Short Communication : Inheritance of Grain Filling Duration in Spring Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell)

( Kamaluddin ),( Rishi Muni Singh ),( Malik Zainul Abdin ),( Mather Ali Khan ),( Tanweer Alam ),( Salim Khan ),( Lal Chand Prasad ),( Arun Kumar Joshi ) 한국식물학회 2007 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.50 No.4

To understand the genetic control of grain filling duration (GFD), i.e., the number of days from anthesis to physiological maturity, we studied the F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations of six spring wheat crosses from nine varieties/genotypes. Generation mean analysis for gene effects indicated that one or more types of epistasis were significant in all crosses. In each pairing, the F1 and F2 means were either intermediate or closer to the mean of the parent having the longer GFD. Our narrow-sense heritability estimate was reasonably high, at 47.67 (based on diallel analysis). This demonstrated that progress could be made from the selection in these crosses for either long or short GFD. The two early varieties that had identical maturity durations differed in their GFD values, indicating that maturity dates are not good criteria when choosing parents for modifying GFD. To utilize favorable additive × additive effects during this selection, we suggest that a single seed descent (SSD) or bulk opulation approach be adopted. In comparison, dominance effects would prove quite useful in hybrid wheat breeding programs.

The mediating effect of sleep disturbance on the association between hypertension and depression: a national data analysis

        Latief Kamaluddin,Akyirem Samuel,Sithichoksakulchai Siriluk,Nurrika Dieta,Sujarwadi Mokh,Hasan Faizul 대한고혈압학회 2024 Clinical Hypertension Vol.30 No.-

Background Sleep disturbance is a common among people with hypertension. However, the mediating role of sleep disturbance in the association between hypertension and depression remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of sleep disturbance in the association between hypertension and depression. Materials and methods This was cross-sectional study. The data were derived from the Indonesian Family Life Survey Fifth Wave (2014–2015). We include a total of 19,138 adults’ participants with age range from 18 to 65 years old who completed response on the variable of hypertension, sleep disturbance, and depression. The mediating model analysis was processed using the PROCESS macro ins SPSS from Hayes model. Results Depression was reported by 22% of total respondents. The group with hypertension showed a substantially higher prevalence of depression than non-hypertension group (P<0.001). Hypertension had a signifcant overall efect on depression (β=0.682; 95%CI 0.489 to 0.875, P<0.001). The direct efect of hypertension on depression was signifcant (β=0.418; 95%CI 0.244 to 0.592, P<0.001) and the indirect efect that mediated by sleep disturbance was also signifcant (β=0.264, 95%CI 0.174 to 0.356, P<0.001). It is worth noting that sleep disturbance partially mediated the association between hypertension and depression. Conclusion The fndings of this study indicated that sleep disturbance contributed to the etiology of depression and hypertension in adult populations. Nurses should be involved in managing sleep disturbances, such as using behavioral therapy, as it may serve as both a treatment and primary prevention measure for depression and hypertension.

Impact of Sulphur and Nitrogen Application on Seed and Xanthotoxin Yield in Ammi majus L.

        Ahmad, Saif,Jamal, Arshad,Fazili, Inayat Saleem,Alam, Tanweer,Khan, Mather Ali,Kamaluddin, Kamaluddin,Iqbal, Mohd,Abdin, Malik Zainul The Korean Society of Crop Science 2007 한국작물학회지 Vol.52 No.2

Field experiments were conducted to determine the physiological and biochemical basis of the interactive effect of sulphur (S) and nitrogen (N) application on seed and xanthotoxin yield of Ammi majus L. Six treatments were tested ($T_1$ = control-without manure and fertilizers, $T_2$ = manure @ 9 kg $plot^{-1}-10\;t\;ha^{-1},\;T_3=A_0N_{50}K_{25}P_{25},\;T_4=S_{40}N_{50}K_{25}P_{25},\;T_5=S_{40}N_{100}K_{25}P_{25}\;T_6=S_{20+20}N_{50+50}K_{25}P_{25})$). Nitrate reductase (NR) activity and ATP-sulphurylase activity in the leaves were measured at various phonological stages, as the two enzymes catalyze rate-limiting steps of the assimilatory pathways of nitrate and sulphate, respectively. The activities of these two enzymes were strongly correlated with seed and xanthotoxin yield. The highest nitrate reductase activity, ATP-sulphurylase activity and xanthotoxin yield were achieved with the treatment $T_4$. Any variation from this treatment decreased the activity of these enzymes, resulting in a reduction of the seed and xanthotoxin yield in Ammi majus L. The higher seed and xanthotoxin yield achieved in Ammi majus L. at treatment $T_4$ could be due to optimization of leaf soluble protein and photosynthetic rate, as these parameters are Influenced by S and N assimilation.

