Column experiments were performed to investigate the influence of ionic strength on the attachment and detachment of Staphylococcus aureus to quartz sand and iron-coated sand. Experimental results showed that the mass recovery in quartz sand decreased with increasing ionic strength and bacteria detachment was occurred when ionic strength was changed. In the coated sand, however, the mass recovery remained constant even though ionic strength was changed. Also, no detachment occurred with ionic strength change.

Interface IC design for heart beat measurement sensor is proposed and executed by using current control schmitt trigger. The function of interface IC is to measure the heart beat using PPG from sensor. This circuit is composed of analog circuit that converts current signal of sensor to voltage and digital circuit that converts it to digital value. Applying OTA to schmitt trigger and oscillator, operation speed is faster and linear error is smaller than the conventional one. Besides, follow features such as low power consumption, simple configuration and high resolution, are realized by IC design.

Accurate anatomical reduction, rigid internal fixation and early mobilization are essential for good prognosis especially in the intraarticular fractures. Fractures of the calcaneus involving the subtalar joint have controversy for treatment method because of the anatomical complexity and hence difficulty of accurate reduction and rigid internal fixation. We analyzed 26 cases (15 males, 6 females) of the calcaneal fractures involving the subtaler joint, which were treated by open reduction and internal fixation from May, 1992 to Feb., 1995 in Asan Medical Center. The average follow-up period was 18.3 months ranged from two to forty three months. According to the Essex-Lopresti classification, there were 12 cases of joint depression type, 11 cases of tongue type, and 3 cases of comminuted type. In 10 cases which were evaluated with CT scan, there were 4 cases of type Ⅱ, 4 cases of type Ⅲ, and 2 cases of type Ⅳ according to the Sander's classification. We used the extensive lateral approach and applied cervical H-plate or reconstruction plate in most cases for internal fixation. The results of the treatment were obtained as followed ; Bohler angle was recovered on the average 27.0°from -3.5°preoperatively to 23.5°postoperatively ; Gissane angle, 0.5°from 119.1°to 119.6°; the height of heel, 19% to 96% and the width of the calcaneus was reduced 16% to 105% of contralateral one respectively. The functional results of operation were good or excellent, but those of severely comminuted type were unsatisfactory. We concluded that the fractures of the calcaneus are still unsolved problem, but should be managed in the principle of the treatment of the intraarticular fracture, and this can be done through the extensive lateral approach with ease and safe.

Wilsons disease is a rare inborn error of metabolism inherited as a autosomal recessive trait. The disease has varied mode of manifestations. It is characterized by different neurologic disorder, hepatic disease from asymptomatic cirrhosis to fulminent hepatic failure, hemolytic anemia associated hepatic failure, renal osteodystrophy and psychiatric disease. We experience a case of uilsons disease. The patient was 21 years old male, He was suffered from liver cirrhosis, splenomegaly, ascites, classical neurologic symptoms such as dysarthria, tremer, mask-1ike face, rigidity. And he has Kayser-Fleischer ring. Serum ceruloplasmin was very low and urine copper, tissue copper were very high. Liver needle biopsy revealed cirrhotic change.

