An Overview: American Television Series as Authentic Resources for English Language Development

        Kimball,Tia 영상영어교육학회 2018 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.19 No.2

How can English language learners (ELLs) increase their exposure to spoken English while studying English in their home country? How can they prepare themselves to understand spoken English while traveling abroad? What should EFL teachers do to encourage their students to practice listening outside of the classroom? American television series (AMTVS) are a popular medium of studying English for ELLs worldwide due to their perceived authenticity. AMTVS are more accessible now with the advent of Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube. Instructors worldwide use AMTVS in the classroom to increase engagement and expose their students to a variety of linguistic features in English. The use of closed-captions increases ELLs’ vocabulary, and improves their informal, figurative, and formulaic language acquisition as well as their listening and reading comprehension. Teachers can incorporate AMTVS into their listening instruction to expose ELLs in EFL settings to a variety of language conventions such as grammar, reduced speech, contractions, and various accents. This paper provides an overview of the variety of teaching points that instructors of ELLS can integrate into their classrooms for more context-based and enriched instruction. The linguistic challenges that educators must consider are discussed. This article concludes with the myriad of teaching and learning opportunities available that can help ELLs’ English language development.

      • Copper(Ⅰ) Complexes of 3,3'-Bridged 2,2'-Biquinoline-Synthesis, Properties, and Structure

        Jahng, Yurngdong,Hazelrigg, John,Kimball, David,Riesgo, Elvira,Wu, Feiyue,Thummel, Randolph P. 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 1998 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 연구업적집 Vol.8 No.-

A series of 3, 3'-bridged derivatives of 2, 2'-biquinoline have been prepared where the bridge consists of one to four methylene units or a -CH=CH- moiety. The corresponding [CuL₂](ClO₄) complexes were also prepared and their structures analyzed and confirmed by ¹H NMR. Electronic absorption maxima for the metal-to-ligand transition were found to move to higher energy and oxidation potentials were found to increase as the ligands became more distorted from planarity. An X-ray analysis was carried out for the most distorted systcm having a 3, 3'-tetramethylene bridge (C_(44)H_(36)BCuF₄N₄: triclinic, P??, a = 11.605(2) Å, b = 12.622(3) Å, c = 14.524(3) Å, α = 106.05(1)˚, β = 109.06(1)˚, r = 105.37(1)˚, V = 1778 ų, Z = 2). A wide variation in Cu-N bond lengths, 1.98-2.23 Å, was observed, and the two more weakly complexed quinolines were seen to be arranged in an almost parallel fashion. Ligand exchange studies with neocuproine indicated that the strength of Cu(I) binding depends on the planarity of the system as well as the cisoid disposition of the quinoline nitrogens.

Effects of virtual reality exercise for Korean adults with schizophrenia in a closed ward

        Garam Jo,Brenda Rossow-Kimball,Gwitaek Park,Yongho Lee 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of virtual reality exercise (VRE) using Nintendo Wii-Fit on physical fitness of Korean adults with schizophrenia living in a mental health facility located in South Korea. Two male participants diagnosed with schizophrenia, ages 53 and 61, were recruited and selected for inclusion in this study. The intervention using the Nintendo Wii-Fit consisted of 35-min ses-sions, 3 times per week for 8 weeks and was facilitated by the primary researcher and two graduate students. The senior fitness test and 10-m walking test were used to measure the physical functioning, specifical-ly, physical fitness and mobility, of the participants. The study was divid-ed into three phases using an A-B-A single-subject design and involved multiple repeated measures of functional physical fitness. Both partici-pants were evaluated each week for the duration of 18 weeks. Both participants exhibited measureable improvement in some of the physi-cal fitness measures, but not in the mobility. These results thus provide preliminary evidence to support the use of VRE to improve physical function for Korean adults with schizophrenia as an alternative exercise regimen to the conventional exercise.

RADIO JET FEEDBACK AND STAR FORMATION IN HEAVILY OBSCURED, HYPERLUMINOUS QUASARS AT REDSHIFTS ∼ 0.5-3. I. ALMA OBSERVATIONS

        Lonsdale, Carol J.,Lacy, M.,Kimball, A. E.,Blain, A.,Whittle, M.,Wilkes, B.,Stern, D.,Condon, J.,Kim, M.,Assef, R. J.,Tsai, C.-W.,Efstathiou, A.,Jones, S.,Eisenhardt, P.,Bridge, C.,Wu, J.,Lonsdale, Co IOP Publishing 2015 The Astrophysical journal Vol.813 No.1

