Static Instability of a Once-Through Steam Generator with a Modular Feedwater Line
Jae-Kwang Seo(서재광),Han-Ok Kang(강한옥),Juhyeon Yoon(윤주현),Keung-Koo Kim(김긍구) 대한기계학회 2006 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2006 No.11
Static flow instability of a once-through steam generator (OTSG) with a modular feedwater line is an instability related to the change of a flow direction in individual steam generating U-shaped channels operating at a given pressure difference. The nature of the static instability is close to a Ledinegg instability [1] related to the presence of multiple flows at the full hydraulic curve of a U-shaped channel. In this paper, the conditions for a reverse flow for the OTSG with a U-shaped modular feedwater line (MFL) are studied. From the results of the studies, it is revealed that the change of a flow direction in the MFL is due to a boiling of the feedwater in the downcomer branch of the U-shaped MFL and that multiple flows start in an area of the extremes corresponding to the minimum pressure difference of the hydraulic curves. Calculation models for predicting a threshold of a static instability for the OTSG of interest is proposed and the analysis results are compared with the experimental data.
Minipigs as Laboratory Animals: Facility Management and Husbandry
Koo, Ok-Jae,Jang, Goo,Lee, Byeong-Chun The Korean Society of Animal Reproduction 2012 Reproductive & developmental biology Vol.36 No.1
Minipigs are regarded as one of the most important laboratory animal in that anatomical and physiological properties are similar to human and their reproduction efficiency is relatively higher compared to other large animal species. Particularly, several diseases that cannot be mimicked in rodent models are successfully occurred or induced in pig models therefore it has been interested in a valuable model for human diseases. Pigs are also 'standard' species in xenotransplantation research. To maximize experimental outcome using minipigs, establishment and management of proper animal facility, right animal husbandry and control of pathogens are very important. In this review, we summarized several international guidelines related with minipigs published by several companies or governments and discuss optimal conditions for providing informative ideas to the researchers who want to use minipigs in their future studies.

The noise performance of 0.15 m GaAs power metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (MHEMT) devices with a double-doped In0:52Al0:48As/In0:53Ga0:47As structure has been investigated together with the DC and microwave characteristics. The 0.15 100 m2 MHEMT device shows a high gate-to-drain breakdown voltage of ..8.3 V, an extrinsic transconductance of 740 mS/mm, and a threshold voltage of ..0.97 V. The obtained cut-o frequency and maximum frequency of oscillation are 133 GHz and 235 GHz, respectively. A very low minimum noise gure of 1.11 dB and an associated gain of 9.51 dB at 30 GHz are obtained for the power MHEMT with an In content of 53 % in the InGaAs channel. This excellent noise characteristic is attributed to a drastic reduction in the gate resistance by the T-shaped gate with a wide head and to the improved device performance.

This study was conducted to evaluate nutritional status of school children by biochemical assessment method. Subjects were 308 school children from 4th to 6th grade living in Bucheon city. Their blood glucose, total protein, albumin, total cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) concentrations were determined. Mean blood glucose concentration was 77.56 mg/dl and $81.2\%$ of children had normal blood glucose concentration. The average proportion of hypoglycemia was $18.8\%$ among the three grades and prevalence of hypoglycemia in 4th grade school children was highest ($21.8\%$). Mean serum total protein and albumin levels were 7.14g/dl and 4.35g/dl, respectively, and all the subjects except only one were in normal range of total protein and albumin. Mean serum TG and total cholesterol concentrations were 145.82mg/dl and 94.50mg/dl. Serum TG and total cholesterol levels showed same pattern that the concentrations decreased in proportion to grade. Especially, there was significant difference between grades in serum total cholesterol. Furthermore, $11.7\%$ of 4th, $6.8\%$ of 5th, and $2.8\%$ of 6th grade school children have borderline hypertriglycemia or hypertriglycemia, risk factors of obesity or cardiovascular disease later in life. Taken together, there was conflict phenomenon that undernutrition of hypertriglycemia and overnutrition of hypertriglycemia existed together. Therefore, it is needed to develop discriminating and personalized nutritional feeding, counseling, and education program to cover the children of under- or over- nutritional status.

