        Improvement of Desulfurization Efficiency via Numerical Simulation Analysis of Transport Phenomena of Kanbara Reactor Process

        The Kanbara reactor (KR) process is a mechanical stirring method that reacts hot metal with desulfurization flux; it is a widelyimplemented desulfurization method in contemporary steel production. This study aimed to develop a new impeller profilefor improving the desulfurization efficiency of the KR process. We implemented operational data analysis, a computationalfluid dynamics simulation based on the operational data and performed testing and analysis with impeller models on-site aproduction facility. Operational data from the production facility was gathered over a 3-year period. Seven impeller modelswith varying impeller blade width (top and bottom), height, inclination, and curvature (curved, straight, and combination)were simulated. The results were analyzed to determine the optimal conditions. A new impeller design was selected for onsiteoperational testing to investigate the in situ desulfurization efficiency over 350 charges, and the results corroborated thepredictions by the numerical simulations. It is expected that the proposed process modification can be successfully used forimproving industrial desulfurization efficiency.

        Effects of Variation of Heat Flux Released from the Meniscus on the Surface Shape of the Solidified Shell During Continuous Casting

        Mold oscillations, widely used in continuous casting for infiltrating the mold flux between the mold and the solidified shell,change periodically the heat flux from the meniscus to mold. These variations of the heat flux affect the solidification behaviornear an initial solidification position. Because the surface shape of the solidified shell is influenced by the initial solidificationbehavior, it is important to understand the relation between the mold oscillation, the heat flux and initial solidificationbehavior. In the present study, we developed a numerical model that simulates the flow and thermal behavior of the moldflux near the meniscus. Using this model, we analyze the effects of the variations of the heat flux from the meniscus on theinitial solidification position and suggest the formation mechanism of the oscillation marks (OMs) and the hooks. Also, wewill present quantitative results about the depth of the OMs and the length of the hooks at the conditions used in the presentstudy. The factors that influence the hooks’ types and the causes of the irregularity of the shell surface are also discussed.

        Effects of the Ultrasound Treatment on Reaction Rates in the RH Processor Water Model System

        Ruhrstahl–Heraeus (RH) processor is widely applied to the refining process to produce steel with very low carbon contents. In this study, to investigate the effect of ultrasound treatment on RH decarburization process, we have developed two kinds ofthe water models simulated the RH process and study the removal rate of dissolved oxygen. The one is the RH water modelof 1/8 size of actual RH degasser simulated the late-stage of the RH process when surface reaction and plume reaction mainlyoccur. Through this model, it is found that the ultrasound treatment accelerates dissolved oxygen removal reaction and thistendency is maintained even at low concentrations. Also, the results show that there is a difference in the degassing efficiencydepending on the frequencies and the positions of the ultrasonic transducer. Also, to simulate the Early-stage Reaction ofthe process including the inner-site reaction which is difficult to investigate through the RH water model, the other watermodel has been developed (the RH-ER water model). This model shows that the ultrasound treatment facilitates the earlystagereaction including inner-site reaction, like the RH water model. These results show that the addition of the ultrasoundtreatment can accelerate decarburization reaction during RH process compared to conventional process.

      • Digital infrared thermal imaging in osteoporosis

        This study examined the relationship between bone mineral density and DITI in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. An analysis was performed on the thermographic findings of 20 patients without osteoporosis, 20 with osteopenia and 20 with osteoporosis at the Kangnan Korean Hospital, Kyung-Hee University, Seoul, Koera, from June 1998 to February 1999. The osteoporosis was measured by LUNAR PIXI and the body temperature was assessed by DITI. Thermogrphic measurements were performed on 4 areas(acupuncture point: CV12, CV4, BL23 and BL26). All data were coded for computer analysis and significances were tested by Duncan test. There was no significant diference in age among the three groups of patients. DITI revealed the significant hypothermia (p<0.001) on the osteoporosis patients compared with osteopenia and normal bone density patients. It is believed tha DITI may be a favorable alternative to diagnosis of osteoporosis.

