      • Validation of Electrical Impedance Tomography Qualitative and Quantitative Values and Comparison of the Numeric Pain Distress Score against Mammography

Juliana, Norsham,Shahar, Suzana,Chelliah, Kanaga Kumari,Ghazali, Ahmad Rohi,Osman, Fazilah,Sahar, Mohd Azmani Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.14

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a potential supplement for mammogram screening. This study aimed to evaluate and feasibility of EIT as opposed to mammography and to determine pain perception with both imaging methods. Women undergoing screening mammography at the Radiology Department of National University of Malaysia Medical Centre were randomly selected for EIT imaging. All women were requested to give a pain score after each imaging session. Two independent raters were chosen to define the image findings of EIT. A total of 164 women in the age range from 40 to 65-year-old participated and were divided into two groups; normal and abnormal. EIT sensitivity and specificity for rater 1 were 69.4% and 63.3, whereas for rater 2 they were 55.3% and 57.0% respectively. The reliability for each rater ranged between good to very good (p<0.05). Quantitative values of EIT showed there were significant differences in all values between groups (ANCOVA, p<0.05). Interestingly, EIT scored a median pain score of $1.51{\pm}0.75$ whereas mammography scored $4.15{\pm}0.87$ (Mann Whitney U test, p<0.05). From these quantitative values, EIT has the potential as a health discriminating index. Its ability to replace image findings from mammography needs further investigation.

Three definitions of probable sarcopenia and associations with falls and functional disability among community-dwelling older adults

Juliana Carvalho Segato Marincolo,Ivan Aprahamian,Ligiana Pires Corona,Anita Liberalesso Neri,Mônica Sanches Yassuda,Flávia Silva Arbex Borim 대한골다공증학회 2021 Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Vol.7 No.2

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of probable sarcopenia according to 3 different definitions (“strength, assistance with walking, rise from a chair, climb stairs, falls”- SARC-F score, low grip strength, and the guidelines indicated by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 - EWGSOP2) and assess the association of probable sarcopenia with functional disability and falls among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 419 older adults. Probable sarcopenia was assessed by 3 definitions: a SARC-F ≥ 4, low grip strength (< 27 kg for men and < 16 kg for women), and the EWGSOP2 criteria. Associations were investigated using Pearson's chi-square test and prevalence ratios were estimated by Poisson regression (P < 0.05). Results: Of the total, probable sarcopenia was identified in 23.0% of participants (SARC-F ≥ 4 score), 33.7% (low grip strength), and 10.4% (EWGSOP2) according to each different definition. In adjusted regression models, having at least 1 instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and having fallen in the last 12 months were significantly associated with a SARC-F ≥ 4 (prevalence ratio, PR = 1.60; and PR = 2.50, respectively) and EWGSOP2 (PR = 1.78; and PR = 2.19, respectively). Conclusions: IADL disability and falls were associated with a SARC-F ≥ 4 and the EWGSOP2 criteria (SARC-F ≥ 4 and low grip strength). Probable sarcopenia may be used in clinical practice in order to facilitate the diagnosis of definite sarcopenia and to implement early interventions that could prevent functional decline and falls in older people.

Incidence and risk factors for the development of cerebral metastasis in cervical cancer patients

Juliana de Brito Rangel,Alessandra Grasso Giglio,Cristiane Lemos Cardozo,Anke Bergmann,Luiz Claudio Santos Thuler 대한부인종양학회 2022 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.33 No.5

Objective: Cerebral metastasis (CM) in cervical cancer (CC) cases, although rare, results in high lethality rates. The present study aimed to assess CM incidence in a Brazilian reference CC center and evaluate the risk factors for CM development. Retrospective observational study of patients diagnosed with CC between 2010 and 2017. Methods: Cumulative CM incidence and incidence density were evaluated. Characteristics associated to CM development risks were identified using crude (cOR) or adjusted (aOR) odds ratios. Results: A total of 3,397 patients were included in this study. Patient age ranged from 18 to 101 years, with a mean age of 48.8±14.0. After a mean follow-up time of 3.2±2.1 years, 51 CM cases were identified, resulting in a cumulative incidence of 1.5% (95% confidence intervals [CI]=1.12–1.97) and an incidence density at the end of the 6th year of 27.4 per 1,000 women/ year. Advanced clinical stage (aOR=3.15; 95% CI=1.16–8.58; p=0.025), the presence of previous lung metastasis (aOR=4.04; 95% CI=1.82–8.94; p=0.001) and the adenocarcinoma (aOR=2.90; 95% CI=1.46–5.76; p=0.002), adenosquamous carcinoma (aOR=7.33; 95%CI=2.87–18.73; p<0.001), undifferentiated carcinoma (aOR=14.37; 95% CI=3.77–54.76;p<0.001) and neuroendocrine carcinoma (aOR=21.31; 95% CI=6.65–68.37, p<0.001) histological types were associated with a higher risk for CM development. CM risk was higher in the first years of follow-up, with no cases observed after the 6th year. Conclusion: CC patients in advanced clinical stages, displaying previous lung metastasis and non-squamous histological types are at high risk of developing CM.

