        Changes in the glucose and insulin responses according to high-protein snacks for diabetic patients

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop healthy, appetizing high-protein snacks with enhanced isolated soy protein for diabetic patients and determine the blood glucose and insulin response after being consumed by these patients. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty adult patients aged between 30 and 75 years, with a ≤ 10-year history of type 2 diabetes and hemoglobin A1c of < 7.5%, were enrolled in this study. They made 3 clinical visits at one-week intervals. The control group consumed 50 g carbohydrates (white bread), whereas the test groups consumed high-protein grain (HP_G) or high-protein chocolate (HP_C) after an 8-hrs fast. Blood (2 cm3) was drawn at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min before and after consumption to analyze the blood glucose and insulin concentrations. RESULTS: Compared to the commercial snacks, the developed high-protein snacks had below-average calorie, carbohydrate, and fat content and a 2.5-fold higher protein content. In diabetic patients who consumed these snacks, the postprandial blood glucose increased between 15 min and 2 h after consumption, which was significantly slower than the time taken for the blood glucose to increase in the patients who consumed the control food product (P < 0.001). Insulin secretion was significantly lower at 45 min after consumption (P < 0.05), showing that the high-protein snacks did not increase the blood glucose levels rapidly. The incremental area under the curve (iAUC), which indicated the degree of blood sugar and insulin elevation after food intake, was higher in the control group than the groups given the 2 developed snacks (P < 0.001), and there was no significant difference in insulin secretion. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the postprandial blood glucose and insulin response suggest that high-protein snacks are potential convenient sources of high-quality protein and serve as a healthier alternative for patients with type 2 diabetes, who may have limited snack product choices. Such snacks may also provide balanced nutrition to pre-diabetic and obese individuals.

        조명얼굴 영상을 위한 협력적 지역 능동표현 모델

        얼굴영상 공간에서 얼굴영상들은 조명이나 포즈에 의해 비선형적 분포를 갖는다. 이들을 선형 모델에 기반을 둔 AAM으로 모델링 하는 것은 한계가 있다. 본 논문에서는 얼굴영상에 대한 몇 개의 군집이 주어졌다고 가정하고, 각 군집 별로 지역적인 AAM 모델을 구축하여 정합과정 중에 적합한 모델이 선택되도록 한다. 정합과정에서 발생하는 모델변경에 따른 모델간의 정합 인자 갱신의 문제는 인자 공간에서 모델간의 선형 관계를 미리 학습하여 해결한다. 심각한 정합 실패에 따른 잘못된 모델 선택을 줄이기 위해 점진적으로 모델변경이 이루어지도록 한다. 실험에서는 제안하는 방법을 Yale-B 조명얼굴 영상에 적용하여 모델을 생성하고 기존 방법과 정합 성능을 비교한다. 제안 방법은 심각한 그림자가 발생하는 강도 높은 조명얼굴 영상에서 성공적인 정합 결과를 보여주었다. In the face space, face images due to illumination and pose variations have a nonlinear distribution. Active Appearance Models (AAM) based on the linear model have limits to the nonlinear distribution of face images. In this paper, we assume that a few clusters of face images are given; we build local AAMs according to the clusters of face images, and then select a proper AAM model during the fitting phase. To solve the problem of updating fitting parameters among the models due to the model changing, we propose to build in advance relationships among the clusters in the parameter space from the training images. In addition, we suggest a gradual model changing to reduce improper model selections due to serious fitting failures. In our experiment, we apply the proposed model to Yale Face Database B and compare it with the previous method. The proposed method demonstrated successful fitting results with strongly illuminated face images of deep shadows.

