        Background and Objectives : Cigarette smoking is a major factor and the most modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction is an early event in atherosclerosis, before the structural change of the systemic arteries. We hypothesized that endothelial dysfunction might be present in the systemic arteries of young adult smokers and that this might be dose-dependent phenomenon. Therefore, we try to certify that smoking is associated with endothelial dysfunction in healthy young adults without other risk factor of atherosclerosis. Subjects and Methods : we studied noninvasively 29 subjects aged 3 to 4 decades without other risk factor of atherosclerosis, they were composed of the two groups, current smokers(n=15) and nonsmokers(n=14). Smoking history varied from 3 to 20 pack years. Using high-resolution ultrasound, vessel diameter and mean flow rate were measured at rest, during reactive hyperemia(with flow-mediated endothelium-dependent dilation), and after sublingual nitroglycerin(NG-induced endothelium-independent vasodilation). Result : Flow mediated endothelium dependent dilation was observed in the control subjects (9.4±3.44%) but was impaired in the smokers(5.8±2.51%)(p=0.004). NG-induced endothelium independent dilation is no difference in all subjects. Conclusion : Cigarette smoking is associated with endothelial dysfunction in healthy young adults.

      • Comparison of trophic factors changes in the hippocampal CA1 region between the young and adult gerbil induced by transient cerebral ischemia.

        <P>In the present study, we investigated neuronal death/damage in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 region (CA1) and compared changes in some trophic factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), in the CA1 between the adult and young gerbils after 5 min of transient cerebral ischemia. Most of pyramidal neurons (89%) were damaged 4 days after ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) in the adult; however, in the young, about 59% of pyramidal neurons were damaged 7 days after I-R. The immunoreactivity and levels of BDNF and VEGF, not GDNF, in the CA1 of the normal young were lower than those in the normal adult. Four days after I-R in the adult group, the immunoreactivity and levels of BDNF and VEGF were distinctively decreased, and the immunoreactivity and level of GDNF were increased. However, in the young group, all of their immunoreactivities and levels were much higher than those in the normal young group. From 7 days after I-R, all the immunoreactivities and levels were apparently decreased compared to those of the normal adult and young. In brief, we confirmed our recent finding: more delayed and less neuronal death occurred in the young following I-R, and we newly found that the immunoreactivities of trophic factors, such as BDNF, GDNF, and VEGF, in the stratum pyramidale of the CA1 in the young gerbil were much higher than those in the adult gerbil 4 days after transient cerebral ischemia.</P>

        The substitution products of thioglycolic acid to the derivatives of 1-chloro-1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-e-cyano ethene synthesized 1-Chloro-1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene [Ⅴ], 1-chloro-10(4-chlorophenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene[Ⅳ] and 1-chloro-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene[Ⅶ] undergo substitution reactions with thioglycolic acid to form s-[(1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-2-cyano) ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid s-[(1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-carboethoxy-e-cyano] ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid and s-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyano] ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid, respectively. The structure of products were identified by elemental analysis, potentiometric titration, infrared and nmr spectra.

        太子蔘의 造血作用에 對한 實驗的 硏究

        In order to investigate the hematopoietic effects of Pseudostellariae Radix various experiment about hematopoiesis were studied. The results were obtained as follows: 1. In the proliferous effect of bone marrow cells, water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix played an important role on the proliferating bone marrow cells compared with control group. 2. The water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix activated the bone marrow cells. 3. The water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix promoted the proliferation of the bone marrow cells into cluster, BFU-E, CFU-GEMM. 4. In the bone marrow cells treated with CTX, the water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix promoted the SCF, EPO, IL-4, IL-6 gene expression, but gene expression of its receptors, c-kit, EPO-R, TPO, c-mpl, EKLF, GATA-1 were not promoted significantly. According to the above results, water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix promoted not only the differentiation of the bone marrow cells into CFU-GEMM which mother cell of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, monocytes and macrophages, but also the differentiation of the bone marrow cells into BFU-E. On the other hand, in the gene expression that have a lot of hematopoietic effects in the early differentiation of haematopoietic stem cells by promoting the gene expression of SCF, EPO, IL-4, IL-6 and so forth. Above results also demonstrates that the water extracts of Pseudostellariae Radix have somewhat meaningful effects in hematogenesis but not sufficient to explain its mechanisms about hematogenesis, therefore further deep studies should be accomplished about its mechanisms.

      • 안양시 유치원 교육환경의 실태와 발전 방향 : The Actual Conditions and the Directions for Improvement

