Myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) is a group of acquired conditions characterized by progressive bone marrow failure associated with normocellular or hypercellular bone marrow that cannot be attributed to nutritional deficiency, chronic infection, or other chronic systemic illness, and cannot be reversed by the successful treatment of those conditions. Whereas the cases of secondary MDS occur at all ages, primary MDS is essentially a disease of elderly, though no age group is exempt and predomonant in men. The MDS is fundamentally clonal disorders at the level of the haemopoietic totipotent stem cell. Clinically, they are characterized by varing degrees of peripheral cytopenia(s) with morphological and functional abnormalities of blood elements. We have experienced two unrelated pediatric cases, who showed pancytopenia on admission and the characteristic marrow findings of MDS. The first case, a 12 months-old girl, showed increased reticulin with abnormal localization of immature precursor cells(ALIP) in her bone marrow, in addition to dysplastic features such as bi-and multi-nucleation of late normoblasts and internuclear bridging. She also showed 22% of blasts in her bone marrow cells thus classified in the category of RAEB-t after FAB classification. Also found were a chromosomal abnormality namely 46 XX t(14q21q), which was an unusual one. Her family brought her home and, 4 month later, she deceased. The second case, a 12 year-old boy, showed pancytopenia with Pseudo-Pelger-Huet anomaly in neutrophils but no blasts in the peripheral blood. Bone marrow of this case also showed the picture of dyserythropoiesis with binuclearity, internuclear bridging, nuclear fragments, multinuclearity of late normoblasts, in addition to megaloblastoid change in the normoblasts and increased mitosis in granulocytic series. No chromosomal abnormality was found. Classified as RA after FAB classification of MDS. Showed good response to conservative management for anemia for more than one year.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Sulfonated poly(sulfide sulfone imide) copolymers containing flexible sulfide bond and six-membered imide ring were synthesized by random polycondensation. Two types of membranes were prepared by using sulfide (S-PSI) and sulfide sulfone (S-PSFI) based non-sulfonated diamines to investigate the effects of the hydrophobic component. IECw values were controlled to 1.51−1.94 meq g−1 depending on the degree of sulfonation (DS) which was in the range of 50–80%. The membrane series showed good thermal stability up to 310 °C and mechanical properties (tensile strength >30 MPa). Dimensional stabilities were excellent with 23−35% increases, even at 100 °C. Proton conductivities of membranes composed of different hydrophobic diamines display a relatively good correlation with water content and morphology. In fuel cell tests, the S-PSI60 membrane shows relatively high current density of 250 mA cm−2 at 0.6 V and maximum power density of 175 mW cm−2 at 120 °C, 35% RH, 1.5 atm.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The S-PSI60 having 8 nm sized ionic clustered morphology showed 250 mA cm−2 of current density at 0.6 V and 175 mW cm−2 of maximum power density at 120 °C, 35% RH, 1.5 atm.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>This study was conducted to investigate the associations between polymorphisms of genes involved in the LKB1 pathway and the prognosis of patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after surgical resection. Twenty‐three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the LKB1 pathway were investigated in 782 patients with NSCLC who underwent curative surgery. The association of SNPs with overall survival (OS) and disease‐free survival (DFS) were analyzed. Among the 23 SNPs investigated, <I>TSC2</I> rs30259G > A was associated with significantly worse OS and DFS (adjusted hazard ratio for OS 1.88, 95% confidence interval 1.21–2.91, <I>P</I> = 0.005; adjusted hazard ratio for DFS 1.65, 95% confidence interval 1.15–2.38, <I>P</I> = 0.01, under codominant models, respectively). Subgroup analysis showed that SNPs were significantly associated with survival outcomes in squamous cell carcinoma, ever‐smokers, and stage I, but not in adenocarcinoma, never‐smokers, and stage II–IIIA. The results suggest that <I>TSC2</I> rs30259G > A may be useful to predict prognosis in patients with NSCLC, especially squamous cell carcinoma, after curative surgery.</P>

