        Multivariate Bias Correction for Climate Simulation Data, with Application to Precipitation Extremes in Korea

        Much of knowledge on future climate change depends on projections from the simulation codes with global circulation models (GCMs) and regional climate models (RCMs). But even state-of-art simulation codes still have a rather coarse resolution and and are substantially biased compared to real-world climate. In an attempt to remove systematic biases between simulation model output and real observations, a variety of statistical bias correction (BC) methods has been developed. The methods are classified to univariate and multivariate ones. This study reviews these techniques with more emphasis on recently advanced multivariate methods. These includes delta change approach, quantile mapping, quantile delta mapping, empirical copula bias correction, multivariate quantile delta mapping and multivariate stochastic BC with optimal transport function. An application of multivariate BC method to annual daily extreme rainfall in Korea peninsula is presented. We applied an ensemble prediction with generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) to the data obtained as simulated by the coupled model intercomparison project phase six (CMIP6) models. Simulation data under three RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) scenarios, namely RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, are employed. The 20-year and 50-year return levels and return periods relative to the reference years (1973-2014) are estimated for two future periods, namely period 1 (2021-2050) and period 2 (2061-2099).

        PBT-6, a Novel PI3KC2γ Inhibitor in Rheumatoid Arthritis

        Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) is considered as a promising therapeutic target for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because of its involvement in inflammatory processes. However, limited studies have reported the involvement of PI3KC2γ in RA, and the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated the role of PI3KC2γ as a novel therapeutic target for RA and the effect of its selective inhibitor, PBT-6. In this study, we observed that PI3KC2γ was markedly increased in the synovial fluid and tissue as well as the PBMCs of patients with RA. PBT-6, a novel PI3KC2γ inhibitor, decreased the cell growth of TNFmediated synovial fibroblasts and LPS-mediated macrophages. Furthermore, PBT-6 inhibited the PI3KC2γ expression and PI3K/ AKT signaling pathway in both synovial fibroblasts and macrophages. In addition, PBT-6 suppressed macrophage migration via CCL2 and osteoclastogenesis. In CIA mice, it significantly inhibited the progression and development of RA by decreasing arthritis scores and paw swelling. Three-dimensional micro-computed tomography confirmed that PBT-6 enhanced the joint structures in CIA mice. Taken together, our findings suggest that PI3KC2γ is a therapeutic target for RA, and PBT-6 could be developed as a novel PI3KC2γ inhibitor to target inflammatory diseases including RA.

      • Survey on Emotion Recognition Databases

        The social robots market has grown in recent years owing to advancements in robotics. Accordingly, there is a growing interest in emotion recognition technology, one of the fundamental technologies of social robots. Early research in emotion recognition predicted emotions into a Facial Action Coding System (FACS) that recognizes facial expressions by analyzing action units (AU), the fundamental action components of face muscles. However, with the advent of deep learning, models can now recognize facial emotions straight from images. For industry application of this deep learning based emotion recognition approach, supervised learning are usually applied, and this model training approach is highly dependent on training datasets. This survey gives an overview of datasets that can be used when the emotion recognition model is implemented. This paper focused on identifying the availability of datasets relevant to the elderly and children, the primary goals of social robots, as well as reviewing the data collection and annotation processes. This survey sheds insight on the current status of emotion datasets and presents suggestions for future development.

      • Weight Change Prediction for Automated Depression Diagnosis

        Early detection of depression through self-diagnosis is challenging. Especially survey-based self-diagnosis can lead to incorrect results because the answer contains the subjective opinion of the respondent. To overcome this problem, the multi sensor-based method using a smartphone has been proposed as an alternative for self-diagnosis of depression. These methods diagnose depression by using various sensor data that represented typical depression symptoms from the smartphone. However, sensor data have difficulty estimating weight changes, a representative symptom of depression. In this paper, we propose a facial image-based weight change estimation method for use in diagnosing depression. In particular, we show i) simple feature engineering, designed to fast and robustly compare between two facial images using 3D face landmarks, ii) face alignment processing that makes the model accurately compare facial images which were taken from various viewpoints, and iii) a novel preprocessing with monocular depth estimation to solve scale variance according to variation of distance between the camera and face.       • 국방커뮤니케이션 기반이론 정립방안 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 국방커뮤니케이션이라는 영역을 개척함에 있어 기반 이론을 어떻게 구축할 것인가에 대한 기초적인 탐색을 하는 데 있다. 국방커뮤니케이션은 국방 영역에서 일어나는 의사소통 행위에 대해 커뮤니케이션학에 입각한 학문적 고려를 하는 것을 말한다. 국방영역에서의 커뮤니케이션의 중요성은 날로 더해가고 있지만, 그에 대한 학문적 성찰은 부족한 실정이다. 국방커뮤니케이션의 기반 이론으로 제일 중요한 것은 행태주의 심리학에 기반한 커뮤니케이션학이다. 2차대전과 한국전쟁을 거치면서 심리전의 방법론을 연구하는 과정에서 창출된 커뮤니케이션학은 그 태생부터 군사학적인 것으로서 지배의 패러다임을 갖고 있어, 군사적인 목적의 대적 커뮤니케이션에 적합하다. 반면, 같은 커뮤니케이션 기법이 국민을 향해 적용되는 것은 특유의 억압적 성격으로 인해 국내의 민주주의를 저해할 수 있으므로, 준칙으로서의 민주주의를 관련 업무 규정 및 지침에 삽입할 필요가 있다. 또한 국방커뮤니케이션을 국내를 대상으로 수행할 때에는 의사소통적 합리성을 추구하는 하버마스의 이론을 고려할 필요가 있다. The purpose of this study is to search the way to establish a base theory of National Defence Communication(NDC). NDC is defined as a scientific consideration for communications in the field of National Defence based on Communication as a discipline. Despite the growing importance of communications in both military operations and the National Defence field, academic approach in military is insufficient. Communication as a Discipline based on Behaviorism is the first important base theory of NDC. It has progressed from the method of psychological warfare in World War II and Korean War. Because it started as a Military Science, its paradigm is harsh and dominant enough for the counter-enemy SC(Strategic Communication). Whereas, internal SC(Strategic Communication) may lead to controversy that could delay the development of democracy. For this reason, the study shows the necessity of inserting a democracy article in DOD Instruction and Joint Doctrine. When internal SC is implemented, we have to take note of the value of Jurgen Habermas’s Communicative Rationality as an another base theory of NDC.