A High-Efficiency Direct Somatic Embryogenesis System for Strawberry(Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) Cultivar Chandler

Husaini, Amjad M.,Aquil, Samina,Bhat, Mukhtar,Qadri, Tabassum,Kamaluddin, Kamaluddin,Abdin, Malik Zainul The Korean Society of Crop Science 2008 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.11 No.2

A high-efficiency, reproducible somatic embryogenesis system for strawberry cultivar Chandler was developed. Thirty-one somatic embryos per explant(max no.) were recorded in leaf discs which were cultured on medium containing MS salts+$B_5$ vitamins+2% glucose+4.0 mg $1^{-1}$TDZ(Thidiazuron) and incubated at $10{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under darkness for one week followed by three weeks under 16-h photoperiod. The scanning electron microscopic(SEM) ontogeny revealed the normal development of somatic embryos from globular to heart-shaped and dissection microscopy from torpedo-shaped to cotyledonary-stage embryos. The maximum germination percentage of 48% could be obtained on MS medium containing kinetin(1.0 mg $1^{-1}$) and the maximum survival percentage(79%) of plantlets after four weeks was found to be in the mixture of vermiculite, peatmoss, and soilrite(1:1:1).

Technical Efficiency of the Shrimp Trawl Fishery in Aru and the Arafura Sea, the Eeastern Part of Indonesia

Umi MUAWANAH,Kamaluddin KASIM,Semm ENDROYONO,Imron ROSYIDI 한국유통과학회 2021 Asian Journal of Business Environment (AJBE) Vol.11 No.2

Purpose: This paper aims to study the fishing capacity of the shrimp trawlers in the Aru and Arafura Sea. Research design, data and Methodology: The abundant shrimp resources call for its sustainable use to advance economic activity. Time-series data of effort and catch from shrimp trawlers from 1980-2015 were utilized. The technical efficiencies of the vessels and the target capacity of the shrimp fishery were estimated using Peak to Peak Method. Results: Arafura's shrimp fishery presents high technical efficiency, which is suggested by the high scores of its fishing capacity utilization. The issuance of a ministerial decree on the prohibition of the use of trawls has impacted the plummeting of Arafura's shrimp trawler production right after the regulation implemented in 2015, which is far below the total production of the Arafura's shrimp trawler in 1980. Today, the Aru and Arafura Sea has different sets of fishing gears that are dominated by Squid Jigging and gillnet vessels. Conclusions: Arafura shrimp fishery performs high technical efficiency, which is indicated by the high utilization value of its catching capacity ranging from 71% to 100% annually from 1980 to 2015 This has shown that the resource-utilization has shifted from shrimps to other economically important species during the post trawl ban such as squid and pelagic. Any future intention to utilize shrimp resources, interaction of gears harvesting shrimp with current gears should be well considered in the policy making process.

Muhamad, Nor Asiah,Kamaluddin, Muhammad Amir,Adon, Mohd Yusoff,Noh, Mohamed Asyraf,Bakhtiar, Mohammed Faizal,Tamim, Nor Saleha Ibrahim,Mahmud, Siti Haniza,Aris, Tahir Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.7

Cervical cancer is the most common malignant cancer of the female reproductive organs worldwide. Currently, cervical cancer can be prevented by vaccination and detected at an early stage via various screening methods. Malaysia, as a developing country faces a heavy disease burden of cervical cancer as it is the second most common cancer among Malaysian women. This population based study was carried out to fulfil the primary aim of determining the survival rates of Malaysian women with cervical cancer and associated factors. Data were obtained from two different sources namely, the Malaysian National Cancer Registry (MNCR) and National Health Informatics Centre (NHIC) from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2005. Kaplan Meier analyses were conducted to identify the overall survival rates and median survival time. Differences in survival among different ethnic and age group were compared using the log-rank test. A total of 5,859 patients were included. The median survival time for cervical cancer in this study was 65.8 months and the 5-year survival rate was 71.1%. The overall observed survival rates at 1, 3 and 5 years were 94.1%, 79.3% and 71.1% respectively. The log-rank test finding also showed that there were significant differences in the 5-year survival rate among different ethnic groups. Malays had the lowest survival rate of 59.2% followed by Indians (69.5%) and Chinese (73.8%). The overall 5-year survival rate among patients with cervical cancer in Malaysia is relatively good. Age and ethnic groups remain as significant determining factors for cervical cancer survival rate.