Lee, Kee Hyuck,Kim, Ju Young,Lee, Kiheon,Cho, Belong,Yang, Jeong Hee,Goh, Eurah,Bae, Woo Kyung The Korean Academy of Family Medicine 2011 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.32 No.5
<P>Attending conferences is important for doctors and residents in family medicine. Nevertheless, departments of family medicine at many hospitals find it difficult to hold regular conferences. Holding joint videoconferences between Family Medicine Departments of several hospitals through a videoconferencing system could solve this problem. Therefore, Family Medicine Departments of Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, and Kangwon National University Hospital decided to hold regular joint videoconferences via a videoconferencing system. Eighty-one joint videoconferences were held from April 1 to October 29, 2010. PowerPoint slideshows were transferred to the other two locations in the same resolution as presenter's monitor. Image and voice of the speaker were transferred in real time and in acceptable quality. Joint videoconferences are feasible, satisfactory and useful for medical education, especially when individual family medicine departments are small and lack resources to hold face-to-face conferences. We expect that more family medicine departments will choose to participate in implementing similar joint videoconferencing systems in the future.</P>

Lee, Jiwon M.,Jung, Younghwa,Lee, Se Eun,Lee, Jun Ho,Kim, Kee Hyuck,Koo, Ja Wook,Park, Young Seo,Cheong, Hae Il,Ha, Il-Soo,Choi, Yong,Kang, Hee Gyung The Korean Pediatric Society 2013 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.56 No.7
Purpose: Recent studies have established the association between hypotonic fluids administration and hospital-acquired hyponatremia in children, and have contended that hypotonic fluids be removed from routine practice. To assess current intravenous fluid prescription practices among Korean pediatric residents and to call for updated clinical practice education Methods: A survey-based analysis was carried out. Pediatric residents at six university hospitals in Korea completed a survey consisting of four questions. Each question supposed a unique scenario in which the respondents were to prescribe either a hypotonic or an isotonic fluid for the patient. Results: Ninety-one responses were collected and analyzed. In three of the four scenarios, a significant majority prescribed the hypotonic fluids (98.9%, 85.7%, and 69.2%, respectively). Notably, 69.2% of the respondents selected the hypotonic fluids for postoperative management. Almost all (96.7%) selected the isotonic fluids for hydration therapy. Conclusion: In the given scenarios, the majority of Korean pediatric residents would prescribe a hypotonic fluid, except for initial hydration. The current state of pediatric fluid management, notably, heightens the risk of hospital-acquired hyponatremia. Updated clinical practice education on intravenous fluid prescription, therefore, is urgently required.

Driver Assistance System is widely under development to satisfy each safety issues including adaptive cruise control(ACC), forward vehicle collision warning system(FVCWS), pre-crash safety(PCS) and lane change aid. Low speed driver assistance system using low-cost sensors is more adopted due to it"s cost. This paper deals with low speed driver assistance system using short range sensors and a camera. A camera is used for lane deprature warning and forward collision warning. Blind spot detection uses two ultrasonic sensors and IR-based short range sensors are used for pre-crash safety and forward collision warning. Here, we developed an evaluation environment for low speed driver assistance system. That enables us to perform simulation and vehicle test synchronized in laboratory. Sensor simulation models are constructed in virtual driving environment and driver assistance system"s logic is prepared to perform integrated simulation using composed sensor model. Real sensors can be tested in real target connected to simulation.

Recently, many researches were performed to enhance fuel efficiency using GPS and ITS information. Green Drive means Driver Assistance System that use Map and Traffic information to drive a car in efficient and safe state. It consists of driver coaching system, energy management system and green routing. This paper deals with the evaluation environment of Green Drive System in simulated virtual driving environment. Main purpose of that is to quantitatively test green drive components in a point of view of fuel efficiency. We developed a DHIL(Driver Hardware-In-the-Loop) simulator that can be used in virtual driving and a HILS system to operate the DHIL simulator. Several scenarios of green driving are also described briefly.
