Influence of CBCT parameters on image quality and the diagnosis of vertical root fractures in teeth with metallic posts: an ex vivo study

        Lagos de Melo Larissa Pereira,Queiroz Polyane Mazucatto,Moreira-Souza Larissa,Nadaes Mariana Rocha,Santaella Gustavo Machado,Oliveira Matheus Lima,Freitas Deborah Queiroz 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.2

Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of peak kilovoltage (kVp) and a metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool on image quality and the diagnosis of vertical root fracture (VRF) in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods Twenty single-rooted human teeth filled with an intracanal metal post were divided into 2 groups: control (n = 10) and VRF (n = 10). Each tooth was placed into the socket of a dry mandible, and CBCT scans were acquired using a Picasso Trio varying the kVp (70, 80, 90, or 99), and the use of MAR (with or without). The examinations were assessed by 5 examiners for the diagnosis of VRF using a 5-point scale. A subjective evaluation of the expression of artifacts was done by comparing random axial images of the studied protocols. The results of the diagnoses were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and the Tukey post hoc test, the subjective evaluations were compared using the Friedman test, and intra-examiner reproducibility was evaluated using the weighted kappa test (α = 5%). Results The kVp and MAR did not influence the diagnosis of VRF (p > 0.05). According to the subjective classification, the 99 kVp protocol with MAR demonstrated the least expression of artifacts, while the 70 kVp protocol without MAR led to the most artifacts. Conclusions Protocols with higher kVp combined with MAR improved the image quality of CBCT examinations. However, those factors did not lead to an improvement in the diagnosis of VRF. • Can Artificial Intelligence Know about Beauty? - A Kantian Approach

( Larissa Berger ) 중앙대학교 인문콘텐츠연구소 2018 인공지능인문학연구 Vol.2 No.-

It is a widely held view that beauty is not a property of objects being independent of human beings. Rather, feelings are supposed to be constitutive of beauty, a view that is prominently defended in Kant’s aesthetics. Furthermore, Kant holds that there are no rules of taste. In contrast, artificial intelligence (AI) at the current stage of development is not able to have feelings proper, but is only able to apply rules (algorithms). Hence, beauty poses a great challenge to AI. In this article, I will investigate the question of whether AI can know about beauty. Relying on a distinction between three phenomena - namely, the aesthetic experience, the judgment of taste, and the knowledge that an object is beautiful - I will differentiate three sub-questions: (1) Can AI have aesthetic experience? (2) Can AI make judgments of taste? (3) Can AI know about beauty? AI will eventually neither be able to have aesthetic experiences nor to make judgments of taste. Still, allowing for weak, empirical rules of taste AI should be able to know about beauty in a weak sense, i.e., identify beautiful objects with a certain likelihood.

Prevention of Prostate Cancer in Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate Mice by Yellow Passion Fruit Extract and Antiproliferative Effects of Its Bioactive Compound Piceatannol

        Larissa Akemi Kido,Eun-Ryeong Hahm,Su-Hyeong Kim,Andressa Mara Baseggio,Valeria Helena Alves Cagnon,Shivendra V. Singh,Mário Roberto Maróstica Jr 대한암예방학회 2020 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.25 No.2

Piceatannol (PIC), a polyphenol presents in many vegetables and fruits including yellow passion fruit extract (PFE; Passiflora edulis), has anti-cancer activity, but its molecular targets are still poorly understood. The aims of this study were to investigate the molecular mechanistic actions of PIC in prostate cancer cell lines and to test if the extract from PFE rich in PIC can affect the growth of prostate cancer cells in the Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate (TRAMP) model. The PC-3, 22Rv1, LNCaP, and VCaP prostate cancer cells were exposed to PIC (10-40 μM), and cell viability, lactate measurement, Western blot, and flow cytometric analyses were performed. For an in vivo experiments, eight-week-old TRAMP mice (n = 10 per group each) received an aqueous extract of PFE containing 20 mg of PIC/kg or water (control group) by gavage for 4 or 10 weeks for further analyses. PIC treatment concentration- and time-dependently reduced viability of all cell lines tested. 22Rv1 and LNCaP cells treated with PIC did not exhibit any significant alteration in the intracellular accumulation of lactate. PIC treatment caused G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in both LNCaP and 22Rv1 cells. PIC-treated cells exhibited altered protein levels of p53, p21, cyclin D1, and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (cdk4). The short and long-term PFE treatments also affected p21, cyclin D1 and cdk4 and delayed disease progression in TRAMP, with a decreased incidence of preneoplastic lesions. In conclusion, PIC apparently does not alter glucose metabolism in prostate cancer cells, while cell cycle arrest and p53 modulation are likely important in anti-cancer effects of PIC alone or as a food matrix byproduct in prostate cancer cells, especially those with an androgen-dependent phenotype.

