Vol.19 No.8
This study is an experimental study to investigate the shear behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete deep beams with rectangular openings and presents an equation to determine the shear strength of those beams. Experimental parameters include shear span-to-overall depth ratio(a/h) as well as the width and depth of web opening. Test results indicate that the maximum crack width depended on shear span-to-overall depth ratio rather than size of web opening and the depth of opening had more influence on the shear strength of the beams than the width of opening. Based on Yang & Chung's equation which proposed to predict the shear strength of deep beams, an equation was established by the experimental results, fundamental theory of fracture mechanics, and multiple regression method. Through the comparison of experimental data and analytical results obtained from this and other studies, it was observed that the proposed equation properly estimates the ultimate shear strength of deep beams with rectangular openings.

Expression of Neurotrophic Factors and their Receptors in Keratoconic Cornea
Chung, Eui Sang,Lee, Kwang Hyun,Kim, Min,Chang, Eun Ju,Chung, Tae Young,Kim, Eung Kweon,Lee, Hyung Keun Informa Healthcare USA, Inc. 2013 Current eye research Vol.38 No.7
<P><I>Purpose</I>: To measure the expression level and pattern of neurotrophic factors and their receptors in keratoconus (KC) cornea using quantitative RT-PCR (qPCR) and immunostaining.</P><P><I>Materials and Methods</I>: Twenty-one recipient corneal buttons after keratoplasty from KC cornea and four age-matched normal corneas were obtained. The 25 corneal tissues were divided into two pieces; one fragment of each sample was used for immunostaining whereas the other fragment was used for qPCR. Using primary antibodies and specific qPCR primer, immunostaining and qPCR were performed to analyze the expression level of the neurotrophic factors and receptors.</P><P><I>Results</I>: Nerve growth factor and its receptors (TrkA and p75NTR) were not expressed in the center of normal cornea. However, TrkA and the p75NTR were clearly expressed in a membrane bound staining pattern and the mRNA levels were significantly higher in KC (<I>p</I> < 0.001). The mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and neurotrophin (NT)-4 mRNA was also elevated in KC (<I>p</I> < 0.001). BDNF was expressed in epithelium of normal cornea. However, in KC, its expression was found to be extending into the anterior stromal layer. CNTF was hardly expressed in normal cornea. In KC, the entire epithelium expressed CNTF, especially in perinuclear area. NT-4 was expressed throughout the epithelium and stroma in KC.</P><P><I>Conclusion</I>: The change in expression of neurotrophic factors in KC may suggest that these factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of KC and serve as new markers for the progression of KC.</P>

Nymphs of Cincticostella levanidovae (Tshernova), were collected from a headwater stream in Mt. Jumbong in the northern part of Korea. They showed a univoltine winter life cycle. The youngest nymphs were collected in July and the adults appeared to emerge from early April through June in next year. The cohort production interval for the species was estimated as 340 days. The annual secondary production (ash free dry weight) was estimated by the increment-summation method and the size-frequency method, being calculated as 488 and 708 mg·m-2·yr-1, respectively. Gut content analysis showed that C. levanidovae is a detritivore and could be categorized as a collector-gatherer.
Remarks on the Midway Conjunction Analysis of RNR Constructions
Keun Young Shin, Daeho Chung 한국생성문법학회 2011 생성문법연구 Vol.21 No.2
Park (2009, 2010) proposes a midway conjunction approach (MCA) to account for right node raising (RNR) constructions where an RNRed constituent is interpreted as the combination of two distinct elements, each associated with one of the conjunct clauses; these constructions pose a serious problem for the most popular RNR analyses such as ellipsis approaches and multiple dominance approaches. The MCA provides a unified analysis for different types of RNR constructions successfully to a certain degree, but it faces some non-trivial theoretical and empirical problems. This paper discusses these problems.

Chemical composition of nuts and seeds sold in Korea
Keun Hee Chung,Kyung Ok Shin,Hyo Jeong Hwang,Kyung-Soon Choi 한국영양학회 2013 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.7 No.2
Eleven types of nuts and seeds were analyzed to determine their energy (326-733 mg), moisture (1.6-18.3 mg), carbohydrate (8.8-70.9 mg), protein (4.9-30.5 mg), lipid (2.5-69.8 mg), and ash (1.2-5.5 mg) contents per 100 g of sample. Energy content was highest in pine nuts (733 mg/100 g), carbohydrate level was highest in dried figs (70.9 mg/100 g) and protein was highest in peanuts (30.5 mg/100 g). The amino acid compositions of nuts and seeds were characterized by the dominance of hydrophobic (range = 1,348.6-10,284.6 mg), hydrophilic (range = 341.1-3,244.3 mg), acidic (range = 956.1-8,426.5 mg), and basic (range = 408.6-4,738.5 mg) amino acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were highest in macadamia nuts (81.3%), whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were highest in the walnuts (76.7%). Macadamia nuts did not contain any vitamin E, whereas sunflower seeds contained the highest level (60.3 mg/kg). Iron (Fe) content was highest in pumpkin seeds (95.85±33.01 ppm), zinc (Zn) content was highest in pistachios (67.24±30.25 ppm), copper (Cu) content was greatest in walnuts (25.45±21.51 ppm), and lead (Pb) content was greatest in wheat nuts (25.49±4.64 ppm), significantly (P < 0.05). In conclusion, current commercial nuts and seeds have no safety concerns, although further analysis of Pb contents is necessary to ensure safety.