      • 靈樞·寒熱病에 對한 硏究

        The contents of Han Yul Byung(寒熱病) are explained on the basis of the so-called theory "Yin and Yang, the Five Evolutive Phases(음양오행)". The text of the Han Yul Byung(寒熱病) of the Young Chu(靈樞) was written in the Kap Ul Kyung(甲乙經) chapter 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12. Also it was written in the Tae So(太素) volume 10 and 26. Also it was introduced in the Ryu Kyung(類經) volume 20, 21 and 22 by Jang Kae-Pin(張介賓) in the Myung(明) dynasty. Summarizing the contents of the Han Yul Byung in reference to the contents of successive generation note, the contents run as follows: Chapter 1 deals with the symptoms and treatment of diseases which accompany chills and fever(寒熱病). Chapter 2 deals with arthralgia with other joint systems(骨痺) and flaccid paralysis of Iimbs(體惰病). Chapter 3 deals with indications of five points around the Chen You Points(天牖穴). Chapter 4 deals with the treatment of toothache. Chapter 5 deals with the treatment of headache and eye pain. Chapter 6 deals with the acupuncture manipulation according to changes of season. Chapter 7 deals with the serious influence of carbuncle according to the region of body. Chapter 8 deals with the treatment of heat-syndrome. Chapter 9 deals with the side effect of acupuncture. It is too difficult to understand the Han Yul Byung(寒熱病), because it is written in old chinese. Consequence of above reason, the writer of this article has researched to find out the exact meaning of that.

        본 연구는 영어 형태와 의미전달에 관한 최근의 시각을 재조명해보고 문법 교육의 필요성을 알아보았다. 학습자 변이 (나이, 영어수준, 등)와 학습 도구 변이 (기술, 동기, 등)를 탐구한 후 연역법/귀납법, 문법 교정 방법, 모국어 사용 여부, 형태와 의미 분리 등 문법 교육의 만성적 논쟁점을 조사하였다. 결과적으로 많은 학자들은 영어에 있어 형태와 의미를 분리할 수 없으며 문법의 기초 지식 없이는 의미 있는 영어회화 구사에 한계가 있음을 지적하였다. 언어 사용은 단어와 구문과 의미를 잘 연관시켜 특정한 상황의 문맥에 맞게 작용할 수 있는 능력을 말한다. 따라서 영어로 의사소통을 훌륭히 해내기 위해서는 문법과 회화의 통합된 학습과정이 필요하다. 교실에서 문법 또는 회화의 분리된 교육보다는 문법과 회화를 동시에 가르칠 수 있는 효과적인 방법들이 더욱 개발 되어야겠다.

        부인암에서의 Telomerase 활성도와 자궁경부암 조직에서의 HPV E6 의 발현과 Telomerase 활성도의 상관관계

        N/A Object : In this study, to evaluate the putative role of telomerase in gynecologic malignancies (cervical ca, ovarian ca, endometrial ca), we measured telomerase activity in malignant gynecologic tumor tissues and normal tussues, and compared it with prognostic factors in cervical cancer. To evaluate the correlation of telomerase activity and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in cervical cancer, the analysis of HPV E6 gene was performed. Method : Specimens were obtained from 51 women who underwent gynecologic radical operation and 13 normal tissues (from December 1995 to December 1996) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kyung-Hee Univ. Medical Center. With Telomerase PCR ELISA (Boehring Mannheim), modified TRAP (Telomere Repeat Amplication Protocol), we examined telomerase activity of 32 cervical carcinomas, 11 ovarian carcinomas, 8 endometrial carcinomas, 5 normal cervical tissues, 4 normal ovarian tissues and 4 normal endometrial tissues. The analysis of HPV E6 gene was performed by PCR amplication. We compared the abnormally high telomerase activity with prognostic factors, also compared the telomerase activity with the expression of HPV E6 gene in cervical cancer tissues. Result : We detected the abnormally high telomerase activity in all cervical carcinomas, 10 of 11 (90.9%) ovarian carcinomas, 6 of 8 (75.0%) endometrial carcinomas, but couldn't detect in each normal tissues. There was statistically no significant difference of telomerase activity levels according to age, clinical stage, pathology, differentiation, LN involvement, depth of invasion and tumor size except lymphovascular space invasion in cervical carcinomas (p<0.05). According to the analysis of HPV E6 gene, 29 of 32 (90.6%) in 32 cervical cancer tissues showed HPV E6 positivity. So it was considered that telomerase activation was closely related with the expression of HPV E6 gene. Conclusion : Telomerase activation is associated with immortalization or malignant transformation of gynecologic cancers. The expression of HPV E6 gene is considered to activate telomerase in cervical cancer.

