Vol.15 No.-

The question as to the influence of parental attitude on subsequent personality development of their children is a contentious one. Some researchers indicate that parental attitude is perceived distortedly or exaggeratedly by the cognitive trait of the child. In this connection, people are often perceived erroneously due to biased perceptual trait of the individual and the distention in the perception of other people and parental attitude on rearing can be understood in this context. In this study, it was assumed that the individual difference in the child's preception of parental attitude on rearing is due to perception trait as in the case of person perception. In this context it is attempted to clarify the degree of difference in the perception of the mother's warm rearing attitude between mother and child and difference in the person perception due to the perception trait of the child, also, the relation between the difference in perception of mother and child and the person perception is investigated. The subjects are a set of 444 students of universities in Seoul metropolitan area. Questions for testing perceptual trait of students proposed by Jung-Hoon Choi(1972) are used to test perceptual traits of children and 22 pairs of adjectives modified by the authors among 100 pairs of adjectives of Sung-Youn Lee(1988) are used for person perception. 17 questions about the warm rearing attitude among 32 questions about the test of rearing attitude of parents proposed by Young-Mi Lee(1991) are use to measure the warm rearing attitude of mothers perceived by mother and child. The data is analyzed by t-test, paired t-test, and correlation analysis. The result of this study may be summarized of main issues as followed. First, there exists a difference in the person perception due to perceptual trait of the child. Child of positive perceptual trait is more positive in the person perception than child of negative perceptual trait. Second, there exists a difference between the mother and the child in the perception of warm rearing attitude of the mother and the degree of perception of the mother is greater than child's. Third, there exists a differnce in the degree of perception of warm rearing attitude between mother and child due to the perceptual trait of child. The difference in perception of warm rearing attitude of mother between the mother and child is smaller for a child of positive perceptual trait than a child of negative perceptual trait whose level of perception is less than that of the mother. Forth, a child having positive person perception is more positive in the perception of the warm rearing attitude of a mother than mother and child having negative person perception is more negative in the perception of the warm rearing attitude of a mother than a mother.

Vol.37 No.-

This paper aims to elucidate the American dream and symbolism in The Great Gatsby. My concern is with how the whole career of Gatsby is related with the American dream and its failure. The major symbols such as the East and the West, the valley of ashes, and the green light have very important functions to represent Gatsby's dream and failure which is identified with American experience. The East and the West, East Eggers and West Eggers, for example, stands for the moral situation of the characters in each region. When early explorers escaped the corruption of the old world to establish a new ideal in America, they went from east to west. Since the ideal has been corrupted, people travel from west to east, attracted by the wealth and sophistication. They lose traditional moral virtues of the West except Nick who appreciates traditional moral enviroment of his home at the Middle West. The valley of ashes represents the spiritual desolation of modern world and the eyes of Dr. Eckleburg represents some kind of detached intellect, brooding gloomily over on the bleak wasteland surrounding it, and presiding over the tragedy of the characters. The green light in the last paragraph of the novel which reminds us of Gatsby's dream for Daisy is compared to the new world, the promise of America for the Dutch sailors, and the wasteland of Long Island of the 1920s. So Gatsby's whole career is finally made into a metaphor for the American experience.

Vol.35 No.-

Emily Bronte's Wuthering Hights has been considered as a classic novel with a diversity of meaning in the English novel. However, it is noteworthy that the novel has a balance of its structure and funtion. So, this thesis, I tried to elucidate its symmetrical structure and function; two narrators, two houses, and two children figure. The whole action of Wuthering Heights is th form of eye-witness narrations by people who have played some part in the events they describe. Lockwood's diary is the outer framework of the whole story. The purpose of Bronte's narrative method is to draw the reader into a position where he can only judge its events from within. Furthermore, the novel gains universally by the special values it gives to every feature in a remote, provincial setting; and its chief features are the two rival house which are always in the foreground. The characters of the novel, and their life are closely related with their setting. The repetition of two children figure is considered a very important element to explore the action of this novel. At same time this leads to the theme of the novel, an allegory of ‘storm and caim’,which we are tempted to read. The novel maintains its Romantic/Victorian duality while achieving its predominantly indoor conclusion-an achievement that is also maintained in the fact that the novel has managed to get written and its story to be effectively communicated to Lockwood.

Vol.4 No.-

The nutritional requirements of Curvularia blight pathogens of turf (Agrostis cannina L,) causing by Curvularia geniculate were examined of various nutritional sources. The experimental results obtained summarized as follows. 1. The effects of optimum hydrogen lon concentration on the growth of this fungus in Czapek's solution medium were 6.0 and the mycelial growth was also observed in the range of pH 3.0∼9.0 2. The effects of optimum temperature on the growth of the fungus in Czapek's solution medium was 25-30℃. 3. In the effects of carbon sources on the growth of this fungus, sucrose showed the best result, and followed glucose, soluble starch, and xylose. Polyalcohol and organic acid as carbon sources affect the growth of this fungus only slightly. 4. In the effects of nitrogen sources on the growth of this fungus, ammonium nitrate and ammonium citrate affect the best results, and followed ammonium phosphate, ammonium oxalate, ammonium tartrate, and potassium nitrate. Ammonium nitrite affect the growth of this fungus only slightly. In generally, NH_4-N and NO_3-N showed the best results, whereas NO_2-N was less effective in all the nitrogens. 5. The effects of various chemicals in the formation of inhibition zone were larger in Dexon and Thiram 75, and followed PTM-V, Difolatan and Thiuramin, whereas Bla-s was not effective.