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 870 mu m (345 GHz) data for 49 high-redshift (0.47 < z < 2.85), luminous (11.7 < log(L-bol/L-circle dot) < 14.2) radio-powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs), obtained to constrain cool dust emission from starbursts concurrent with highly obscured radiative-mode black hole (BH) accretion in massive galaxies that possess a small radio jet. The sample was selected from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer with extremely steep (red) mid-infrared colors and with compact radio emission from NVSS/FIRST. Twenty-six sources are detected at 870 mu m, and we find that the sample has large mid- to far-infrared luminosity ratios, consistent with a dominant and highly obscured quasar. The rest-frame 3 GHz radio powers are 24.7 < log P-3.0 GHz/W Hz(-1)) < 27.3, and all sources are radio-intermediate or radio-loud. BH mass estimates are 7.7 < log(M-BH/M-circle dot) < 10.2. The rest-frame 1-5 mu m spectral energy distributions are very similar to the 'Hot DOGs' (hot dust-obscured galaxies), and steeper (redder) than almost any other known extragalactic sources. ISM masses estimated for the ALMA-detected sources are 9.9 < log (M-ISM/M-circle dot) < 11.75 assuming a dust temperature of 30 K. The cool dust emission is consistent with star formation rates reaching several thousand M-circle dot yr(-1), depending on the assumed dust temperature, but we cannot rule out the alternative that the AGN powers all the emission in some cases. Our best constrained source has radiative transfer solutions with approximately equal contributions from an obscured AGN and a young (10-15 Myr) compact starburst.

DUST-OBSCURED RADIO AGNS FROM THE WISE SURVEY

        Kim, Minjin,Lonsdale, Carol J.,Lacy, Mark,Kimball, Amy,Condon, Jim The Korean Astronomical Society 2012 天文學論叢 Vol.27 No.4

Feedback from accreting BH (AGN) is thought to be responsible for the co-evolution of BHs and galaxies. It is likely to be prominent in the most luminous dust-obscured quasars, particularly those containing radio sources too luminous to be powered by starbursts. In order to investigate the feedback mechanism in detail, we select a unique sample containing ~ 200 of the most luminous obscured QSOs by cross-matching the WISE catalog with the FIRST and NVSS radio surveys. We present overall statistics for the observed range of colors and radio/mid-IR flux density ratio. We also present our efforts to understand the physical and evolutionary nature of these extreme feedback candidates using various telescopes such as Magellan, SOAR, Herschel, and ALMA.

      • Design of a 4-W Envelope Tracking Power Amplifier With More Than One Octave Carrier Bandwidth

        Yan, J. J.,Chin Hsia,Kimball, D. F.,Asbeck, P. M. IEEE 2012 IEEE journal of solid-state circuits Vol.47 No.10

This paper presents a high-efficiency broadband envelope-tracking power amplifier with operation at carrier frequencies from 500 to 1750 MHz. The RF power amplifier (RFPA) is provided by a single-chip gallium-nitride (GaN) integrated circuit (IC) whose design included a broadband output match achieved by operating directly into a load resistance of 50 Ω and broadband input match achieved using a feedback network. Under single-tone excitation, the Class-AB GaN PA IC provides output power above 12 W with greater than 50% drain efficiency and more than 10-dB gain at 40-V drain bias. When placed in envelope tracking configuration, using a representative WCDMA modulated signal with 4-MHz bandwidth and 6.6-dB peak-to-average power ratio, the ET PA achieved 4 W of average output power at its peak average drain efficiency of 31% at 752 MHz (including the power dissipation of the envelope modulator). The RFPA individually was measured to have an average drain efficiency of 58.5% for the WCDMA signal. Across the 500-1750-MHz band, using the WCDMA signal, greater than 25% average drain efficiency with more than 10 dB of gain was measured.

      • Effects of Therapeutic Strengthening Exercises and Postural Modification in Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain and Disability

        Kyung-Mo Han,Maria B. Kimball 한국체육학회 2008 International journal of human movement science Vol.2 No.2

Disorders of the spine are costly and prevalent, and treatment can be difficult. The primary goal of therapeutic intervention for back and neck pain is to reduce pain and improve functional ability. Correcting faulty posture through exercise is one of many treatment approaches for decreasing symptoms of back pain, yet research is lacking to validate the effectiveness of such treatment. To justify the clinical use of postural correction and exercises commonly used to treat back pain, research must demonstrate a positive relationship between postural interventions and improvement of the patients’ pain and disability. The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the Pneu-BackTM treatment protocol with therapeutic exercise to therapeutic exercise alone on back pain and disability, and posture. The independent variable is treatment (Pneu-BackTM treatment protocol with therapeutic exercise verses therapeutic exercise verses no treatment) and dependent variables are pain, disability, and posture. Sixty-four people with chronic back or neck pain (more than 3 months) were randomly assigned to three groups: Group 1 received the Pneu-BackTM treatment protocol; Group 2 received instruction and supervision in back and neck exercises and posture modification; and Group 3 received no intervention of any kind. Pain, disability and posture were measured pre, mid, and post intervention. Random coefficient growth curves were used to determine differences between groups. Subjects in the treatment groups significantly improved in pain and disability scores compared to the control group (p<.0001), but there was no difference in improvement between the treatment groups. The addition on the Pneu-BackTM chair exercise had no additional effect on treatment outcomes. There were no consistent trends in posture changes among the groups.
