This paper examined the current status of KFL/KSL (Korean as a Foreign/Second Language) educational contents developed in Korea so far and discussed its future direction that meets the needs of a new era and changing expectations of learners. First, KFL/KSL contents were defined as ‘all forms of materials created based on a pedagogical framework which aims to achieve the goals of Korean language education effectively.’ The materials were compiled into a database consisting of 926 paper-based textbooks, 45 websites and 44 mobile applications. The analysis of data indicated that paper-based textbooks still make up the majority of KFL/KSL materials while progress is being made to develop digitized contents and materials to meet the changing needs of learners and digital environments. For future contents, efforts should be accelerated to develop customized materials catering to learners’ individual needs as well as develop materials across various platforms along with a thorough understanding/review of the instructional media. In this new era where pedagogical paradigm is being digitized, content developers and instructors should make continues efforts to accommodate and keep pace with changing technological environment. Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether maternal negative affectivity (MNA) moderates the effect of genetic polymorphism of SLC6A4 on behavior problems in children. Methods: Study participants comprised 143 preschoolers and their mothers from South Korea. The Childhood Behavior Checklist and Emotionality, Activity, and Sociability adult scale were used to measure child behavior and maternal affectivity. DNA from saliva was genotyped to determine serotonin transporter polymorphism. Results: MNA appeared to exert effects in externalizing (b =5.78, p<0.001) and internalizing problems (b =6.09, p< 0.001). Interaction between SLCA4 polymorphism and MNA showed effects on externalizing (b =−7.62, p<0.01) and internalizing problems (b =−9.77, p<0.01). Children with two short alleles showed considerable differences in both externalizing and internalizing problems according to MNA; however, children with one short allele or none showed relatively few differences in behavior problems due to maternal affectivity. Conclusion: The effect of SLC6A4 polymorphism on child behavior seemed to be moderated by MNA. In addition, the impact of MNA was found to vary based on a child’s genetic risk. High MNA may trigger the risk allele while low MNA causes the risk allele to illicit less behavior problems. Children with two short variants of the SLC6A4 gene may benefit from intervention that modulates MNA.

A 1-year-old castrated male Korean Shorthair cat presented with dys- pnea, anorexia, lethargy, and seizures. Physical examination revealed salivation, right forelimb hemiparesis, and rapid breathing. No abnormalities were detected on auscultation. Laboratory findings revealed increased levels of bilirubin, aspar- tate aminotransferase (AST), globulin, glucose, and a decreased albumin-to-glob- ulin (A:G) ratio. Both N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and feline serum amyloid A (fSAA) levels were significantly elevated. Thoracic radiogra- phy revealed mild cardiomegaly and diffuse increased interstitial infiltration with soft tissue opacity in the periphery of the right caudal pleural space. Echocardi- ography and lung ultrasonography were performed to investigate the cause of mild cardiomegaly and soft tissue opacity in the pleural space. Echocardiography revealed a mild amount of echogenic pericardial effusion, and lung ultrasonog- raphy showed an echogenic soft tissue mass with no blood signal in the right caudal pleural space, suggestive of a granulomatous lesion. After obtaining 5 mL of pericardial fluid through pericardiocentesis, cytology of the pericardial effusion sample revealed marked neutrophils and macrophages with no bacteria. IDEXX feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed the presence of the FIP virus biotype in the sample. This case presents a rarely reported atypical mixed form of FIP in a cat di- agnosed ante-mortem using pericardial effusion analysis. In this case, ultrasound examination played a crucial role in the definitive diagnosis of FIP by PCR biotyping through pericardiocentesis. Ultrasonography can be highly beneficial in guiding the diagnosis and evaluation of cats with suspected FIP.
Focused Written Corrective Feedback and Its Roles in Learning English Articles

This study examines whether focused written corrective feedback has an effect on EFL learners’ acquisition of a target structure: English articles. It also compares the effect of one common type of written corrective feedback-direct correction (DC)-with metalingustic explanation (ME). Recent research has shown that focused direct feedback is effective in improving grammatical accuracy. However, few studies have investigated the effect of metalingustic explanations as a feedback type, and the findings of the studies are inconsistent. 32 Korean EFL students in L2 writing classes participated in the study. The effect of the two types of focused feedback was measured by an error correction test and self-editing task. In addition, a four month delayed post-test and a retrospective interview were elicited from two learners in each of the DC and ME groups. Three major findings emerged. First, both groups who received feedback significantly outperformed on the error correction test, but the group difference was not significant. Second, only the DC group significantly improved in the accurate use of the article in the self-editing task. Third, the analysis of the data from the small number of students shows that neither of the feedback types had long-term impact on the error correction test and self-editing task. This implies that written corrective feedback might not be beneficial if the students do not have the knowledge to understand the feedback. These findings are discussed from the theoretical perspectives of SLA, and pedagogical implications and suggestions are provided.

The mitochondrial targeting domain (MTD) of Noxa contributes to its mitochondrial localization and to apoptosis induction. As a peptide, MTD fused with octa-arginine (R8), a CPP, induces necrosis related to intracellular calcium influx and destruction of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. We searched for homologs of MTD, and compared their cell killing capability when fused with R8. Three of the seven peptides triggered cell death with similar mechanisms. The comparative analysis of peptide sequences showed that four amino acid sites of MTD are critical in regulating necrosis, suggesting the potential to generate artificial, adjustable cytotoxic peptides, which could be effective medicines for many diseases. Thus, homologs functionality could hint to the functions of their belonging proteins.

The study aimed to examine the effects of extensive reading (ER) on the L2 reading attitudes of Korean EFL learners, focusing on the change of the reading attitudes. Participants were 108 first-year university students enrolled in six sections of a compulsory English course. Three of the classes were allocated to the ER group; the remaining three classes made upon the non-ER group. For the ER, eight sessions of sustained silent reading were integrated into the EFL course. Five L2 reading attitudinal variables—comfort, anxiety, intellectual value, linguistic value, and practical value—were measured, with a questionnaire administered at the beginning and the end of the ER and non-ER classes. Students’ attitudes toward ER were also examined with a survey, written comments, and interviews. The findings of the questionnaire showed that students’ comfort in the ER group increased and their anxiety towards EFL reading declined. In contrast, the non-ER group showed no significant difference in any of the L2 reading attitude variables. Results from the interview and written comments revealed not only that students had favorable attitudes but that they also had various negative opinions about ER. Based upon the findings, suggestions for research and pedagogy are provided.