        Abstract Although environmental factors are important in all stages of education, those factors play more significant roles in the field of early childhood education than in any other school settings in that young children grow and develop rapidly and they are very sensitive to environmental elements. Consequently, it is essential to prepare appropriate educational environments for young children in order to maximize the effect of educational efforts. The environment of a kindergarten can be divided into personal environments and physical environments. Personal environments include parents, teachers, peer groups, and other people in the community. On the other hand, physical environments include the site of a school, school buildings, playgrounds, books, and several kinds of educational facilities and materials.The purpose of this study was to analyze the actual conditions of educational environment of kindergartens in Anyang city and to propose the directions for improving the environment. For this purpose, this study reviewed the significance of educational environment of kindergarten and the history of early childhood education in Anyang. In addition, the information on actual conditions of educational environment of kindergartens was collected using a series of questionnaire and the collected data were examined on the basis of the following categories: 1) Curriculum planning and program implementation 2) Educational facilities and teaching materials 3) Heads and teachersThe results of data analysis revealed that, in general, actual conditions of educational environment of kindergartens in Anyang city were appropriate. However, several problems to be solved were also found. Based on the results of the study, following suggestions can be made for improving educational environment of kindergartens in Anyang city: 1) First of all, heads/managers and teachers in the kindergarten should have strong attitudes and make efforts to solve the environmental problems pointed out in this study. 2) In addition, it is necessary to establish an effective corporation system among educational administrative authorities, schools, and other organizations of social education. 3) In parallel with the above, the government should provide not only strict administrative controls but also proper supports to the field of early childhood education for maintaining and improving the quality of educational environment. It seems that these suggestions are consistent with Anyang city's policy to make this city as “a city of hope in the 21th century, the period of localization” and minimum requirements for preparing the implement of kindergarten education as a stage of public education.

        운동성 산화 스트레스와 항산화비타민의 보충이 말초단핵세포의 NF-kB 활성에 미치는 영향

        Reactive oxygen species(ROS) are implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of human diseases. Numerous studies indicate that ROS may serve as common intracellular molecules that contribute to the process of nuclear factor(NF)κB activation in response to a diverse stimuli. In our laboratory, we have demonstrated tat antioxidants could reverse the decline of immune function caused by exercise-induced ROS. Furthermore, it in necessary to understand a mechanism underlying ROS-dependent disorder in biological system. Recent studies have been shown that several gene expression were regulated by oxidants, antioxidants and other determinants of the intracellular reduction-oxidation(redox) state. In this process, NF-κB have been shown to play a important role. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of exercise-induced oxidative stress and antioxidnt supplementation on NF-κB activation in peripheral mononuclear cells. Forty male SD rats(4 weeks old) were randomly divided into noraml diet group and antioxidants(ATO) supplement group, and then ATO groups were treated with antioxidants(VE: 2001U/kg, VC: 50mg/rat, β-carotene: 300mg/kg, vitamin B6: 250㎍/100g, selenomethionine: 0.1mg/kg) for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks breeding at each condition, each group divided into two groups: Control group(CR) fed generally, Exercise group(CE) fed generally and followed by acute exercise 16 weeks later. Antioxidant Antioxidants and Exercise group(AE) fed with antioxidants and followed by acute exercise. The activation of NF-κB binding activity was increased after exhaustive exercise bout in both group. In addition, pretreatment of ATO group with the antioxidants mixture lead to the inhibition of NF-κB binding activity. This results suggest that NF-κB activation should be further studies in response to a variety of exercise.

        蒼耳子의 IC - 2 細胞에 대한 抗알러지 效果에 關한 硏究 ( 2 )

        This study was carried out for the purpose of knowing the effect from anti-allergic action of B cells and the IC-2 mast cells the extraction from Xanthii Fructus(EXF). In order to know the effect of the cytotoxicity from extraction of Xanthii Fructus, we had to examine the safe density of EXF on lung fibroblast cells of the mouse (mLPCs). We also attempted to resolve the relationship cytotoxicity. The effect was on the organization of cytokine gene expression from the increas and divorce of the B cells and allergic acting by EXF, we found it necessary to examine the IC-2 cells and B cells. We examined the histamine release of IC-2 cells by ELISA method, we also examined the effect of EXF on the increase and divorce of the B cells by ^3H-thymidine uptake method. We then analyzed the release of IL-4, IgE and nitric oxide (NO). The results are as follows : 1. EXF did not show cytotoxicity against mLFCs. 2. According to the inspection on the effect on IC-2 cells gene expression by EXF, we found out the following results: EXF reduced IL-4, IL-6, GM-CSF, TNF-α gene expression and histamine release of IC-2 cells. The EXF inhibited signs of inflammation IC-2 cells.

        The combustor, diffuser and nozzle are main components of the ramjet engine. The objective of this study is thermo structure analysis of the combustor. The combustor is composed of 17-4 PH stainless steel housing and Inconel 718 liner. Temperature conditions of housing and liner are quite different. The combustor liner is rapidly heated up to 700℃, so that is reached plastic zone locally. The temperature of combustor housing rises to 400℃. The thermal stress of liner is large than housing stress. The nonlinear thermal analysis with mechanical properties of both housing steel and liner inconel such as Young’s modulus, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity is conducted. The analysis of the transient temperature and thermal stress of combustor is carried out the finite element method with code Nastran. The structural assessment of combustor is evaluated.

      • 서울의 PPNG 발생 빈도(1991-1992)

        The prevalence of PPNG among pretreated gonorrhea cases isolated at the STD clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul has been studied and reported annually since 1981. In 1991, 123 strains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 58(47.1%) were PPNG. In 1992, 98 starains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 51(52.0%) were PPNG. In all, 109(49.3%) strains were found to be PPNG among 221 strains isolated between 1991-1992. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul showed increased tendency till 1989, thereafter, it has been stationary or slightly decreasing.
