Immune Response to COVID-19 Vaccination in Hematologic Malignancies: A Mini-Review

        Samaneh Keshavarz,Somayeh Keshavarz,Nasrin Ziamajidi,Sajedeh Daei 전남대학교 의과학연구소 2023 CMJ Vol.59 No.1

The outbreak of the COVID-19 infection has led to the rapidity of vaccine usage in recent years. Emerging data indicate that the efficacy of vaccination against COVID-19 was about 95% in the general population, though its impact is impaired in patients with hematologic malignancies. As such, we decided to research the publications in which the authors reported the impacts of COVID-19 vaccination in patients suffering from hematologic malignancies. We concluded that patients with hematologic malignancies have lower responses, antibody titers as well as an impaired humoral response following vaccination, notably in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and lymphoma. Furthermore, it seems that the status of treatment can significantly affect the responses to the COVID-19 vaccination.

Two New Correlations for Predicting Detonating Power of CHNO Explosives

Keshavarz, M.H.,Oftadeh, M. Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.1

For CHNO explosives, two new correlations of the form $P_{CJ}\;=\;8.7({\alpha}T_c')^{1/2}{\rho}_0^2-5\;and\;P_{CJ}\'=\'9.5({\alpha}T_c')^1/2{\rho}_0^2-9$ have been demonstrated, which relate detonation pressure, $P_{CJ}$; combustion temperature of the explosive in gas phase, $T_c$; combustion temperature of the explosive in crystalline state, $T_c'$; and the number of moles of gaseous products per unit weight of explosive, α; at initial density of the explosive, ${\rho}_0$. Experimental and semi-empirical PM3 procedures were used for the computation of $T_c$. Detonation pressures derived in this manner have a simple form without need to use computer code.

Perturbation analysis for spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks

Keshavarz, Hengameh,Hossain, Ekram,Noghanian, Sima,Dong In Kim IEEE 2010 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS Vol.9 No.5

<P>A primary ad-hoc network working in parallel with a secondary ad-hoc network is considered. The main challenge in operating cognitive ad-hoc networks is the lack of a centralized controller performing resource allocation for different users in the network. In this paper, a distributed power allocation scheme is considered for secondary users and its performance is analyzed when time average channel gains are substituted for instantaneous channel gains. In this way, it is not necessary to exchange instantaneous channel information; however, users' allocated power will be perturbed. It is of interest to analyze mathematically this perturbation and to show how it affects the network performance. In particular, an upper bound on perturbation of each user's allocated power, rate, and interference caused to a primary receivers by the secondary users is obtained. Then, it is shown that how this perturbation affects the transmission rate and the probability of interference constraint violation by the secondary users.</P>

Static and seismic active lateral earth pressure coefficients for c-ϕ soils

        Keshavarz, Amin,Pooresmaeil, Zahra Techno-Press 2016 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.10 No.5

In this paper, the active lateral earth pressure is evaluated using the stress characteristics or slip line method. The lateral earth pressure is expressed as the lateral earth pressure coefficients due to the surcharge, the unit weight and cohesion of the backfill soil. Seismic horizontal and vertical pseudo-static coefficients are used to consider the seismic effects. The equilibrium equations along the characteristics lines are solved by the finite difference method. The slope of the ground surface, the wall angle and the adhesion and friction angle of the soil-wall interface are also considered in the analysis. A computer code is provided for the analysis. The code is capable of solving the characteristics network, determining active lateral earth pressure distribution and calculating active lateral earth pressure coefficients. Closed-form solutions are provided for the lateral earth pressure coefficients due to the surcharge and cohesion. The results of this study have a good agreement with other reported results. The effects of the geometry of the retaining wall, the soil and soil-wall interface parameters are evaluated. Non-dimensional graphs are presented for the active lateral earth pressure coefficients.

The Role of Uniconazole in Improving Physiological and Biochemical Attributes of Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Subjected to Drought Stress

Keshavarz, Hamed,Ghorban Khodabin 한국작물학회 2019 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.22 No.2

Adverse environmental conditions such as drought are among the major factors limiting the growth and productivity of land plants. Plant growth regulators are defined as naturally occurring or synthetic compounds that affect the development or metabolism of higher plants, mostly in abiotic stress conditions. Two varieties of common bean, Talash (Sensitive) and Dehghan (Tolerant) were used to examine the influences of uniconazole on the photosynthetic traits, antioxidant activities, and morphological parameters of bean leaves and root under drought stress conditions. Results showed that drought stress considerably depressed the plant growth. However, the drought-stressed plants treated with uniconazole showed significantly higher biomass than in plants without uniconazole. Uniconazole treatments on Dehghan showed superior results to those on Talash. The leaves of uniconazole plants exhibited an increased leaf greenness content, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance but lower lipid peroxidation content and relative electrical conductivity compared to those of drought-stressed plants. Soluble sugar, soluble protein content, and the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase in the leaves were increased by uniconazole in drought stress and under well-watered conditions. Finally, the findings indicated that uniconazole can effectively alleviate the adverse effects caused by drought stress; these unwanted changes are partially attributable to the modifications in morphology and physiological characteristics resulting in yield increase in drought bean.