<P>Although over 30 common genetic susceptibility loci have been identified to be independently associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genetic risk variants reported to date explain only a small fraction of heritability. To identify novel susceptibility variants for CAD and confirm those previously identified in European population, GWAS and a replication study were performed in the Koreans and Japanese. In the discovery stage, we genotyped 2123 cases and 3591 controls with 521 786 SNPs using the Affymetrix SNP Array 6.0 chips in Korean. In the replication, direct genotyping was performed using 3052 cases and 4976 controls from the KItaNagoya Genome study of Japan with 14 selected SNPs. To maximize the coverage of the genome, imputation was performed based on 1000 Genome JPT+CHB and 5.1 million SNPs were retained. CAD association was replicated for three GWAS-identified loci (1p13.3/SORT1 (rs599839), 9p21.3/CDKN2A/2B (rs4977574), and 11q22.3/ PDGFD (rs974819)) in Koreans. From GWAS and a replication, SNP rs3782889 showed a strong association (combined P=3.95 10(-14)), although the association of SNP rs3782889 doesn't remain statistically significant after adjusting for SNP rs11066015 (proxy SNP with BRAP (r(2)=1)). But new possible CAD-associated variant was observed for rs9508025 (FLT1), even though its statistical significance did marginally reach at the genome-wide a significance level (combined P=6.07 10(-7)). This study shows that three CAD susceptibility loci, which were previously identified in European can be directly replicated in Koreans and also provides additional evidences implicating suggestive loci as risk variants for CAD in East Asian.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study investigates As(V) removal from aqueous solutions using a novel amine-doped acrylic ion exchange fiber. The amine doping reaction was confirmed using FT-IR, and the surface of the fiber was characterized using FEG-SEM. The synthesis process was completed within 60min using an AlCl3·6H2O catalyst at 100°C, and the resulting in a fiber with an ion exchange capacity of 7.5meq/g. The removal efficiency of the A-60 fiber was affected by the solution pH, and the efficiency was optimum at pH 3.04. As(V) adsorption on the fiber was rapid in the first 20min and reached equilibrium in 60min. As(V) removal followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the Redlich-Peterson adsorption isotherm model provided the best fit of the equilibrium data. The fiber has an As(V) adsorption capacity (<I>qe </I>) of 205.32±3.57mg/g, which is considerably higher than literature values and commercial adsorbents. The removal efficiency of the fiber was above 83% of the initial value after nine regeneration cycles.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A novel amine-doped acrylic fiber was suitable for the removal of As(V) from water. </LI> <LI> The amine doping reaction was complete within 60min under catalysis at 100°C. </LI> <LI> The maximum adsorption capacity (<I>qe)</I> for As(V) was 205.3±3.6mg/g. </LI> <LI> This fiber can be an affordable and reusable ion exchange medium. </LI> </UL> </P>

A series of detailed study was performed to identify the sources of the propeller blade failure and resolve the problem systematically, by use of the theoretical tools and by the direct measurement and observation in the full-scale sea trials. The selection of inexperienced propulsion control system with a reversible gear system is shown to cause the serious damage to the propeller blades in crash astern maneuver, when the rotational direction of the propeller is changed rapidly. Quasi-steady analysis for propeller blade strength using FEM code in bollard backing condition indicates that the safety factor should be order of 18∼20 to avoid the structural failure for the selected propeller geometry and reduction gear system.

<P>We evaluated the effects of the two main kiwifruit cultivars (gold kiwifruit (GOK) and green kiwifruit (GRK)) and their active phenolic compound, quercetin, on H2O2-induced inhibition of gap-junction intercellular communication (GJIC) in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells. We found that both GOK and GRK protect WB-F344 cells from H2O2-induced inhibition of GJIC. The extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2)-connexin 43 (Cx43) signalling pathway is crucial for the regulation of GJIC, and both GOK and GRK blocked the H2O2-induced phosphorylation of Cx43 and ERK1/2 in WB-F344 cells. Quercetin alone attenuated the H2O2-mediated ERK1/2-Cx43 signalling pathway and consequently reversed H2O2-mediated inhibition of GJIC in WB-F344 cells. A free radical-scavenging assay using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed that the scavenging activity of quercetin was higher than that of a synthetic antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene, per mol, suggesting that the chemopreventive effect of quercetin on H2O2-mediated inhibition of ERK1/2-Cx43 signalling and GJIC may be mediated through its free radical-scavenging activity. Since the carcinogenicity of reactive oxygen species such as H2O2 is attributable to the inhibition of GJIC, GOK, GRK and quercetin may have chemopreventive potential by preventing the inhibition of GJIC.</P>