Koo, Ok-Jae,Hong, So-Gun,Kang, Jung-Taek,Park, Jung-Eun,Kim, Min-Jung,Jang, Goo,Lee, Byeong-Chun 韓國受精卵移植學會 2011 한국동물생명공학회지 Vol.26 No.4
Canine pyometra generally occurs in intact female dogs of more than four years of age. However, in rarely cases, pyometra can occur in young bitches. In the present report, two cases of pyometra in thirteen and eighteen months of age were presented. In both cases, absent of vaginal discharge represented that both patients had closed-cervix pyometra and diagnosis was somewhat complicated. In complete blood count, elevated level of leukocyte with left shift was found in both cases. Serum chemistry analysis showed elevation of alkaline phosphatase in both cases. Additionally, mild elevation of aspartate transferase and total protein were also found in case. Radiographic and ultrasonographic findings show the enlargement of uterus and accumulation of fluid contents inside the uterine lumen. Ovariohysterectomy followed by antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for post-surgery medication was performed for treatment. After a week, both patients fully recovered. To reduce mortality of pyometra in young intact female dogs, radiography or ultrasonography should be indicated immediately in the bitches showing severe infectious inflammation.

Background/Aims: Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) inhibit activated hepatic stellate cell contraction and are thought to reduce the dynamic portion of intrahepatic resistance. This study compared the effects of combined treatment using the ARB candesartan and propranolol versus propranolol monotherapy on portal pressure in patients with cirrhosis in a prospective, randomized controlled trial. Methods: Between January 2008 and July 2009, 53 cirrhotic patients with clinically significant portal hypertension were randomized to receive either candesartan and propranolol combination therapy (26 patients) or propranolol monotherapy (27 patients). Before and 3 months after the administration of the planned medication, the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) was assessed in both groups. The dose of propranolol was subsequently increased from 20 mg bid until the target heart rate was reached, and the candesartan dose was fixed at 8 mg qd. The primary endpoint was the HVPG response rate; patients with an HVPG reduction of >20% of the baseline value or to <12 mmHg were defined as responders. Results: The mean portal pressure declined significantly in both groups, from 16 mmHg (range, 12.28 mmHg) to 13.5 mmHg (range, 6.20 mmHg) in the combination group (P<0.05), and from 17 mmHg (range, 12.27 mmHg) to 14 mmHg (range, 7.25 mmHg) in the propranolol monotherapy group (P<0.05). However, the medication-induced pressure reduction did not differ significantly between the two groups [3.5 mmHg (range, -3.11 mmHg) vs. 3 mmHg (range, -8.10 mmHg), P=0.674]. The response rate (55.6% vs. 61.5%, P=0.435) and the reductions in mean blood pressure or heart rate also did not differ significantly between the combination and monotherapy groups. Conclusions: The addition of candesartan (an ARB) to propranolol confers no benefit relative to classical propranolol monotherapy for the treatment of portal hypertension, and is thus not recommended. To facilitate the construction of genetically-modified pigs, we produced cloned embryos derived from porcine fibroblasts transfected with a pair of engineered zinc finger nuclease (ZFN) plasmids to create targeted mutations and enriched using a reporter plasmid system. The reporter expresses RFP and eGFP simultaneously when ZFN-mediated site-specific mutations occur. Thus, double positive cells ($RFP^+/eGFP^+$) were selected and used for somatic cell nuclear transfer. Two types of reporter based enrichment systems were used in this study; the cloned embryos derived from cells enriched using a magnetic sorting-based system showed better developmental competence than did those derived from cells enriched by flow cytometry. Mutated sequences, such as insertions, deletions, or substitutions, together with the wild-type sequence, were found in the cloned porcine blastocysts. Therefore, genetic mutations can be achieved in cloned porcine embryos reconstructed with ZFN-treated cells that were enriched by a reporter-based system.
