and improve the breakdown voltage. The proposed structure does not increase any MASKs as compared with the conventional process. In addition, this new structure promises a gate-source capacitance smaller than those of conventional heterostructure FET devices. Consequently, the high-frequency performance of the HFETs using the proposed structure can be improved.

Liquid crystal alignment on inkjet printed and air-buffed polyimide with nano-grove surface

<P>We have found that liquid crystal (LC) can be aligned on an inkjet printed and air-buffed polyimide (PI) surface. Surface anisotropy is introduced by inkjet printing and air blowing from a PI ink cartridge and an empty cartridge of an inkjet printer, respectively. LC molecules align on the PI surfaces with the nano-scale grooves, which are validated with atomic force microscope images. The pretilt angles of the LCs could be varied from 0° to 90°, by controlling the composition of a mixture of homogeneous and homeotropic PIs.</P>

The dielectric properties and various pattern-forming states of dual-frequency material in a nematic phase, as well as its mixture containing low concentrations of reactive monomers, are reported. The dielectric relaxation behaviors of nematic MLC 2048 are presented and compared to its mixture containing both mesogenic and nonmesogenic reactive monomers. The sign-inversion frequency of the dielectric anisotropy was significantly shifted on the addition of small amounts of the reactive monomers. However, all three mixtures used in this study essentially exhibited the same field-induced instabilities at different frequencies and voltage domains of the applied electric field. A broad band of modulated states were found to exist above a critical voltage and within a voltage dependent frequency band in the vicinity of the sign-inversion frequency, $f_I$, of the dielectric anisotropy. As the $f_I$ of the mixtures shifted, so did the bands of the modulated state of the different mixtures and the temperatures, which were well matched with the measured $f_I$ value.
