        Anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) in C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet

        Yerba Mate, derived from the leaves of the tree, Ilex paraguariensis, is widely-used as a tea or as an ingredient in formulated foods. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of Yerba Mate extract on weight loss, obesity-related biochemical parameters, and diabetes in high-fat diet-fed mice.To this end, by using in vivo animal models of dietary-induced obesity, we have made the interesting observations that Yerba Mate has the ability to decrease the differentiation of pre-adipocytes and to reduce the accumulation of lipids in adipocytes, both of which contribute to a lower growth rate of adipose tissue, lower body weight gain, and obesity. Our data from in vivo studies revealed that Yerba Mate treatment affects food intake, resulting in higher energy expenditure, likely as a result of higher basal metabolism in Yerba Mate-treated mice. Furthermore, in vivo effects of Yerba Mate on lipid metabolism included reductions in serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and glucose concentrations in mice that were fed a high fat diet. In conclusion, Yerba Mate can potentially be used to treat obesity and diabetes.

        이차전지 음극용 탄소 전극을 이용한 리튬이온 커패시터 연구

        The most common carbonaceous anode materials of lithium ion batteries (natural graphite, artificial graphite, hard carbon, and mesocarbon microbeads) were utilized as an electrode in lithium ion capacitors. It could be able to enhance the energy density of capacitors due to the intercalation of lithium ion. In this work, the properties of capacitors using the symmetric electrode were measured by organizing coin cell typed capacitors. Also, we made other capacitors having pre-intercalated lithium ions at one side of the electrode. The results of electrochemical measurements for these capacitors show that the storage capacitance was appeared. In other words, if the migration of lithium ions is supplied continuously in the electrolytes, lithium ions can be diffused into the carbonaceous materials. And it results in the improvement of capacitance compared to only using symmetric carbonaceous electrodes. Also, we conducted the same measurement with graphene oxide having a the large specific area in the same condition. Herein, we recognized that the large specific area is extremely important for supercapacitors.

        Recovery and electrochemical performance in lithium secondary batteries of biochar derived from rice straw.

        <P>Renewable biomass has attracted great attention for the production of biooil, biogas, and biochar, a carbon residual applicable for carbon sequestration and environmental remediation. Rice straw is one of the most common biomasses among agricultural wastes in South Korea. As part of our advanced and environmentally friendly research, we applied biochar derived from rice straw as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Porous carbons with a high surface area were prepared from rice straw. Such porous carbons have exhibited particularly large reversible capacity and hence proven to be a candidate anode material for high-rate and high-capacity LIBs. Rice straw-derived biochars were synthesized at four different temperatures: 400, 550, 700, and 900 C. The surface was modified by using HCl and H2O2 on the 550 C biochar in order to increase the surface area. The resulting biochar was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The surface area was measured by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The electrochemical characterizations were investigated by galvanostatic charge-discharge (CD) curves, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). All samples exhibited reversible capacities of below 200 mAh g(-1). The surface-modified biochars exhibited improved cycle performance. Surface modification using HCl showed better cycle performance than H2O2. However, the capacities of the treated 550 C biochar were similar to those of non-surface-modified biochar.</P>

      • 2형 당뇨 환자에 있어서 C형 간염의 유병률에 관한 연구

        Background: We have doubt about the truth that Type 2 DM is associated with chronic hepatitis C infection. The aim of our study was to prove a close relationship between chronic HCV infection and type 2 DM in korean patients. Methods: We reviewed the out-patient's medical records of 466 patients with type 2 DM who visit the Sung-ae hospital from March 2000 to August 2001. Diabetic patients were analyzed for the following variables: age, sex, waist circumference, weight, waist/hip ratio, using of self monitoring of blood glucose, method of therapy, duration of disease, experience of previous transfusion, major surgical procedure, accompanied disease, liver function tests (LFT), HbA1 c. We ruled out patients with liver cirrhosis. Results: Hepatitis C virus infection was observed more frequently in patient with Type 2 DM. Of 466 Type 2 DM patients, 13 patients were infected with Hepatitis C virus (2.79%). Compared with mean prevalence of Korean population (1.3~1.6%), it's value is very high. the other hand, 21 patients were infected with Hepatitis B virus (4.5%). Such results are similar to mean prevalence of the general public (4~5%). Conclusions: Prevalence of hepatitis C was closely associated in korean patients with type 2 DM. And an increased prevalence is independent of cirrhosis.

        The Coating Effects of Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> on a Li[Li<sub>0.2</sub>Mn<sub>0.54</sub>Co<sub>0.13</sub>Ni<sub>0.13</sub>]O<sub>2</sub> Surface Modified with (NH<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>

        A series of 20 wt % $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and 3 wt % $Al_2O_3$ surface treatments were applied to $Li[Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.54}Co_{0.13}Ni_{0.13}]O_2$ substrates. The $Li[Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.54}Co_{0.13}Ni_{0.13}]O_2$ substrates were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. Sample (a) was left pristine and variations of the 20 wt % $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and 3 wt % $Al_2O_3$ were applied to samples (b), (c) and (d). XRD was used to verify the space group of the samples as R$\bar{3}$m. Additional morphology and particle size data were obtained using SEM imagery. The $Al_2O_3$ coating layers of sample (b) and (d) were confirmed by TEM images and EDS mapping of the SEM images. 2032-type coin cells were fabricated in a glove box in order to investigate their electrochemical properties. The cells were charged and discharged at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) between 2.0V and 4.8V during the first cycle. The cells were then charged and discharged between 2.0V and 4.6V in subsequent cycles. Sample (d) exhibited lower irreversible capacity loss (ICL) in the first charge-discharge cycle as compared to sample (c). Sample (d) also had a higher discharge capacity of ~250 mAh/g during the first and second charge-discharge cycles when compared with sample (c). The rate capability of the $Al_2O_3$-coated sample (b) and (d) was lower when compared with sample (a) and (c). Sample (d), coated with $Al_2O_3$ after the surface treatment with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, showed an improvement in cycle performance as well as an enhancement of discharge capacity. The thermal stability of sample (d) was higher than that of the sample (c) as the result of DSC.

