Medullary thyroid carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma are different subtypes of thyroid carcinoma. The concomitant occurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma and papil-lary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor is rare. We describe five cases of medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor. Four women and one man underwent thyroidectomy for treatment of thyroid cancer. Collision tumor was then detected by histopathologic finding. Genetic testing, point mutation of the BRAF gene or mutation of the RET gene was performed in three cases. However, only one case had point mutation of the BRAF gene. Exact diagnosis of this uncommon event is important because the strategies for treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma are different.

Inflammation or hypoxia in gingival tissue can induce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which is related with autophagy. The autophagy is a catabolic process involving the degradation of a cell's own components. Although autophagy resulting in the total destruction of the cell is one of cell death types, no conclusive evidence exists for such a process. In order to examine the association of ER stress and autophagy in gingival system, ER stress agents brefeldin A, thapsigargin, and tunicamycin were exposed to human gingival cells. The ER stress agents induced cell death and the expression of ER stress proteins, glucose-regulated protein of 78 kDa (GRP78) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) homologous protein (CHOP). ER stress also increased the formation of autophagic vesicles with the expression of beclin and LC-3 (microtubule-associated protein1 light chain 3) II, two autophagic markers. ER stress induced the phosphorylation of p38MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase), and the p38MPAK inhibitor, SB203580, inhibited the resulting cell death and autophagy. In summary, ER stress induces cell death and autophagy through p38MAPK in human gingival cells.

Deposition of hard coatings on polycarbonate substrate by high frequency ion beam
Sung-Ryong Kim,Jun-Seob Song,Young-Joon Choi,Jong-Hun Kim 한국진공학회(ASCT) 1998 Journal of Korean Vacuum Science & Technology Vol.2 No.2
The poor wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate have limited its application in many fields. In order to improve the wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate we have deposited diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings. The diamond like carbon coatings were made using a high frequency ion beam gun by introducing H₂ and CH₄ gases. The coatings were characterized with Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, ellipsometer, microscratch tester and hazemeter. Polymeric hard coating was applied onto the polycarbonate substrate before depositing a DLC coating to investigate the effect of interlayer on the system′s failure mode.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro osteogenic effects and in vivo new bone formation of three-dimensional (3D) printed alendronate (Aln)-releasing poly(caprolactone) (PCL) (Aln/PCL) scaffolds in rat tibial defect models. 3D printed Aln/PCL scaffolds were fabricated via layer-by-layer deposition. The fabricated Aln/PCL scaffolds had high porosity and an interconnected pore structure and showed sustained Aln release. In vitro studies showed that MG-63 cells seeded on the Aln/PCL scaffolds displayed increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and calcium content in a dose-dependent manner when compared with cell cultures in PCL scaffolds. In addition, in vivo animal studies and histologic evaluation showed that Aln/PCL scaffolds implanted in a rat tibial defect model markedly increased new bone formation and mineralized bone tissues in a dose-dependent manner compared to PCL-only scaffolds. Our results show that 3D printed Aln/PCL scaffolds are promising templates for bone tissue engineering applications.

A new gerbera variety ‘Claret’ was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2006. A cross was made between ‘Rako’ with pink and semi-double and ‘Sessile’ with orange and single in 2000. After investigation of the characteristics for 6 years (from 2000 to 2006), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. ‘Claret’ is vigorous cultivar with purple and semi-double. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height and brilliant color. We believe that ‘Claret’ has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic mini-gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income. Fabrication of pseudo-crystal nanostructures of TiO2 particles under UV-irradiation.

Colloidal titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions were synthesized by hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide in the presence of acetic acid. When TiO2 colloids were subjected to bandgap excitation (ultraviolet [UV] irradiation), the colloidal solution exhibited yellow coloration, leading to the trapping of holes and electrons on the particle surfaces. The absorption spectra indicated a distinct absorption band in the UV and visible region. Dried-drop film of the UV-irradiated TiO2 suspension on the mica surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM images showed that 'crystal-like' network structures of TiO2 nanoparticles had formed dramatically on the solid surface. The resulting networks ranged in size from 100 nm to 500 nm and had crystal-growth patterns, while also having almost similar rectangular shapes. It seems that the individual particles, with electron or hole scavengers such as oxygen in ambient conditions, make contact with a number of neighbors, thereby forming self-assembled three-dimensional nanoparticle-based pseudo-crystalline structures.

Purpose: The anticancer property and cytoprotective role of selenium in chemotherapy have been reported. However, the combination effects of selenium on chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer have not yet been clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effects of selenium on chemotherapy using docetaxel on breast cancer cell lines. Methods: Under adherent culture conditions, two breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, were treated with docetaxel at 500pM and selenium at 100nM, 1μM, or 10μM. Changes in cell growth, cell cycle duration, and degree of apoptosis after 72 hours in each treated group were evaluated. Results: In the MDA-MB-231 cells, the combination therapy group (docetaxel at 500pM plus selenium at 10mM) showed a significantly decreased percentage of cell growth (15% vs. 28%; P = 0.004), a significantly increased percentage of late apoptosis (63% vs. 26%; P = 0.001), and an increased cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase (P = 0.001) compared with the solitary docetaxel therapy group. Isobologram analysis demonstrated the synergistic effect of the combination therapy in the MDA-MB-231 cells. However, in the MCF-7 cells, no significant differences in the percentage of cell growth apoptosis, the percentage of apoptosis, and the pattern of cell cycle arrest were noted between the combination therapy groups and the solitary docetaxel therapy group. Conclusion: Our in vitro study indicated that the combination of selenium with docetaxel inhibits cell proliferation through apoptosis and cell arrest in the G2/M phase in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.
