      • Genetic Variation of the Asian Cavity-Nesting Honey Bee, Apis cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in South Korea, as Revealed by An Internal Spacer Sequence of Mitochondrial DNA

        Worldwide studies on Apis cerana variation for biogeography and genetic diversity depended largely on a 86~93 bp-long mitochondrial non-coding region (internal spacer region) located between tRNALeu and COII (named as NC2), possibly due to higher variability among available markers. In order to incorporate the A. cerana occurring in South Korea into world extensive data, we also sequenced the NC2 from 118 A. cerana samples collected over nine Korean localities and 66 A. cerana samples over seven Asian localities, such as China, Vietnam, and Thailand. These data were combined with preexisting world data to scrutinize genetic relationships of A. cerana in South Korea to outside distributional range. Sequencing of 184 samples provided a total of ten haplotypes: five from Korea, six from China, one from Vietnam, and two from Thailand. Among them eight were new, whereas two were previously reported ones. Phylogenetic analysis of A. cerana NC2 haplotypes so far found including ours has confirmed the presence of four major groups of A. cerana (Asian mainland group, Sundaland group, Palawan group, and Luzon-Mindahnao group) and all haplotypes found in this study also were included in the Asian mainland group. In order to find further variable regions that can be used as sequence-based marker several mitochondrial non-coding regions and nuclear intron regions are in the middle of testing.

        Effects of Fetal Mesencephalic Cell Grafts on the Intrastriatal 6-hydroxydoapmine Lesioned Rats

        The effects of fetal mesencephalic cell grafts on the restoration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic function were studied in the intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats. Four weeks after lesioning, transplantation of ventral mesencephalic cells from embryonic day 14 fetuses showed the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive cells and fiber outgrowth in the grafted striatum, and significantly ameliorated symptomatic motor behavior of the animals, as determined by apomorphine-induced rotation. Furthermore, in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), the numbers of TH + cells and fibers were markedly restored. Dopamine content of ipsilateral SNc was close to that of contralateral SNc $(91.9{\pm}9.8%)$ in the transplanted animals, while the ratio was approximately 32% in sham-grafted animals. These results indicate that grafted cells restored the activity for the dopaminergic neurons located in SNc, although they were transplanted into striatum. In addition, we showed that the implanted fetal cells expressed high level of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), suggesting that the transplanted fetal cells might serve as a dopamine producer and a reservoir of neurotrophic factors. These results may be helpful in consideration of the therapeutic transplantation at early stage of PD.

      • The Mitochondrial Genome of the Black Dwarf Honey Bee, Apis andreniformis (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

        We sequenced 17,329 bp of mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the black dwarf honey bee, Apis andreniformis (Hymenoptera: Apidae), that lacks ~200 bp of the A+T-rich region for the completion of the genomic sequence. The gene arrangement of A. andreniformis mitogenome is identical to that of A. cerana. However, the genome contains 5 additional tRNALeu(CUN) located 4 copies between tRNAMet and tRNAGln, and 1 copy between tRNAGln and tRNAAla, along with the typical sets of genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs) including regular tRNALeu(CUN) and the A+T-rich region (at least 923 bp). Only 1 copy of tRNALeu(CUN) differed by 1 bp from other 4 copies of tRNALeu(CUN). Each additional tRNALeu(CUN) is followed by nearly identical 68-bp long repeat sequence (95.6% identity). All 13 protein coding genes have typical start codons found in insect mitochondrial PCGs (2 ATA, 9 ATT, and 2 ATG).

        Skin Barrier Recovery by Protease-Activated Receptor-2 Antagonist Lobaric Acid

        Atopic dermatitis (AD) results from gene and environment interactions that lead to a range of immunological abnormalities and breakdown of the skin barrier. Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) belongs to a family of G-protein coupled receptors and is expressed in suprabasal layers of the epidermis. PAR2 is activated by both trypsin and a specific agonist peptide, SLIGKV-$NH_2$ and is involved in both epidermal permeability barrier homeostasis and epithelial inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of lobaric acid on inflammation, keratinocyte differentiation, and recovery of the skin barrier in hairless mice. Lobaric acid blocked trypsin-induced and SLIGKV-$NH_2$-induced PAR2 activation resulting in decreased mobilization of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ in HaCaT keratinocytes. Lobaric acid reduced expression of interleukin-8 induced by SLIGKV-$NH_2$ and thymus and activation regulated chemokine (TARC) induced by tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-${\alpha}$) and IFN-${\gamma}$ in HaCaT keratinocytes. Lobaric acid also blocked SLIGKV-$NH_2$-induced activation of ERK, which is a downstream signal of PAR2 in normal human keratinocytes (NHEKs). Treatment with SLIGKV-$NH_2$ downregulated expression of involucrin, a differentiation marker protein in HaCaT keratinocytes, and upregulated expression of involucrin, transglutamase1 and filaggrin in NHEKs. However, lobaric acid antagonized the effect of SLIGKV-$NH_2$ in HaCaT keratinocytes and NHEKs. Topical application of lobaric acid accelerated barrier recovery kinetics in a SKH-1 hairless mouse model. These results suggested that lobaric acid is a PAR2 antagonist and could be a possible therapeutic agent for atopic dermatitis.