      • A SOCIALISATION PERSPECTIVE ON MALE MILLENNIALS’ GROOMING HABITS

        Juliana Akrobetu,Hector Gonzalez-Jimenez 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2017 Global Fashion Management Conference Vol.2017 No.07

This article explores how the concepts of masculinity and socialisation influence the decision-making process young males undergo when purchasing and using typically feminine related products (Beauregard, 2007). We use socialisation theory to understand the varying differences in the progression and perceptions of males today with regard to masculinity and skincare products. The article utilises a scenario exercise to cross reference their attitudes to male skin care brands and we propose that male attitudes to skincare and their socialised background are inherently linked. The result show six latent themes driven by theory-led coding (Kotler, 2000; Otnes and McGarth, 2001; Kraft and Weber, 2012). The ‘act’ of masculinity and the ‘adoption of femininity’ explain the influences in early socialisation. Meanwhile, ‘efficiency’ (or practicality), ‘help’, ‘trust’ and ‘past experience’ are additional influencers in the decision-making process. Specifically, males with predominantly female skincare users in the home embrace skincare related products, whereas males who were brought up to ‘act’ like men, particularly without a father presence in the home, are more likely to adhere to the masculine stereotype and avoid using such products. Finally, males with a strong father figure in the home are found to differentiate from their fathers, either by avoiding the same brands or choosing not to use the products at all. These behaviours (social, psychological and personal) are the external factors which ultimately affect their final purchase choice. Overall, the article offers an extended understanding on these external influences that drive the purchase decision of this under-researcher consumer segment.

Prediction of preeclampsia in the first trimester of pregnancy using maternal characteristics, mean arterial pressure, and uterine artery Doppler data in a Brazilian population

Juliana de Freitas Leite,Guilherme Antonio Rago Lobo,Paulo Martin Nowak,Irene Reali Antunes,Edward Araujo Júnior,David Baptista da Silva Pares 대한산부인과학회 2019 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.62 No.6

ObjectiveTo evaluate the performance of the preeclampsia (PE) screening algorithm of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF)during the first trimester in a Brazilian population using maternal characteristics, mean arterial pressure (MAP), anduterine artery Doppler data. MethodsThis is a prospective cohort study that evaluated 701 pregnant women during the first trimester ultrasound screeningfor chromosomal abnormalities (11–13+6 weeks). All patients provided information regarding clinical and obstetrichistory, MAP, and mean uterine artery pulsatility index (mean PI). Patients were assigned to four groups based on thepresence of PE and gestational age at delivery: group 1 (control), patients without hypertensive disorders (n=571);group 2, PE and delivery before 34 weeks of gestation (n=7); group 3, PE and delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, including patients from group 2 and patients that presented PE with delivery between 34 and 37 weeks (n=17); andgroup 4, PE and delivery before 42 weeks of gestation, including patients from both groups 2 and 3 and patients thatpresented PE with delivery between 37 and 42 weeks of gestation (n=34). ResultsAfter the exclusion of 96 patients, we evaluated the data of 605 patients. By combining maternal characteristics, MAP,and the mean uterine artery PI for the detection of PE, we found a sensitivity of 71.4% in group 2, 50% in group 3,and 41.2% in group 4 (false positive rate=10%). ConclusionUsing maternal characteristics, MAP, and uterine artery Doppler data, we were able to identify a significantproportion of patients who developed preterm PE.

Tuning with Phosphorylcholine Grafts Improves the Physicochemical Properties of PLL/pDNA Nanoparticles at Neutral pH

Juliana Semensato,Júlio Cesar Fernandes,Mohamed Benderdour,Vera Aparecida de Oliveira Tiera,Aline Margarete Furuyama Lima,Marcio José Tiera 한국고분자학회 2020 Macromolecular Research Vol.28 No.2

The improvement of biological properties of polycations is a fundamental step to overcome their limitations as non-viral gene carriers. This work studied the effect of phosphorylcholine (PC) groups on the physicochemical properties of poly(L-lysine) (PLL)/pDNA nanoparticles. Phosphorylcholine-grafted PLL derivatives (PLL-PC) containing increasing proportions of PC were obtained by the reductive amination reaction with phosphoryl glyceraldehyde and characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and GPC measurements. The PLL-PC derivatives were used to prepare polyplexes with pDNA and their properties were evaluated by fluorescence, gel electrophoresis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The PLL-PC derivatives were able to interact with pDNA at low N/P ratios in physiological pH to form stable polyplexes having lower zeta potentials, as evidenced by the gel electrophoresis and zeta potentials measurements. A degree of grafting of 10% increased the in vitro transfection efficiency of PLL and a degree of 20 mol% of PC groups provided colloidal stability in physiological saline solution at neutral pH. Overall, the PC-PLL derivatives exhibited improved physicochemical properties and have significant potential for further studies as non-viral gene transfer agents.

Antihypertensive and Cardiovascular Effects of Catechin-Rich Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis) Leaf Extract in Nitric Oxide–Deficient Rats

        Juliana M. Jaffri,Suhaila Mohamed,Nordanial Rohimi,Intan N. Ahmad,M. Mustapha Noordin,Yazid A. Manap 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.7

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) leaf extract (OPLE) possesses good ex vivo vasodilation and antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the catechin-rich OPLE antioxidant, antihypertensive, and cardiovascular effects in normal and nitric oxide (NO)–deficient hypertensive rats. OPLE was administered orally (500 mg/kg of body weight/day) to normotensive Wistar rats and Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME)-induced NO-deficient hypertensive rats. OPLE significantly (P<.05) attenuated blood pressure increases, increased serum NO, reduced lipid peroxidation, and showed antioxidant effects in NO-deficient hypertensive rats. OPLE decreased the coronary arteriole wall-to-lumen ratio to near normal values under NO deficiency. Although OPLE showed good antihypertensive and antioxidant effects under NO deficiency, it was not hypotensive to normal rats and produced no chronic cardiovascular toxicity in any of the rats throughout the 12-week study. This is the first report on the in vivo antihypertensive properties of green tea catechins extracted from an alternative source, namely, oil palm leaf, for use as a medicinal food for hypertension and cardiovascular ailments.