        『三字经』中的生僻字教学初探

        『三字經』은 중국 송나라와 원나라 시대에 형성된 고전적인 동몽학습서로서 현대 한자 교육과 중국문화 교육에서도 비교적 강한 응용성을 가진다. 『三字經』에 수록된 문자는 기본적으로 한자 학습, 문화 상식 학습, 고전 예비 학습의 의미를 가진 상용자이지만 그 밖에 일부 생소한 벽자가 존재한다. 이런 벽자는 成書 시간이 오래되어 생겼거나 일반적인 한자 교육에서 ‘상용자’로 간주 되지 않아 교육상 주목을 받지 못했다. 필자는 『三字經』에서 벽자를 분류한 결과 이런 벽자는 대부분 중국어에서 성명, 연대, 고유명사, 문화 요소의 의미를 내포하거나 가리키는 작용을 하기 때문에 중국문화 학습 과정에서 무시할 수 없는 의미를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 이에 필자는 『三字經』 중의 벽자에 대한 교수 방법을 탐구하고자 한다. 벽자는 전통적인 한자 학습에서 크게 주목받지 못하였고, 벽자 자체에 자형이 복잡한 한자를 포함할 수 있기 때문에 이런한 벽자의 음성, 자형 등을 교수를 할 때 『三字經』의 언어 환경과 더욱 잘 결합시켜야 한다. 다른 한편으로는 일반 한자 교육이 문자에 대한 응용 교육에 치중하는 것에 비해 생소한 벽자의 교육은 문화 교육에 더욱 치중해야 한다. 그 밖에 벽자의 교육은 그에 대한 연습, 시험과 관련된 텍스트가 부족하고 언어 응용 실천에서 사용 빈도가 상대적으로 낮기 때문에 교사는 다원화되고 목적성이 있는 생소한 글자의 교육을 공고화하는 방법을 채택해야 한다. 『三字經』을 활용하여 진행된 한자의 벽자 교육을 통해 제2외국어로서의 중국어 학습자들이 중국 문화를 더욱 쉽게 이해하며, 향후 중국문화 학습에 풍부한 기초자료를 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 한자 벽자 교육의 필요성과 타당성 및 응용가치 뿐만 아니라 교육에서의 실용 가치를 지님을 알 수 있다. San Zi Jing is a classic text of children"s innocence formed from the Song to Yuan Dynasties. It also has strong application in modern Chinese character teaching and Chinese culture teaching. The characters included in the San Zi Jing are basically common words with the significance of Chinese character learning, cultural knowledge learning and classic preparation learning, but in addition, there are some uncommon characters. there are some uncommon characters. These uncommon characters may be caused by the long time of writing,or may not regarded as "common words" in the Chinese character teaching and have received the same attention. Through the classification of the uncommon characters in San Zi Jing, the author finds that most of these uncommon characters take the function of expressing or referring to the names of people, dynasties, objects, cultural customs, etc.. Therefore, it can be said that these uncommon characters have significance that can not be ignored in the process of learning Chinese culture. The author tries to explore the teaching methods of the uncommon characters in the text of the San Zi Jing. Because the uncommon characters are not paid attention to in the traditional Chinese character learning, and the uncommon characters themselves are more likely to contain Chinese characters with complex shapes, it is necessary to better combine the context of the text of the San Zi Jing to reflect the auxiliary effect of the text of the San Zi Jing on the teaching of the uncommon characters; On the other hand, compared with the teaching of ordinary Chinese characters, which focuses on the practical teaching of characters, the teaching of uncommon characters should pay more attention to their meaning in culture; In addition, due to the lack of corresponding exercises and examination contents in the teaching of uncommon characters, and the relatively low frequency of use in language application practice, teachers should adopt diversified and targeted teaching consolidation methods for uncommon characters. Paying attention to the teaching of Chinese characters in the San Zi Jing can help Chinese second language learners better contact and understand Chinese culture, and provide many basic proper nouns for future Chinese culture learning. In the current Chinese culture teaching, it is of great practical value to use the " San Zi Jing " to teach uncommon Chinese characters.

        Study on meat metabolites analysis during the oxidation process

        This study was conducted to investigate the mechanism of the oxidation process of meat. In the instrumental color, redness, yellowness, and chroma showed significant differences during storage period (P<0.05), whereas hue angle increased (P<0.05), but no significant difference in lightness(P>0.05). The results of TBARS increased significantly during storage period (P<0.05). The thiol and carbonyl contents increased significantly during storage period(P<0.05). Metabolites analysis showed that lactic acid, proline, phenylalanine, mannose, talose, lysine, and tyrosine were significantly different with the storage periods (P<0.05). All the samples used in the experiment were able to confirm that sample went through normal oxidation process with indicators and components were increased or decreased. Further research is needed to study the correlation between metabolite materials.