        한국 청소년의 위기에 대한 기독교교육적 대안 모색

        This study began with a critical question about how Christian Education can creatively respond to the present crisis of Korean youth. Christian Education have tasks helping youth to overcome challenges presented to them and develope their own vision for the future. To this end, this research investigates the characteristics of current adolescent problems and Christian Education of Korea through social materials and documentary research, field surveys and suggest practical methods to connect Christian Education field with mobile media what is the main communication media of youth. This study suggests two Christian Education task to be accomplished in adolescence: the formation of the self-identity based on Christian values, the formation of critical and creative reflection about current culture. For the practice of Christian Education with mobile media, recommendations for the configuration of the Korean Church`s mobile web, creating new mobile app for the formation of youth identity and critical reflection and creativity in Christian community are suggested for its specific methods. These are the teaching-learning process that focuses on interactions and relationship of Christian community. One of the most significant demands that current Christian Education face is proactive coping and creative responses to a variety of changes. Christian Education should continue seeking for its new possibilities. It needs to expand new concepts of education and further develop concrete steps of teaching-learning process. And this should be done by fundamental and in-depth study and critical examination on new media as well.

        최근 인터넷의 급속한 발전과 컴퓨터 및 네트워크 기술이 점차 보편화 됨에 따라 다양한 정보를 제공하는 서비스들이 증가하고, 서비스를 제공하는 시스템 또한 사용 영역이 지속적으로 확대되고 있다. 이렇듯 다양한 서비스를 제공하는 시스템을 효율적으로 관리하고 여러 이유로 발생하는 장애를 능동적으로 감지하여 해결할 수 있는 기술은 최근 중요한 연구 이슈 중 하나가 되었다. 본 논문은 관리자의 편의성을 고려하여 웹 기반 방식의 관리 시스템을 제공함과 동시에 실시간 장애관리 시스템을 설계 및 구현하였다. 또한 장애가 발생한 시스템을 정확하고 신속히 감지하기 위해 실시간으로 장애 정보를 수집 후, 이를 관리자에게 SMS 서비스로 알려주는 시스템을 제안한다.

        Although the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is not clear yet, RA is considered a risk factor for MRONJ. By presenting a rehabilitation case of MRONJ patient with RA, we described the implication of RA as a risk factor and the strategic points in oral rehabilitation in these patients. After surgical treatment in patient with MRONJ on anterior of the mandible, oral rehabilitation was performed through the overdenture using implants. RA, osteoporosis and the agents used in its treatment may disrupt the normal bone metabolism and contribute to the development of ONJ. Therefore, invasive dental surgery should be avoided in patients with these systemic diseases. Since excessive occlusal force can cause ONJ by damaging the oral mucosa, the oral rehabilitation method should be chosen to avoid excessive overload on the oral mucosa. In selected cases with controlled risk factors, dental implants may be considered as a treatment option in oral rehabilitation. In patients on the treatment of RA and osteoporosis, dentists should be aware of the potential risk for MRONJ occurrence and plan appropriate treatment with consideration of various risk factors.

        컴퓨터 가상현실 기술은 반복적인 교육과 훈련을 필요로 하는 의료 시뮬레이션 분야에 도입되어 시술 훈련, 수술 계획 및 수술 시뮬레이션 등의 영역에 응용되고 있다. 3차원적 가시화나 네비게이션에 치중하던 기존의 의료 시뮬레이션에 보다 현실감을 증진시키기 위해서는 인체 해부학적 기관의 변형성과 사용자와 대상 기관 사이의 물리적인 상호작용이 반영되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 2차원 및 3차원 마우스만을 사용하던 상호작용 환경을 개선하여 시술 동작시 물리적인 역감을 전달받을 수 있는 햅틱 인터페이스를 도입하고, 보다 현실감 있는 시각적 디스플레이를 위해 햅틱 워크벤치를 사용하였다. 사용자의 햅틱 인터페이스 조작에 따른 가상 인체 기관의 물리적 변형 및 이에 따른 물리적 역감은 삼각메쉬를 이용한 매스-스프링 모델을 사용하여 구현하였고, 가상 시술 도구와 가상 인체 기관와의 빠른 충돌 감지를 위해서는 OBBTree를 적용하였다.

