        Adult Intracranial Gliofibroma : A Case Report and Review of the Literature

        Gliofibroma is an extremely rare biphasic tumor with an astrocytic and benign mesenchymal component, which commonly occurs within the first two decades of life. The exact biological behavior of the tumor is not fully understood. Therefore, it is not listed as a distinct entity in the current World Health Organization classification of central nervous system tumors. Here, we describe a rare case of gliofibroma, which was located on the medial temporal lobe in a 61-year-old woman. Preoperatively, we misdiagnosed it as a meningioma because it was a well-demarcated and well-enhanced extra-axial mass with calcification and bony destruction. On the histopathological and immunohistochemical examination, the tumor consisted of a mixture of glial tissue and mesenchymal tissue and it was finally diagnosed as a gliofibroma. To our knowledge, this case of intracranial gliofibroma is in the oldest patient ever reported.

        Sclerosing Meningioma : Radiological and Clinical Characteristics of 21 Cases

        Objective : A rare subtype of meningioma, sclerosing meningioma is not included in the current World Health Organization classification of meningiomas and is classified into the category of other morphological variation subtypes. Sclerosing meningioma is often misdiagnosed to other non-benign meningioma or malignant neoplasm, so it is important to diagnose sclerosing type correctly. We analyzed the radiological and clinical characteristics of a series of sclerosing meningiomas. Methods : Twenty-one patients who underwent surgery in one institute with a histopathologically proven sclerosing meningioma were included from 2006 to 2014. Eighteen tumors were diagnosed as a pure sclerosing-type meningioma, and 3 as mixed type. Magnetic resonance image was taken for all patients including contrast enhancement image. Computed tomography (CT) scan was taken for 16 patients. One neuroradiologist and 1 neurosurgeon reviewed all images retrospectively. Results : In the all 16 patients with preoperative CT images, higher attenuation was observed in the meningioma than in the brain parenchyma, and calcification was observed in 11 (69%). In 15 of the 21 patients (71%), a distinctive very low signal intensity appeared as a dark color in T2-weighted images. Nine of these 15 tumors (60%) exhibited heterogeneous enhancement, and 6 (40%) exhibited homogeneous enhancement that was unlike the homogeneous enhancing pattern shown by conventional meningiomas. Ten patients had a clear tumor margin without peritumoral edema. Conclusion : Although these peculiar radiological characteristics are not unique to sclerosing meningioma, we believe that they are distinctive features that may be helpful for distinguishing sclerosing meningioma from other subtypes.

      • Effects of G₂102 for Life Prolongation of the Mouse Irradiated by Neutron (CF Source)

        흰쥐(mouse)에 5mrem/hr의 中性子線量을 隔日로 3分씩 照線하면서 人蔘의 alkaloid成分 主剃인 [G₂102]를 給與하였던 바, 다음과 같은 結果를 얻게 되었다. (1)흰쥐(mouse)(ICR系)에 있어서 中性子 被曝 半致夜線量은 LD?=3.75mrem이였는데 0.25mrem/日을 隔日로 照射함으로써 30日 以上 生存 시킬수 있었다. (2)庵쥐에 대하여는 中性子線의 有效한 作用과 [G₂102]와의 相合作用에 의해서 221.1%의 生命延長을 시킬 수가 있었다., (3)中性子線을 照射하기 前 35日 부터 [G₂102]를 投與한 被曝흰쥐는 100% 生存할 수가 있었다. (그림 3). 이때의 선량은 30일간에 4mrem으로 된다. (4)[G₂102]를 事前 20-25日에 먹은 쥐는 血淸中의 抵抗性蛋白인 ι-globulin의 含量과 血淸 의 含量이 회복되는 方向에서 호전현상을 보이고 있다. (5)血淸中 α-Lipoprotein의 低下와 Chylomicron增加現象으로 보아서 中性子被曝에 의해서 LPL(lipoprotein lipase)의 活性이 低下되는 狀態라고 보여진다. 그러나 [G₂102]의 效果가 이때에도 나타나고 있다. (6)中性子의 被害에 대하여 [G₂102]處理群은 淋巴球의 회복은 빠른것 같았지만, 中性球의 회복은 30日內에서는 안정되지 않았다. 5mrem/hr of neutron dose was irradiated for 3minutes in every two days to the nouse fed with alkaloid component of ginseng (G₂102). The results are as follow: 1. LD? of mouse (ICR species). is 3.75mrem and the mouse survived more than 30 days with the neutron-does of 0.25mrem/days. 2. When the cancer-mouse was treated with neutron and G₂102 together the life was increased by 221%. 3. The mouse which fed with G₂102 for 35days before neutron was irradia-Effects of G₂102 for Lifr Prolongation of the Mouse Irradiated by Neutron (Cf? Source)-ted withge dose of 4 mrem, were survived 100%. 4. By feeding G₂102 for 20-35 days before the neutron irradiation. The serum ι-globulin and albumin were recorved 100%. 5. It is assumed that α-Lipoprotein was decreased and chylomicron was increased by the neutron irradiation since the neutron inactivated the LPL(lipoprotein lipase). 6. Treatment of G₂102 to be effective on teh recovery of Lymphocytes, however, it don't seem to be effective on the neutrophills in 30 days.