        폐경 후 여성의 에스트로젠 보충요법시 병합 투여된 프로제스테론이 골밀도에 미치는 영향

        It is well established that estrogen replacement therapy prevents the bone loss associated with postmenopausal state. And progestogens used alone, given in larger amount than that in estrogen replacement therapy, have been shown to reduce the postmenopausal bone loss. However, the impacts of added progestogen during estrogen replacement therapy on the bone mineral densities(BMD) are not well known. For this purpose, we analysed the changes in BMD of 104 postmenopausal women who underwent estrogen replacement therapy at least for 12 months: 36 women received estrogen only(Premarin 0.625mg/day), 41 women received estrogen with cyclic addition of progestogen(medroxyprogesterone, MPA, 10mg/day for 12 days per month), 27 women received estrogen with daily addition of progestogen(MPA 2.5mg daily). Our data revealed that continuous use of MPA in addition to estrogen for one year significantly increased the BMD of lumbar spines(L2-4) by 7.6±1.9% compared to that of before treatment while therapy with estrogen only did not(1.7±1.0%). Also cyclic addition of MPA for one year increased the BMD of lumbar spines by 6.2±1.3% compared to that of before treatment. And the increases in BMD of lumar spines derived from continuous or cyclic use of MPA in addition to estrogen were significantly greater than that from therapy with estrogen only. There was no significant difference in increases in BMD of lumbar spines between cyclic use and continuous use of MPA. And there was no significant difference in increases in BMD of femur neck among three groups. The patients who showed a decrease in BMD by more than 3% at 12 months of treatment compared to pretreatment were as follows: In BMD of lumbar spines, 16.7%(6/36) in therapy with estrogen-only, 2.4%(1/41) in the cyclic use of MPA, 3.7%(1/27) in the continuous use of MPA; In BMD of femur neck, 25.0%(9/36) in therapy with estrogen-only, 22.0%(9/41) in the cyclic use of MPA, 11.1%(3/27) in the continuous use of MPA. The unine calcium/creatinine ratio decreased during therapy in all gropus without a significant difference among three groups. These data showed that added progestogen(MPA) during estrogen replacement therapy significantly increased the bone mineral densities(BMD) of lumbar spines, and suggest that the continuous combined regimen of estrogen and progestogen may be the regimen of choice for the prevention or treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis

        Electrochemical performance of all-solid lithium ion batteries with a polyaniline film cathode

        <P>We have prepared a high-density polyaniline (PANI) paste (50 mg/mL), with similar physical properties to those of paints or pigments. The synthesis of PANI is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The morphologies of PANI, doped PANI, and doped PANI paste are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Particles of doped PANI paste are approximately 40-50 nm in diameter, with a uniform and cubic shape. The electrochemical performances of doped PANI paste using both liquid and solid polymer electrolytes have been measured by galvanostatic charge and discharge process. The cell fabricated with doped PANI paste and the solid polymer electrolyte exhibits a discharge capacity of similar to 87 mu Ah/cm(2) (64.0 mAh/g) at the second cycle and 67 mu Ah/cm(2) (50.1 mAh/g) at the 100th cycle.         야콘 추출물이 Streptozotocin으로 유도된 당뇨 동물모델에서 혈당강하에 미치는 효과

        This study was performed to investigate improvements in diabetes mellitus by extracts of yacon in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Fifty rats were divided into a normal group and four experimental groups. STZ (45 ㎎/㎏) was injected intraperitoneally to induce type I diabetes in the four experimental groups. Yacon extracts were administered for 5 weeks. Forty-five ICR mice were also divided into one positive control group and four experimental groups for the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) after fed yacon extract. The control group did not eat any yacon extracts, while Group 1 (GI) was fed 125 ㎎/㎏ of yacon extracts, Group 2 (GII) was fed 250 ㎎/㎏ of yacon extracts, and Group 3 (GIII) was fed 500 ㎎/㎏ of yacon extracts. After treatment for 5 weeks, blood glucose in GIII group showed decreased tendency at the 5 week. In OGTT by glucose, the glucose level of yacon treatment group in diabetic rats was significantly decreased compared to the glucose level of the control group, but there was no difference in OGTT by maltose. In ICR mice, the glucose level of the experimental group in OGTT by maltose was significantly decreased compared to the control group. The area of the islets of Langerhans was increased by yacon treatment in a dose-dependent manner on diabetic rats. Insulin concentration of the GIII group was also decreased compared to the control group, while the concentration of fructosamine, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in serum showed no difference. OGTT by glucose or maltose in ICR mice or diabetic rats, area of the Islets of Langerhans, and insulin concentration improved. Yacon treatment may be a useful therapeutic and preventive strategy for diabetes mellitus.