Brazilian Berry Extract Differentially Induces Inflammatory and Immune Responses in Androgen Dependent and Independent Prostate Cancer Cells

Larissa Akemi Kido,Isabela Maria Urra Rossetto,Andressa Mara Baseggio,Gabriela Bortolanza Chiarotto,Letícia Ferreira Alves,Felipe Rabelo Santos,Celina de Almeida Lamas,Mário Roberto Maróstica Jr,Valér 대한암예방학회 2022 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.27 No.3

Jaboticaba is a Brazilian berry, which is rich in fibers and bioactive compounds and shows high antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common type of cancer among men and its progression is influenced by androgens and inflammation. Previous studies reported the ability of the jaboticaba to modulate pathways involved in prostate diseases. The main objective of this study was to provide significant data about molecular targets of the jaboticaba peel extract (JPE) and its mechanisms of action in PCa cell lines with different androgenic status (LNCaP and PC-3). The results showed that JPE was able to decrease cell viability in both cell lines. LNCaP showed more sensitivity to JPE exposure, indicating the efficacy of the JPE treatment in terms of androgen responsiveness. JPE showed a distinct hormone dependent effect on the NF-κB signaling, with reduced NF-κB levels for LNCaP and increased NF-κB levels in PC-3 cells. Mechanisms related to cell death by apoptosis were stimulated after the JPE treatment, modulating B-cell lymphoma 2 and BAX for LNCaP and PC-3. Particularly for PC-3, the JPE treatment resulted in cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction activation mostly by up regulating pro-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive genes. Also, a set of genes related to angiogenesis and metastasis were down-regulated by JPE. In conclusion, JPE exerted an antitumor effect on PCa for both cell lines which can be enhanced if androgenic reliance is considered.

      • Being there: society of the Phoneur Gendered customising of mobile telephonic net practices in Seoul

Larissa Hjorth,Heewon Kim 한국방송학회 2004 한국방송학회 세미나 및 보고서 Vol.- No.-

As symbolic of globalised ICTs (Information and Communication Technology), the mobile phone attracts debates about the demise of geography, tradition and sociality. However, one look at the ways in which particular cultures appropriate and localized the mobile phone suggests things may not be so simple. In the Asia-Pacific region we can see that mobile telephonic practices are diverse with uneven penetration rates, in each specific site mobile phones are used in different ways, capitulating to the experiences of locality. The region houses the ""four tigers"" (Seoul, Taipei, Singapore and Hong Kong) with penetration rates of over 75% whilst in other areas there is as little as 4.2% (Katz and Aakhus 2002: 5). Locations such as Tokyo and Seoul have been the first places to successfully implement 3-G (third generation) mobile devices within everyday practices. In these areas forms of customisation signify both processes of individualization and social capital. Moving beyond gender stereotypes and prevailing Techno-Orientalism, one can see that cute character customization is a contested terrain being transformed by new mobile net telephonic practices. This paper looks specifically at the ways mobile net telephony is used (particularly through modes of customisation) in Seoul to contest the often cited claim that mobile telephony is not just a vehicle for individuality but responsible for increasingly alienation and disintegration of traditional forms of sociality and spatiality. As an example of a location immersed by 3-G technologies, Seoul provides a compelling context for analysis, specifically in terms of the debates about ICT's mediation of actual contact and the formation of individualization and social capital. In the case of Seoul, we can see that mobile telephony operates as a vehicle to revise the traditional notion of ""chon"" in order to further enhance pre-existing relations whilst also forging new ""connections"". Experiences of both strengthening already existing forms of social capital and also affording avenues to extend beyond the known friendships and meet new like-minded individuals, Seoul's mobile net telephony provides a curious model in debates around mediation, individualisation and social capital. In this way, mobile telephony must be understood in terms of remediation - that is remediating and extending from older technologies, practices and social relations - and thus demonstrating that whilst paradoxes abound in contemporary modern societies, mobile technologies do not necessarily fracture older forms of sociality and cultural practices (Bolter and Grusin 1999; Flew 2002).

