「문화연구」를 통한 문학연구의 확장 가능성에 대한 고찰

김성곤 서울大學校 人文學硏究所 1997 人文論叢 Vol.37 No.-

Established in higher education as a dominant discourse, literary study has exercised a powerful hegemony in the academy since the early twentieth century. It proclaimed that it could provide the core for a modern education in the humanities by practicing the old ideal of humanist education, that is to say, producing a gentleman and a scholar in a Christian society. In the meantime, the institution of literary study has rested on an relatively secure and unchallenged foundation of literary canon and highbrow culture of the elite. Recently, however, literary study as a privileged canon was challenged, fell into crisis, and finally collapsed. And it is now being transformed into the so-called broader Cultural Studies which incorporates both canonical literary texts and non-canonical cultural texts. Cultural studies suggests that literary study embrace popular culture, such as film, television, video, advertizing, pop songs, comics, and popular novels, all of which as a social document faithfully registers the Zeitgeist of the times and permeates everyday experience and life. As a result, the distinction between canonical texts and non-canonical ones became eroded. As the binary opposition between high and popular culture on which literary study is founded becomes under attack, Cultural Studies steps aside from elite literature and includes the texts of everyday life in its object of study, considerably broadening the horizon of the field of literary study. In the past, literary study dismissed popular texts as something that seriously lacks imagination and unity. Cultural Studies argues, however, that it is also possible to apply a system of 'deep' or 'close' reading previously practised only on canonical texts to popular non-canonical texts. Cultural Studies thus opens up a whole new possibility for studying and teaching literature and culture, even though it entails some unsolved methodological problems in practice. Opening up the canon by Cultural Studies seems to be inevitable in this age of popular culture and so does the collapse of the old paradigm of literary study based on the privileged center of canonical texts and highbrow literature. Cultural Studies, then, could be a new paradigm for the future of literary study, which would significantly enlarge the scope of literary study.

국내 영어교육의 문제점과 현장 실무영어의 오류들

        김성곤 서울대학교 어학연구소 1995 語學硏究 Vol.31 No.1

There has been a general consensus that Korean learners of English are not likely to acquire a communicative command of English even after ten years of formal education in English as a foreign language. Three things are to blame for this unscrutable phenomenon that is uniquely Korean. First, the secondary school English teaching method which put disproportionate emphasis on grammar and translation is principally to blame. No one in Korea would deny that the current secondary school English instruction is problematic in many respects. English teachers, for instance, have only a minimal, if not inadequate, command of communicative English. And inevitably their poor command of English is bound to be passed on to their students. Second, the secondary school English testing system is to blame. These tests, ultimately aimed at helping the students prepare for college entrance exam, pay little attention to the testee's ability to communicate at natural speed in either spoken or written English. Rather, they concentrate on the testee's ability to translate word for word a limited amount of written English. Third, the secondary school English textbooks are to blame. These domestically produced English textbooks are plague by numerous erroneous English, either somewhat inappropriate or totally unacceptable. The problem is that these error-ridden samples of English inevitably infiltrate into the subterranean unconsciousness of Korean students who practice them, believing that their textbook are infallible and imperccable. And the result is the egrgious errors found on practical English everywhere in Korea today. In order to become a globally competitive country, therefore, Korea must reconsider her current English education system long cripped by inapproprite teaching materials and testing methods.

「미디어 문화연구」를 통한 미국연구 : 미국 영화와 텔레비전 드라마를 중심으로

        김성곤 서울대학교 국제지역원 2001 국제지역연구 Vol.10 No.3

For the past few decades, media culture has been the dominant form of culture which shapes us and provides materials for social reproduction and change. Media culture has also developed its unique methods and analyses of contemporary media texts such as film, television, pop music, advertisement, M-TV, and others to effectively explore their nature and effects. It even employs the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the Afghan War as cultural text reflecting contemporary American culture. Through studies of American film and television, this thesis argues that media and cultural studies can provide a series of new possibilities of illuminating the essence of contemporary American culture and society. Drawing on American media and cultural studies, this study attempts to examine the tensions that exist within the multifaceted and multicultural aspects of American life. Exploring the changing debates among the theories of media and cultural studies, special consideration is given to such controversial issues as race, ethnicity, gender, class and identity. For that purpose, this paper examines and reads a number of major American film texts, employing techniques and arguments both from British and American cultural studies, in order to establish what has been unique about the American experience. It is the primary aim of this paper to highlight American distinctiveness through examining various forms of cultural expression in relation to their social and political contexts in this age of media and cultural studies. By exploring and analyzing contemporary media culture, and by interpreting media-based America, this study finally attempts to answer the question, "What is America and what is American?"

        영어 원서강독과 읽기교육의 문제점

        김성곤 서울대학교 어학연구소 1997 語學硏究 Vol.33 No.1

Language is primarily an instrument whose purpose is to communicate between people. It is an endless dialogue with men and women, expressing a state of thinking, feeling and seeing things and people. Language unfolds itself through social situations and historical circumstances. Situation and language, which are closely linked with each other, are both perceived in their entirety, within mental structures so complex as to escape analysis. This is why we teach language as a means of expression and communication which engages all the resources and realities of human beings. And this is why we perceive language not as a fixed entity but as an essentially fiexible medium of social interaction. Language is, after all, an ever-changing means of expression of ourselves that cannot be analyzed, since analysis destroys the subtle mechanism of language by its very process. korean students, however, tend to attempt to analyze English sentences, passages, and paragraphs grammatically and pin down a fixed meaning of vocabulary, often ignoring the context from which they originated. Rather than trying to comprehend the general idea and meaning of a paragraph, they are inclined to tackle grammatical details and structural problems instead. And the result is often the frustration of slow reading and understanding. The English proficiency of Korean students-whether in speaking, listening, reading or writing-has been seriously plagued by this grammar overdose at school. In order to alter the course of grammar-oriented English education in Korea, the college entrance examination should focus more on oral proficiency and comprehension skills than on grammar itself.