      • An Integrated System for Swine Waste Treatment

        Management techniques for swine wastes require very careful selection because the high strength of these wastes has caused overloading and contamination of water-ways. Livestock waste management options often fall into two categories: utilization and treatment. One of the best alternatives for coping with swine wastes is an anaerobic-microalgas system, a combined strategy that can attain both waste treatment and useful single cell protein. The University of Florida Integrated System has been designed as integrated-multiuse systems for wastewater treatment, water reclamation, nutrient recycling and algal cell and energy production. This integrated system achieved cumulative removals of COD, BOD, total P and total N equal or exceed 95%. The maximum algal productivity of 30 g/㎡-d was obtained using anaerobic lagoon effluent as a basal medium. Proximate analysis of a composite sample of polymer flocculated algae gave a crude protein content of 56% on a dry weight basis.

      • Synthesis of new apicidin derivatives as Histone deacetylase(HDAC) inhibitors

        Histone deacetylase(HDAC), a neuclear enzyme that regulates gene transcription and the assembly of newly synthesized chromatin, has received much attention. In recent literature, The explosion of activity in this field has yielded the cloning of a mammalian gene which encodes a complementary histone acetyl transferases. Several cyclic tetrapeptide inhibitors of HDAC has been reported to affect the hyperacetylation of mammalian and plant histones. Apicidin, a natural product HDAC inhibitor recently isolated at Merck Research Laboratories, induces therapeutic applications as a broad spectrum antiprotozoal agent to multi-drug resistant malaria and a potential antitumor agnet. The biological activity of apicidin appears to be attributable to inhibition of apicocomplexan HDAC at low nanomolar concentrations. In the present work about the synthesis and biological activities of new apicidin derivative's which are analogues of apicidin isolated from Fusarium sp., we have discovered that apicidin and some derivatives have mild antitumor activity, which caused the change of tumor cells morphology to return to normal cells. As part of our program toward the development of new antitumor agents, we synthesized its derivatives systemically, and then studied their structure-activity relationships. At present, we modified the ketone moiety of apicidin to various imine derivatives in consideration of interaction with HDAC.

        비대면 대학 교양영어 수업에서 교수자의 커뮤니케이션 스타일이 학습자의 학습동기와 수업만족에 미치는 영향

        The Journal of Studies in Language 37.2, 197-212. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of student motivation on learning satisfaction in the online learning environment. We collected and analyzed questionnaires targeting 200 university students who attended online English classes following the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2019. The findings are as flows. First, the intellectual motivation of the learners was impacted in the order of the control type and the professional type. Second, the learners’ skills acquisition motivation was impacted by the control type and the professional type. Third, the learners’ social motivation was impacted by the control type and the professional type. Fourth, the impact of the English professors’ communication styles on the learners’ motivation to avoid stimuli in the contactless situation was not confirmed. Fifth, as a result of examining and validating the impact of the English professors’ communication styles on the students’ satisfaction with the class in the contactless situation, the learners’ satisfaction with the class was impacted in the order of the control type, professional type, and the cooperative type. In this connection, in this study, it is uncertain whether the COVID-19 crisis will be terminated over a short period of time moving forward, but is also expected that the discussions of the contactless classes for school education will continue even after of the COVID-19 crisis.         Reconfigurable Dual-Stopband Filters With Reduced Number of Couplings Between a Transmission Line and Resonators

        <P>This letter proposes a new design method for a bandstop filter with two stopbands. Contrary to a conventional method, the presented method allows for achieving two stopbands without increasing the number of the couplings between resonators and the transmission line connecting the input and output ports. In addition, a filter designed using the presented method can not only have different center frequencies but also have different bandwidths by adjusting the resonant frequencies of the resonators. For verification of the proposed approach a dual-stopband filter using four tunable substrate-integrated waveguide resonators has been designed and measured.</P>

        Validity of the scoring system for traumatic liver injury: a generalized estimating equation analysis