Modeling Meridians Within the Quantum Field Theory

        Larissa Brizhik,Enrico Chiappini,Patrizia Stefanini,Giuseppe Vitiello 사단법인약침학회 2019 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.12 No.1

We present here a model of meridians in the formalism of the gauge theory paradigm of quantum field theory with spontaneous breakdown of symmetry. We discuss the origin and dynamic self-focusing propagation of the electromagnetic field in coherent states and the role it plays in our meridian modeling. Within this frame, we consider the formation of solitary waves on proteins and anatomical filamentary structures and discuss nondissipative energy transport. Finally, we analyze the relation of meridians with anatomical filamentary structures, the reciprocal actions between meridians, and biochemical activity and the key role played by free energy, internal energy, and entropy.

The changing role of ports as locations for logistics activities

Larissa M. van der Lugt,Peter W. de Langen Jungseok Research Institute of International Logis 2005 JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS AND TRADE Vol.3 No.2

Ports are often seen as engines behind regional economic development, because ports attract a variety of economic activities. This paper focuses on the role of ports in global supply chains and the opportunities to attract new economic activities in logistics. The central argument of the paper is that the role of ports as a location for logistics activities evolves with the evolution of logistics concepts. Evidence from West Europe is discussed. With the evolution of logistics concepts towards central coordination and more decentralized physical distribution, ports will see its multinational function diminish, eventually replaced by logistics activities with a more regional function and stronger integrated with production activities. Ports then have to face the competition from inland locations for value added logistics activities. The case of logistics developments provides a basis for analysing the increasingly important questions "What logistics activities ports can attract?" and "What is the appropriate strategy to result in this?"

Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Impact and Predictive Factors

        Larissa Caetano Silva,Renata B.P. Melo Seixas,Elisa de Carvalho 대한소아소화기영양학회 2020 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.23 No.3

Purpose: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents is associated with high morbidity and possibly has a significant negative impact on their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life of children and adolescents with IBD and define the variables that impact these individuals. Methods: We administered the Pediatric Quality of Life Questionnaire (PedsQL) to 35 children and adolescents diagnosed with IBD and with available quantitative data from clinical records on epidemiology, clinical evolution, complementary tests, medical interventions, and disease activity. Data were evaluated according to the IBD type and compared with a control group of healthy children. Results: The study group showed a significantly lower PedsQL score than the control group (p<0.01). Significant factors contributing to poor overall quality of life included female sex, Crohn's disease, surgery, and food restrictions. Symptoms such as diarrhea and the fear of using public toilets were associated with low physical scores. Feeling sick had a negative impact on the emotional PedsQL scores. Patients with a fear of using public toilets, anthropometric scores below the 3rd percentile, and greater disease activity scored lower in the social domain. Regarding school and psychosocial evaluations, younger children with symptom onset after the age of 2 years had lower scores than younger children with symptom onset before the age of 2 years. Conclusion: IBD negatively affects the quality of life of children and adolescents based on its impact on the physical, emotional, social, and psychosocial statuses of these patients.

Hybrid Nanostructures Based on Polyethylene and Polyester Fiber Residue from Platforms Offshore: Effect of Nanoclay as Co-Compatibilizer Agent in Immiscible Blends

        Larissa Costa Zorzanelli,Elaine Cristina L. Pereira,Layz Mata Salimena,Elen B. A. Vasques Pacheco,Antonio Henrique Monteiro F. T. Silva,Luiz Carlos Bertolino,Milton B. Bastos,Ana Maria F. de Sousa,Ana 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.1

In the present research, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyester, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), residue fromplatforms offshore, were blended in the presence of a coupling agent, a polyethylene-grafted maleic anhydride (HDPE-g-MA). The HDPE/HDPE-g-MA/PET blends were processed by melt mixing in a twin-screw extruder, using a factorial design. Theprocessing conditions were set so that the PET remained in the fiber shape in the melt. The effect of a nanoclay, montmorilloniteclay (MMT), in the blends as co-compatibilizer was evaluated by mechanical, rheological, thermal and morphologicalanalyses. The results showed that there is an interaction between PET fibers and MMT nanoclay. The yield properties(stress and strain) decreased with the addition of PET fibers. Young’s modulus and stress at break property increased withhigh PET fibers and MMT contents. An interaction between PET and MMT contents was also observed on the maximumdegradation temperature (TMÁX): the compositions with higher PET and MMT contents showed a higher thermal stability. The rheological results showed that a more pronounce solid-like behavior was achieved when MMT was added in the HDPE/HDPE-g-MA/PET blend. These results indicate that MMT nanoclay has potential as co-compatibilizer in HDPE/HDPE-g-MA/PET blends. This was due to its preferential localization in the PET fiber domains and interphase between HDPE andPET, as showed in SEM analysis.