      • Accuracy on the Edge Detection of Topography for Digital Map Manufacture

        Currently, digital maps in the metropolitan area are supposed to be revised and renewed every two years, but it is difficulty for the renewal of current information to keep pace with the quickly changing society and so, one of the alternative methods being discussed is a digital map produced using high resolution satellites. The biggest problem in the production of digital maps using high resolution satellite images is the difficulty of production in vector resource format through edge detection of satellite images, a Raster data. In this study, topographical boundaries were detected through edge detection of the satellite image, and after vectorliezing using the screen digitizing method, the results were evaluated and compared to the digital map from the NGII(National Geographic Information Institute) for accuracy.

        N/A Most authorities agree the higher incidence of gallstones among diabetic patient. Although many reports on gallstones or diabetes mellitus have been published, and actual correlation between gallstones and diabetes mellitus remains obscure. The purpose of this reports is to know the incidence of gallstone in diabetics and of diabetics in the patients with gallstone. Authors studied prospectively and clinically the diabetics in a group of 173 patients with gallstones and gallstone in a group of 98 diabetic patients who were admitted to Yonsei University Yong-Dong Hospital for the same period of April 1983 to May 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follow: The incidence of gallstone to general admission patients is 1.5% and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus to total in-patients is 0.8% The gallstone was found in 11.0% of diabetics and were diabetic 19.4% of patients with gallstones. The age of peak incidence of gallstones is 5th decade and female was more prevalent than male with the ratio of 1.37:1. The age of peak incidence of diabetes mellitus is 6 th decade and female is less prevalent with the ratio of 0.72:l.3, The most common characteristic finding of patients of gallstones with diabetes mellitus is symptomless(42.1%)4, There is no significant difference in serum levels of cholesterol and triglyceride between diabetic and non-diabetic groups or with and without gallstones. 5. Comparative study on location of stones revealed, 72.8% in gallbladder only, 12.7% in common bile duct only, 4. 6% in intrahepatic duct only, and remainders in multiple site. There is no significant difference in terms of location of stone between diabetic and nondiabetic group.

        고속도로변 Sky-Line 확보를 위한 방음벽 높이에 대한 연구

        The purpose of this study is to determine the effective height of the noise barrier for the highway Sky-Line Project. It builds upon previous studies that analyzed soundproofing measures of roads and their surrounding residential areas. Although many soundproofing measures have been established along the road side, this study has the added distinction of considering residential noise prevention measures as well as the Soundproofing system itself. The process of this study is as follows. First, it took field surveys to check the existing physical states of the noise barrier, roads, and residences along the Kyung-bu highway in Seoul area. Second, this study conducted and analyzed surveys targeting road side residents, highway drivers, specialists in architecture, urban planning and design, landscape, road, noise, and transportation. Third, it calculated the optional height of the noise barrier for a comfortable driving environment and building the Sky-Line on the Highway, applying and checking its results on a case study. Finally, we verified the height on the Kyung-bu highway using the HW-NOISE simulation program.