        Purpose: The scoring system for traumatic liver injury (SSTLI) was developed in 2015 to predict mortality in patients with polytraumatic liver injury. This study aimed to validate the SSTLI as a prognostic factor in patients with polytrauma and liver injury through a generalized estimating equation analysis. Methods: The medical records of 521 patients with traumatic liver injury from January 2015 to December 2019 were reviewed. The primary outcome variable was in-hospital mortality. All the risk factors were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The SSTLI has five clinical measures (age, Injury Severity Score, serum total bilirubin level, prothrombin time, and creatinine level) chosen based on their predictive power. Each measure is scored as 0-1 (age and Injury Severity Score) or 0-3 (serum total bilirubin level, prothrombin time, and creatinine level). The SSTLI score corresponds to the total points for each item (0-11 points). Results: The areas under the curve of the SSTLI to predict mortality on post-traumatic days 0, 1, 3, and 5 were 0.736, 0.783, 0.830, and 0.824, respectively. A very good to excellent positive correlation was observed between the probability of mortality and the SSTLI score (γ=0.997, P<0.001). A value of 5 points was used as the threshold to distinguish low-risk (<5) from high-risk (≥5) patients. Multivariate analysis using the generalized estimating equation in the logistic regression model indicated that the SSTLI score was an independent predictor of mortality (odds ratio, 1.027; 95% confidence interval, 1.018-1.036; P<0.001). Conclusions: The SSTLI was verified to predict mortality in patients with polytrauma and liver injury. A score of ≥5 on the SSTLI indicated a high-risk of post-traumatic mortality.

        Hydraulic Characteristics of Mountainous Forest Soils in Korea and Applicability of Pedotransfer Functions

        Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) were developed for each soil horizon to estimate hydraulic characteristics of mountainous forest soils in South Korea. Twenty one dominant soil series from 8 soil catenae such as granite-originated catena and volcanic ash-originated catena were selected for the study; gravel contents of selected soils were 10% or lower. Saturated conductivity (Ks) was measured for each horizon in situ. Particle size distribution and organic matter content of each horizon were also determined. Based on correlation analysis with total data set, sand separate showed positive relationship with Ks (r=0.24<SUP>*</SUP>) while clay separate had negative relationship with Ks (r=-0.29<SUP>**</SUP>). The correlation coefficients of sand, clay, and organic matter content with Ks increased to 0.41<SUP>**</SUP>, -0.67<SUP>***</SUP>, and 0.58<SUP>***</SUP>, respectively, using data from granite- or gneiss-originated catena with exception of volcanic ash-originated catena and sedimentary rock-originated catena. Determination coefficients of PTFs were 0.31 for A horizon, 0.25 for B, and 0.35 for C with all data set while those were 0.74 for A, 0.48 for B, and 0.54 for C. Organic matter was a dominant factor affecting Ks in A horizon but clay content was selected as the only factor influencing Ks in C horizon. It implies that PTFs should be developed with understanding characteristics of parent materials and horizons. Developed PTFs for granite- or gneiss-originated catena were following: A horizon: Log (Ks x 10<SUP>7</SUP>) = -0.031C + 0.398OM + 3.49 B horizon: Log (Ks x 10<SUP>7</SUP>) = -0.028C + 0.141OM + 4.05 C horizon: Log (Ks x 10<SUP>7</SUP>) = -0.072C + 4.66 where C is clay separate (%) and OM is organic matter content (g kg<SUP>-1</SUP>). The unit of Ks is cm sec<SUP>-1</SUP>.

        Long-Range alignment of liquid crystalline small molecules on Metal-Organic framework micropores by physical anchoring

        In this study, we are the first to observe the alignment behaviors of various assembling molecules withdifferent feature sizes and shapes, including rod-, disc-, and column-shaped molecules, on zeolitic imidazolateframework-8 (ZIF-8) surfaces. Among the various rod-shaped 4-alkyl-40-cyanobiphenyls (nCBs),those with short alkyl chains with less than nine hydrocarbons (e.g., 5CB, 6CB, 8CB, and 9CB) were verticallyaligned on the ZIF-8 surface, while nCBs with long alkyl chains with more than 10 hydrocarbons(e.g., 10CB and 11CB) were randomly oriented on the surface. Unlike rod-shaped small molecules, thedisc- and column-shaped molecules were randomly oriented on the ZIF-8 surface. A molecular dynamicsimulation revealed that the vertical alignment of rod-shaped molecules on the ZIF-8 surface can beattributed to physical anchoring by the ZIF-8 micropores. Most portions of the alkyl chain of nCB withshorter alkyl chain lengths (n 9) can be inserted into the ZIF-8 aperture, while nCBs with longer alkylchain lengths (n > 9) cannot be adequately anchored in the ZIF-8 aperture. According to these results, webelieve that MOF materials with micropores can offer an effective tool for controlling the orientation ofvarious functional small molecules.