      • Passive Smoking and Attitudes towards Tobacco Control Programs among Iranian Dental Students

Keshavarz, Hooman,Jafari, Ahmad,Khami, Mohammad Reza,Virtanen, Jorma Ilmari Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: Conclusive evidence exists about associations between several life-threatening diseases and passive smoking. The objective of our study was to investigate the prevalence of passive smoking among Iranian dental students, to assess their attitudes towards tobacco control programs, and to explore the association between these two and tobacco use. Methods: In eight randomly selected dental schools, all fourth-year students were surveyed by means of a self-administered anonymous questionnaire in December 2010. The Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire served as the data collection instrument. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was assessed during the previous week. Chi-square test, logistic regression, and linear regression served for statistical analyses. Results: The response rate was 84% (325 students, 66% female). Exposure to ETS was reported by 74% of the participants. Men were significantly more exposed to ETS at home, and in other places than were women. Most of the students agreed on queried tobacco control policies. The lowest agreement (72%) was for banning smoking in coffee shops and teahouses. A logistic regression model showed that adjusted for gender, passive smoking at home is significantly associated with current tobacco use. A linear regression model suggested that the total score of attitudes is significantly associated with passive smoking at home, passive smoking in other places, tobacco use experience, and current tobacco use. Conclusions: The study reports high exposure to ETS among dental students, and its association with current tobacco use and attitudes towards tobacco control.

Hermeneutic Phenomenology in Supporting Research and Information Services: Contributions to Information Science

Keshavarz, Hamid Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2020 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.8 No.4

The diverse set of phenomena, concepts, and activities existing in academic disciplines could be studied from multiple perspectives. One of the promising approaches to explore phenomena is hermeneutics, especially in the form of hermeneutic phenomenology, which has been formed as a consequence of postmodern movements. Hermeneutic phenomenology has taken root in the original ideas of philosophers like Husserl, Heidegger, and Gadamer, and has become one of the fruitful research methodologies over time. After a brief review of the foundations of hermeneutic and phenomenological methodologies, the role of the hermeneutic phenomenology approach in supporting research and information services is discussed. The present article seeks to describe narratively the use of hermeneutic phenomenology in such issues as information technology, information behavior, knowledge organization, and librarians' roles as related to Information Science.

      • The characterization and RNAi-based functional analysis of transcription factor, Tm Dorsal2 in Tenebrio molitor

        Maryam Keshavarz,Yong Hun JO,Ki Beom PARK,Hye Jin KO,Chang Eun KIM,Jun Ho CHO,In-Seok BANG,Yong Seok LEE,Yeon Soo HAN 한국응용곤충학회 2018 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.10

Host defense against pathogen invasion highly relies on immune defense machinery that is controlled by the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) of transcription factors. The Toll pathway are well known as an insect innate immune mechanism to protect host itself from invaded pathogens. Basically, in the edible insect, Tenebrio molitor, the Toll pathway is primarily activated by polymeric Lys-type peptidoglycans (PGNs), and components of fungal cell walls, β-1,3-glucan. Based on the current studies, the tremendous study has been focused on recognition and subsequent activation of spätzle in haemolymph, hence, there is a grave gap for intracellular event. Herein, in order to understand intracellular event of Toll signaling pathway, the Dorsal gene were identified. Moreover, domain analyses of TmDorsal2 gene indicate that there are two major domains such as Rel homology domain (RHD), ig-like, plexins, and transcription factors (IPT) domains. Based on the achieved results, TmDorsal2 mRNA was highly expressed in 1-day old pupa. Furthermore, TmDorsal2 was highly expressed in Malpighian tubules and fat body in last instar larvae (LL), and likewise mainly expressed in Malpighian tubules during adult 5-day old period, also the lowest expression of TmDorsal2 was observed in gonads. Moreover, TmDorsal2 mRNA levels after infection with E. coli appreciably went up at 6 and 9h time points. To investigate the effects of TmDorsal2 RNAi on larval susceptibility against various pathogens namely E. coli, S. aureus or C.albicans, dsRNA of TmDorsal2 has been synthesized the larvae dissected after 24h. As a result, TmAttacin1a, 1b and 2, TmDefencine1 and 2, TmTenecin1, 2, 3 and 4, TmCecropin2, TmColeoptericin1 and 2, Thaumatin-like protein 1 and 2 markedly reduced in the gut after injecting all mentioned microbes. In contrast, TmTenecin 2, Thaumatin-like protein 1 and 2 strikingly increased after microbe injection in the fat body. Interestingly, the most AMPs gene expression in whole body experimental case were upregulated. On the horizon, we will investigate effects of TmDorsal1 RNAi on larval susceptibility against various pathogens. Taken together, our studies may aid to understand insect innate immunity.

A Robust Solution to Resource-Constraint Project Scheduling Problem

Milad Keshavarz Kord Mahalleh,Behzad Ashjari,Fereshteh Yousefi,Morteza Saberi 한국지능시스템학회 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of FUZZY LOGIC and INTELLIGE Vol.17 No.3

This paper aims to propose a solution to the resource-constraint project scheduling problem (RCPSP). RCPSP is a significant scheduling problem in project management. Currently, there are insufficient studies dealing with the robustness of RCPSP. This paper improves the robustness of RCPSP and develops a Robust RCPSP, namely RRCSP. RRCSP is structured with relaxing a fundamental assumption that is ‘the tasks start on time as planned’. Relaxing this assumption makes the model more realistic. The proposed solution minimizes the makespan while maximizing the robustness. Maximizing the robustness requires maximizing floating time of activities (it is NP hard). This creates more stability in the project finishing time. RCPSP stands as the root cause of many other problems such as multi-mode resourceconstrained project scheduling problems (MRCPSP), multi-skill resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MSRCPSP), or similar problems and hence proposing a solution to this problem contributes to pave a new line for future research in other mentioned areas. The applicability of the proposed model is examined through a numerical example.