      • Continuous 1D-Metallic Microfibers Web for Flexible Organic Solar Cells

        <P>We report the use of a continuous 1D-metallic microfibers web (MFW) as transparent electrode for organic solar cells (OSCs). The MFW electrode can be produced with a process that involves simple electrospinning and wet etching of metal thin film. Au MFW exhibits a maximum optical transmittance of 90.8% (at 15 Ω/sq of the sheet resistance) and excellent mechanical flexibility. The MFW structure has an average width in the range from 4 to 6 μm and a junction-free structure, resulting in very smooth surface roughness. The OSCs with Au MFW electrode exhibited a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.50% than the device with an indium tin oxide electrode (PCE = 3.20%).       • Correlation analysis between muscle activity and subjective assessment during lower limbs exercises according to backrest angle

        Objective: 본 연구는 등받이 각도에 따른 하지 재활 운동 시 근활성도의 변화 양상과 주관적 적합도 평가를 통하여 운동자세에 적합한 등받이 각도를 도출하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. Background: 균형과 유연성, 근력은 효율적인 보행을 위한 필수적 요소이다. 이러한 필요성에 의해 하지 근력을 강화하고 재활운동을 할 수 있는 기기들이 개발되고 있지만, 운동 자세와 의자 등받이에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. Method: 재활 운동 중, 고관절 내전 및 외전 운동과 사이클 운동을 선정하여 이 운동에 대해 20대 정상 성인 15명을 대상으로 근전도 실험과 주관적 평가를 진행하였다. 독립변수인 등받이 각도는 총 5단계(90°, 100°, 110°, 120° 130°)로 설정하여 실험을 진행하였다. Results: 고관절 내전 및 외전, 사이클 운동에서 각도별 근활성도와 주관적 평가에서 차이가 있었으며, 100°와 110°를 가장 선호하였으며 130°를 가장 적합하지 않다고 평가하였다. Conclusion: 재활운동기기 개발에 있어 운동 목적에 맞는 적합한 등받이 각도를 제공함으로써 재활운동에 적합한 운동 자세를 제공하는 것이 중요하다. Application: 본 연구는 추후 재활운동기기 개발에 있어서 인체공학적 자료로 활용될 수 있다.

      • A Novel Small-Molecule Inhibitor Targeting the IL-6 Receptor β Subunit, Glycoprotein 130

        <P>IL-6 is a major causative factor of inflammatory disease. Although IL-6 and its signaling pathways are promising targets, orally available small-molecule drugs specific for IL-6 have not been developed. To discover IL-6 antagonists, we screened our in-house chemical library and identified-LMT-28, a novel synthetic compound, as a candidate IL-6 blocker. The activity, mechanism of action, and direct molecular target of LMT-28 were investigated. A reporter gene assay showed that LMT-28 suppressed activation of STAT3 induced by IL-6, but not activation induced by leukemia inhibitory factor. In addition, LMT-28 downregulated IL-6-stimulated phosphorylation of STAT3, gp130, and JAK2 protein and substantially inhibited IL-6-dependent TF-1 cell proliferation. LMT-28 antagonized IL-6-induced TNF-alpha production in vivo. In pathologic models, oral administration of LMT-28 alleviated collagen-induced arthritis and acute pancreatitis in mice. Based on the observation of upstream IL-6 signal inhibition by LMT-28, we hypothesized IL-6, IL-6R alpha, or gp130 to be putative molecular targets. We subsequently demonstrated direct interaction of LMT-28 with gp130 and specific reduction of IL-6/IL-6R alpha complex binding to gp130 in the presence of LMT-28, which was measured by surface plasmon resonance analysis. Taken together, our data suggest that LMT-28 is a novel synthetic IL-6 inhibitor that functions through direct binding to gp130.</P>