        디아스포라에 대한 조선지식인의 문학적 수용 태도 ― 명(明)나라 유민(遺民) 강세작(康世爵)의 실상을 중심으로 ―

        16~17세기에 조선에 입국한 중국 이민자 중에는 자의에 의해 월경하였다기보다는 혼란한 동아시아의 정세 속에서 국경을 넘은 유민에 관심을 두고 그들이 이방인으로 혹은 디아스포라로 조선에서 생활터전을 마련하면서 겪게 되는 삶의 모습에 관심을 가질 필요가 있다. 강세작은 단순히 유민이 아닌 정착지인 회령은 물론이고 중앙의 관리들에게까지 그의 존재가 알려졌다. 강세작을 연구하는 연구자로서 이에 대한 답변이 필요하다는 인식이다. 실제 그의 대한 기록은 박세당의 「강세작전」처럼 사실을 기록한 부분이 있는가 하면, 그를 바라보는 시선이 담긴 시문와 묘지명도 전한다. 심지어 사후 100년에 전설이 되어 실존인물과 관련하여 남겨진 이야기도 있다. 이러한 기록들은 강세작의 삶이 상황에 따라 여러 형태의 문학으로 새롭게 재해석되어 강한 생명력으로 자라고 있다는 반증이다. 본 연구는 17세기 명나라 유민을 대하는 조선지식인의 인식과 산재한 강세작의 이야기를 일갈하여 문학 속에서 어떻게 표현되고 있는지 살핀다. 아울러 그가 쓴 「자술」과 역사의 기록이 차이가 있음을 인지하고 시대의 변화에 따라 역사와 유민에 대한 인식이 달라지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. With paying attention to refugees of crossing a frontier amidst the chaotic situation in East Asia rather than having willfully crossed the border among Chinese immigrants who entered Joseon in the 16th~17th century, there is a need to have an interest in the image of life that they come to suffer while arranging a site of living in Joseon as an alien or Diaspora. Gang Se-jak was known his existence even to central government officials as well as to Hoeryeong where is settlement, simply not a refugee. As a researcher into Gang Se-jak, a response to this is recognized to be necessary. As for a record on him in reality, there is a section that recorded a fact like Park Se-dang's 「Gangsejakjeon(康世爵傳)」. On the other hand, a poetry & prose(詩文) and epitaph(墓誌銘) of being contained a view of looking at him are also reported. There is even a story that was left in relation to a real person as it became a legend 100 years after his death. These records are a contrary evidence as saying that Gang Se-jak's life is growing as strong vitality with being newly reinterpreted into many forms of literature depending on a situation. This study inquires into Joseon intellectuals' perception of refugees in Ming (明) dynasty of the 17th century, and into how it is expressed in literature with thundering the scattered stories on Gang Se-jak. In addition, its significance is discussed with recognizing that there is a difference in 「Confession」 written by him and a historical record.

        Microstructure and High Temperature Oxidation Property of Fe-Cr-B Based Metal/Ceramic Composite Manufactured by Powder Injection Molding Process

        This study investigated the microstructure and high temperature oxidation property of Fe–Cr–B metal/ceramic compositemanufactured using powder injection molding process. Observations of initial microstructure showed a unique structurewhere α-Fe and (Cr, Fe)2B form a continuous three-dimensional network. High temperature oxidation tests were performedat 900, 1000 and 1100 °C, for 24 h, and the oxidation weight gain according to each temperature condition was 0.13, 0.84and 6.4 mg/cm2, respectively. The oxidation results according to time at 900 and 1000 °C conditions represented paraboliccurves, and at 1100 °C condition formed a rectilinear curve. Observation and phase analysis results of the oxides identifiedCr2O3and SiO2at 900 and 1000 °C. In addition to Cr2O3and SiO2,CrBO3and FeCr2O4formed due to phase decompositionof boride were identified at 1100 °C. Based on the findings above, this study suggested the high temperature oxidationmechanism of Fe–Cr–B metal/ceramic composite manufactured using powder injection molding, and the possibility of itsapplication as a high temperature component material was also discussed.