Vol.28 No.-

The leisurely rambling narratives, The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance represent a relaxation from the intense creative mood that gave birth to The Scarlet Letter. Most critics of The House of the Seven Gables fail to discover any structural pattern. The usual conclusion is that the book consists of a series of episodes tied loosely together by the theme of inherited curse. It is frequently interrupted by long character delineations, flights into the past, musings over matters that are irrelevant to the action of the story. When the various episodes and apparent digressions are considered thematically, however, the work takes on a unity not recognizable when it is viewed solely as narrative. According to Dillingham, structurally, The House is composed of a series of antitheses with three particular contrasts between aristocracy and democracy, the isolated and unisolated, appearance and reality dominating the book. To these dominant contrasts the work owes its major theme. man's isolation and the necessity of his close communion with his fellow beings. However, in the structure of the novel, the house has net only symbolic meaning as setting but also centripetal force which overwhelms characters and action of the story, and lost deed plays an important role as thread weaving narrative. These structural shapes closely combine with the theme of this work: withdrawl and return, which Hawthorne interpreted as isolation and redemptive reunion. Primarily because of its basic weakness in plot, The House is not Hawthorne's best work. It is, nevertheless, much more than a series of unrelated tales that contribute nothing to the total effect but a kind of irrelevant whimsicality. Organized under a pervading theme, the seemingly diverse elements of the novel can be said to form a united ensemble. No American novelist before Hawthorne had undertaken to meditate on the interpenetration of the past and present. As Henry James says it(this novel) is a large and generous production pervaded with that vague hum, that indefinable echo, of the whole multitudinous life of man, which is the real sign of a great work of fiction.

Play is a universal behavior in children. Play has the power not only to facilitate normal development but also to alleviate abnormal behavior. That is, play has curative effects on children. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the therapeutic factors of child's play. The therapeutic factors discussed in this paper were as follows. First, play is the best way of establishing a therapeutic alliance with a child as it is interesting, enjoyable, and natural for children. Second, play is the most natural medium for self-expression for a child; it is what verbalization is to the adult. Third, play is a self-motivated activity that satisfies a child's innate need to explore and master his environment. Successful experiences in play activity contribute to the enhancement of a child's self esteem. Fourth, in the play process, children can easily release intense feelings of anger, grief, or anxiety that had been difficult to express before. Fifth, play enhances the flexible and varied use of a child's imaginative capacities. The world of imag-ination - or 'pretending' - gives a child power over the world, even when it does not have much control in real life. Imagination can also help a child overcome impulsiveness, poor planning, and lack of confidence. Sixth, the most apparent and fundamental aspect of play is that children enjoy it. Children play just because it is fun. Enjoyment, and the positive a emotion of play contribute to not only a sense of happiness or well-being but is also a powerful antidote to the stress of living.

In this paper, a symbol technique of electronic circuit diagram is proposed. Digital image is preprocessed using smoothing, binary-threshold and skeleton for reducing noise adn feature extracting. Segment components are extraced by feature points which consist of start point and end poing. Corner points are determined by area deviation. Branch points and cross points are classified by number of segments. Character informations are extracted by MRA. Linear lines and curves in symbol are classified by LMS curve fitting technique. We proposed a method for constructing a look-up table which consist of such a feature information to recognize electronic symbols. Experimental results are included.

Vol.26 No.-

Hawthornes 'The Gentle Boy, which is the longest, as well as one of the best', of his tales , is not the product of a notebook, but of a tragic imagination. Hawthorne found his theme in seventeenth-century Massachusetts, this time in no unearthly boderland, but through his intensive knowledge of the central problems confronted by the history of the colony. In creating his story from the bitter consequences of the persecution of the Quakers it is almost as though his unconscious mind was insisting on performing atonement for his ancestors' part in what he calls here the Puritans' "brutal cruelty." However, 'The Gentle Boy' stands apart from Hawthorne's other historical tales such as 'The Gray Champion', 'Endicott and the Red Cross', and 'The Maypole of Merrymount' by virtue of the largeness of its theme and the broader scope it affords for the interaction of characters. During the religious persecutions in New England a Quaker child have been left helpless among the Puritans. The six-year-old Ilbrahim, bereft of his martyred father, and abandoned by his fanatical mother, is adopted into the Puritan household of Pearson and Dorothy. But everyone is story Hawthorne employs a legitimate source of pathos - the spectacle of innocence suffering in a world of evil. In this essay I have tried to illuminate how Ilbrahim's brief and troubled life is closely the tragic theme of the story as the enmity and the discontinuity. In The Gentle Boy connected with which is composed of dramatic propriety and a summary narration in the story Hawthorne represents how Ilbrahim in search of a home, his innocent life and dreams have been destroyed by the religious fanatics and anti-human, environmental force. Through the fresh and be friends again by getting rid of evil and hatred existing in New England society depraved by prejudice and severity.
