현대과학에 의하여 밝혀진 고려인삼의 약리효능을 보면 뇌 기능 개선, 통증감소, 암 예방 및 항암작용, 면역기능 항진, 간 기능 개선, 항당뇨, 혈압 조절기능, 항피로, 항 스트레스, 여성 갱년기장애 개선, 남성 발기부전 개선, 항 산화, 항 노화 등에 관한 효능을 들 수가 있으며, 고려인삼의 효능성분으로서는 ginsenosides(인삼사포닌), 페놀화합물, 폴리아세틸렌화합물, 다당체 특히 산성다당체, 펩타이드 등이 주류를 이루고 있다. 효능성분 중에는 특히 ginsenosides에 관한 연구가 많이 수행되었는 바, 고려인삼이 타국삼에 비하여 다양한 종류의 ginsenosides가 함유되어 있다는 것이 판명되었다.

This study was carried out to clarify the effects of phytohormone, carbon source, and temperature on the growth of calluses induced from the crown gall tumor of Nicotiana tabacum var. Bright Yellow 4. Crown gall tumors were induced from stem tissues of Nicotiana tabacum var. Bright Yellow 4 by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Therefore, it was clarified that genes on a special area of Ti-plasmid, called T-DNA, became integrated and expressed in the nuclear DNA of Nicotiana tabacum var. Bright Yellow 4. The crown gall tumor tissues could be cultured on the media which did not contain any auxins or cytokinins, and white and compact calluses were observed. However, normal tissues did not grow in vitro in the absence of the phytohormones. The tumor calluses were formed profusely when cultured on the media supplemented with IAA. On the other hand, the tumor calluses tended to be formed more profusely on the medium supplemented with 5mg/ℓ IAA. The media with cytokinins, kinetin and BA, produced poor result. As for the effect of carbon sources on the growth of tumor calluses, the calluses were formed on the media with sucrose more profusely than on the media with glucose. The concentration of sucrose used for callus induction from tumor tended to be lower than that for callus formation from normal tissus and the most effective concentration of sucrose was 20 g/ℓ And the optimal temperature for the growth of tumor callus was 25℃.

These studies were carried out to clarify the formation pattern of crown gall tumor and teratoma in Nicotiana tabacum L. and the effect of arginine on the growth of tumor callus. Infection of N. tabacum var. NC 2326, NC 82, and BY 4 by A. tumefaciens C 58 led to the crown gall tumor, and teratoma and secondary tumor were also observed. The tobacco tumor callus was formed profusely on the phytohormone free medium. And shoots were, also, formed from tobacco tumor callus cultured on the phytohormone free medium. As for the effect of a arginine, it was found that arginine did not arfect the growth of tobacco tumor callus.

Plants were regenerated from callus tissues derived from tobacco crown gall tumor induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens isolated from soil, Tumorous tobacco shoots were readily derived from tumor callus tissues. All of the regenerated shoots developed into mature flowering plants. Morphological feature of their flowers was similar to that of normal plants. When self-pollination was forced, the flowers degenerated into abortive fruits. A pollen analysis revealed that these flowers possessed a variable level of pollen sterility. When tumor plants were reciprocally cross-pollinated with normal plants, plants set seeds. In crosses of normal x tumor, normaltype F₁ progenies were obtained. However, crosses of tumor x normal gave F₁ progenies that showed retention of morphological of tumor plants.

Whole plants were regenerated from the crown gall tumor tissue induced from infection of tobacco by Agrobacterium tumefaciens in order to clarify the characteristics of tumor-originated plants. Petal of tumor plant was bigger than that of normal plants. And the transformed plants derived from the tumor tissue had more chlorophyll and carotenoid than normal plants. Superinfection of the tumor plant by the other strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 led to the crown gall tumor, which was round and smooth type. The shoots were directly formed from the explant of tumor plant on the redifferentiation medium. However, the callus derived from the explant of tumor plant did not formed the shoots on the same medium.