The Determinants of Undiagnosed Hypertension Among Indonesian Adults: A Cross-sectional Study Based on the 2014-2015 Indonesia Family Life Survey

        Yeni Mahwati,Dieta Nurrika,Kamaluddin Latief 대한예방의학회 2022 예방의학회지 Vol.55 No.1

Objectives: This study investigated the determinants of undiagnosed hypertension among Indonesian adults. Methods: This study involved an analysis of secondary data from the 2014 Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) on 5914 Indonesian adults (≥40 years). The determinant variables examined in this cross-sectional study were education level, monthly per capita expenditures (PCE), whether the participant experienced headaches in the morning, and other general health variables. The outcome variable was undiagnosed hypertension, which was defined as participants with hypertension who had not received a hypertension diagnosis from a health professional and had never been prescribed medication for treating hypertension. The data were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: A total of 3322 participants (56.2%) were found to have undiagnosed hypertension. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of undiagnosed hypertension were significantly higher among those who completed primary school or lower (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.29 to 1.98), had low monthly PCE (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.43), did not report experiencing headaches in the morning (OR, 1.97; 95% CI, 1.76 to 2.21), and reported a general health status of healthy (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.82 to 2.30) than those who had a higher education level, had high monthly PCE, experienced headaches in the morning, and were unhealthy. Conclusions: Education level, monthly PCE, the experience of headaches in the morning, and general health status were associated with undiagnosed hypertension. The monitoring system for detecting undiagnosed hypertension cases must be strengthened. Health promotion is also necessary to reduce the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension.

Pivotal qualities for effective university leadership on the basis of a modified Australian model: the application of FIMIX-PLS and IPMA in the Malaysian academic context

Majid Ghasemy,Sufean Bin Hussin,Megat Ahmad Kamaluddin Bin Megat Daud,Ahmad Zabidi Bin Abdul Razak,Mohd Jamil Bin Maah 서울대학교 교육연구소 2017 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.18 No.4

This study was undertaken to determine the extent to which leadership capabilities and managerial competencies explain leadership performance in Malaysian Higher Education context. Data were collected from academic leaders in 25 public and private universities and colleges using a few previously developed scales in Malaysian context. Next, the collected data through 368 surveys were screened thoroughly prior to the main analysis. A variance-based structural equation modeling approach was adopted and SmartPLS 3 was used to analyze the data, followed by running finite mixture segmentation and importance-performance map analysis. The results did disclose unobserved heterogeneity within the data. Through the study, two models namely low-current-tenure leaders and high-current-tenure leaders models were developed. Moreover, role-specific competency and change-oriented capability were identified as the major areas of improvement to be addressed by managerial activities based on low-current-tenure leaders and high-current-tenure leaders models, respectively.

Academic leadership capability framework: a comparison of its compatibility and applicability in Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia

Majid Ghasemy,Sufean Hussin,Megat Ahmad Kamaluddin Megat Daud 서울대학교 교육연구소 2016 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.17 No.2

Previous studies have shown that leadership capabilities and managerial competencies are related to leadership performance effectiveness, i.e., higher capabilities and competencies are associated with higher performance effectiveness, and vice versa. Among the studies focusing on these qualities in academic settings, two recent studies in Australia and New Zealand in 2008 and 2012 may be stated which were guided by a conceptual framework known as the Academic Leadership Capability Framework. This framework became the basis for the construction of a survey instrument in order to assess five vital components of university leadership. The framework and the survey instrument were employed for a similar study in Malaysian public and private universities. In performing descriptive analysis, the results of the three studies were compared. This analysis revealed interesting similarities and differences among academic leaders within the three countries which can be used as a base for further policy making, and characterizing effective leadership in higher education. In addition, inferential statistics techniques were employed to detect the impact of the University Type and Previous Experience outside higher education on capabilities, competencies, and performance of the Malaysian academic leaders.
