        Effect of Harvesting Frequency, Variety and Leaf Maturity on Nutrient Composition, Hydrogen Cyanide Content and Cassava Foliage Yield

        The experiment studied the effect of harvesting frequencies and varieties on yield, chemical composition and hydrogen cyanide content in cassava foliage. Foliage from three cassava varieties, K94 (very bitter), K98-7 (medium bitter) and a local (sweet), were harvested in three different cutting cycles, at 3, 6 and 9 months; 6 and 9 months and 9 months after planting, in a 2-yr experiment carried out in Hanoi, Vietnam. Increasing the harvesting frequency increased dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) production in cassava foliage. The K94 variety produced higher foliage yields than the other two varieties. Dry matter, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and total tannin content increased with months to the first harvest, whereas CP content decreased. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content was lower at the first harvest than at later harvests for all cutting cycles. At subsequent harvests the content of total tannins tended to decline, while HCN content increased (p<0.05). Chemical composition differed somewhat across varieties except for total tannins and ash. Dry matter, NDF, ADF and total tannins were higher in fully matured leaves, while CP and HCN were lower in developing leaves.

        Potential of using mineral oils for the control of the mosquito bugs Helopeltis theivora (Hemiptera: Miridae) in cashew plantations

        This study investigated the influence of an nC24 mineral oil (MO) on some biological characteristics of a mos quito bug, Helopeltis theivora, reared on cashew under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Aqueous emulsions of the oil were applied as sprays to eggs at four daily intervals after oviposition to assess impacts on egg hatch, and to cashew seedlings to assess adult longevity and female fecundity reared on the plants. Field applications were also carried out to assess the impacts of sprays on populations of the bug in a cashew orchard. The results of the laboratory study indicated that 1% (v/v) of the MO application reduced egg hatch when applied to eggs on cashew seedlings, in separate treatments, 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after oviposition (DAO). Egg mortality showed a negative linear correlation with egg maturity (DAO). The pre-oviposition period of adult females placed on sprayed cashew seedling, after deposits of 1% (v/v) sprays dried, was significantly prolonged. The longevity of males and females on dry oil-spray deposits was lower than on seedlings sprayed with water. The fecundity of females was also lower. Field sprays significantly reduced populations of the bug on mature cashew trees. Mixtures of MO and abamectin were more effective than oil alone. The results of the study indicate that mineral oils can be used to suppress populations of H. theivora in cashew plantations.

      • Investigation of flexural behavior of a prestressed girder for bridges using nonproprietary UHPC

        Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is recognized as a promising material in future civil engineering projects due to its outstanding mechanical and durability properties. However, the lack of local UHPC materials and official standards, especially for prestressed UHPC structures, has limited the application of UHPC. In this research, a large-scale prestressed bridge girder composed of nonproprietary UHPC is produced and investigated. This work has two objectives to develop the mixing procedure required to create UHPC in large batches and to study the flexural behavior of the prestressed girder. The results demonstrate that a sizeable batch of UHPC can be produced by using a conventional concrete mixing system at any precast factory. In addition, incorporating local aggregates and using conventional mixing systems enables regional widespread use. The flexural behavior of a girder made by this UHPC is investigated including flexural strength, cracking pattern and development, load-deflection curve, and strain and neutral axis behaviors through a comprehensive bending test. The experimental data is similar to the theoretical results from analytical methods based on several standards and recommendations of UHPC design.

        Factors Affecting Consumer’s Choice of Retail Store Chain: Empirical Evidence from Vietnam

        The study explores the factors affecting the brand selection behavior of retail chains in Vietnam and to what extent they have an impact on the customer’s choice intention. This research employs a combination of both qualitative and quantitative mixed methods with the help of SPSS version 22.0 in data analysis. Expert interviews are used to design the questionnaire for the survey conducted on 700 consumers. Research results show that the eight factors of store image (1-to-3 split factor of store image including the display of goods and services), price perception, risk perception, brand attitude, brand awareness, and brand familiarity were determined. They all influence the intention to choose the retail chain brand. With a positive β coefficient, the more store image, price perception, brand attitude, and brand awareness are enhanced, the more likely the intention to choose the retail chain brand. The factor of risk perception has negative β, resulting in an inverse impact on choosing a retail chain brand name. Price perception and risk perception have the strongest impact on retail chain decision behavior while commodity display factors the least. Based on these important results, the study proposes implications for retailers and manufacturers.