      • HSP90 inhibitor (NVP-AUY922) enhances the anti-cancer effect of BCL-2 inhibitor (ABT-737) in small cell lung cancer expressing BCL-2

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cannot be efficiently controlled using existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy approaches, indicating the need for new therapeutic strategies. Although ABT-737, a B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) inhibitor, exerts anticancer effects against BCL-2-expressing SCLC, monotherapy with ABT-737 is associated with limited clinical activity because of the development of resistance and toxicity. Here, we examined whether combination therapy with ABT-737 and heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor NVP-AUY922 exerted synergistic anticancer effects on SCLC. We found that the combination of ABT-737 and NVP-AUY922 synergistically induced the apoptosis of BCL-2-expressing SCLC cells. NVP-AUY922 downregulated the expression of AKT and ERK, which activate MCL-1 to induce resistance against ABT-737. The synergistic effect was also partly due to blocking NF-κB activation, which induces anti-apoptosis protein expressions. However, interestingly, targeting BCL-2 and MCL-1 or BCL2 and NF-κB did not induce the cytotoxicity. In conclusion, our study showed that combination of BCL2 inhibitor with HSP90 inhibitor increased activity in in vitro and in vivo study in only BCL-2 expressing SCLC compared to either single BCL2 inhibitor or HSP inhibitor. The enhanced activity might be led by blocking several apoptotic pathways simultaneously rather than a specific pathway.</P>

      • Incremental Bitline Voltage Sensing Scheme With Half-Adaptive Threshold Reference Scheme in MLC PRAM

        <P>Research on phase-change random access memory (PRAM) for multilevel cells (MLCs) has been actively conducted owing to the advantages of PRAM cells, such as large resistance margin and fast read/write access time. However, the resistance drift (R-drift), which increases the resistance of the PRAM cells with time, should be overcome to achieve MLC PRAM operation. In this paper, we introduce sensing methods with R-drift tolerance, namely, drift-resilient cell-state metric and incremental bitline voltage (IBV), and compare these sensing methods in terms of the sensing margin and read access time. In addition, we propose a sensing scheme for IBV (IBVSS) with a half-adaptive threshold reference scheme (H-ATRS) to achieve high-R-drift tolerance in severe R-drift conditions with a small layout area for the reference cell. Verification of the IBVSS with H-ATRS is performed by HSPICE simulation using the 0.25-μm-model parameters used in the peripheral circuit of Samsung's 20-nm PRAM technology. From the simulation, we find that the IBVSS with H-ATRS achieves more than 1 V of sensing margin under severe R-drift conditions, which ensures stable read operation in the MLC PRAM with 304 ns of sensing time.</P>

      • Oxygen annealing of the ZnO nanoparticle layer for the high-performance PbS colloidal quantum-dot photovoltaics

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Though numerous researches regarding the influence of annealing atmospheric condition of ZnO have been carried out, the impact of annealing atmosphere on the carrier transporting properties and the performance of the ZnO-based optoelectronics has not been well-established. Here, the effects of annealing atmosphere (<I>i.e.</I>, N<SUB>2</SUB>, ambient air, and O<SUB>2</SUB>) used to generate ZnO nanoparticle (NP) layers are elucidated. The chemical nature of ZnO layers, especially the amount of oxygen vacancies in ZnO NPs, is modulated by the annealing atmosphere. As the composition of O<SUB>2</SUB> gas increases in the annealing atmosphere, a notable reduction of oxygen vacancies of ZnO NPs and electron mobility enhancement are observed, indicating that O<SUB>2</SUB> gas contributes to a reduction of surface defects on ZnO NPs during the annealing process. In addition, trap-filling by reduced oxygen vacancies of air- and O<SUB>2</SUB>-annealed ZnO layers, induces the enhanced built-in potential in colloidal quantum-dot photovoltaic (CQDPV) devices. As expected, PbS CQDPVs with an air- and O<SUB>2</SUB>-annealed ZnO layer demonstrate significantly improved power conversion efficiencies than CQDPVs with an N<SUB>2</SUB>-annealed ZnO layer.         Field emission enhancement of PbS colloidal quantum dot-decorated single-walled carbon nanotubes

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Herein, a simple and effective PbS colloidal quantum dot (CQD) decoration method for single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) is demonstrated. By dipping the SWNT film into a CQD dispersion followed by a solid-state ligand exchange, CQDs were successfully decorated onto the wall of SWNT without compromising a narrow size distribution. Spectroscopic studies suggested that (1) the CQD decoration and subsequent ligand exchange process did not alter the chemical nature of the SWNT framework and (2) there was a charge (electron) transfer process from the PbS CQD to the SWNT. Field emission (FE) characteristics of the CQD-decorated SWNT films revealed that FE enhancement was indeed established from SWNTs with a moderate degree of CQD decoration, while those with excessive decoration (coating) exhibited notable FE suppression. Horizontal current-voltage measurements with perpendicular-directional external electric field modulation suggested that electron supplement of SWNT from PbS CQD was pronounced as the amount of decorated CQDs increased.
