In this paper, we propose an optical true time-delay (TTD) feeder system for phased array antennas (PAAs), which consists of a fixed wavelength laser diode, 2×2 MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) switches, and fiber delay lines. A 3-bit TTD for 10 ㎓ PAAs with two antenna elements has been implemented and the time delay difference between the antenna elements has been measured for all the possible beam radiation angles according to the combination of MEMS switches setup. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with calculated ones.
초 광대역 광 증폭기용 광역 파장 필터 개발에 관한 연구

We present the simulation results of the S-band(1480-1520nm) and M-band(1530-1570nm) filters for ultra-broadband optical amplifiers. The bandpass filters are multi-layer dielectric films directly deposited on the fiber end-face. Transmittance spectra are obtained with the characteristic matrix method. In the design, the total number of film layers is 35 and the half wavelength thickness is used at the 6th, 18th, and 30th layers for both filters. Simulation results show that the 3-dB bandwidth and the maximum ripple of the S-band filter are 35.8nm and 0.13dB, and those of the M-band filter are 37.1nm and 0.13dB, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a WDM slotted ring network, in which each node is equipped with a fixed receiver, a tunable transmitter, a tunable receiver, and a buffer. We investigated the effect of buffer size on the performance for the network and found out that proper selection of queue size could drastically reduce the delay of network.
실시간 지연선로를 사용한 위상배열 안테나의 지향성 향상에 관한 연구

In this paper, We proposed a novel true time-delay(TTD) for phased array antennas(PAAs) using fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs) and metal films deposited on fiber ends. This structure requires fewer number of FBGs and provides relaxed wavelengh selection than the previous TTDs using only FBGs. A 10 ㎓ PAA system with the proposed TTD has been fabricated to show that the measured time delay difference for each steering angle is less than ±1ps compared with the calculated one. Dolph-Tschebyscheff array method was used to improve the directivity for a 10 ㎓, four element PAA incorporating the proposed TTD. Simulation results showed that the ratio of the main lobe to the first side lode for the case of Dolph-Tschebyscheff array is 16.2 dB greater than that for the case of uniform array.

Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) has become a key passive device for applications in fiber-optic communications. It also has a great potential in a wide range of sensing applications for the measurement of strain, temperature, pressure, etc. In this paper, we report experimental results on a temperature/strain sensor composed of a bare FBG and a solder-clad FBG connected in cascade. Since the Bragg wavelength of the solder-clad FBG does not change with strain and its sensitivity is four times as large as that of the bare FBG up to 110℃, it was used to measure temperature. On the other hand, strain information was obtained from the reflection wavelength difference between the two FBGs.

<P>A novel optical true time-delay (TTD) feeder for phased-array antennas incorporating a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) prism and optical fibers with metal film deposited on their cleaved ends is proposed. By arranging a metal-film reflector at one end of the fiber delay line with FBGs written at different locations, one FBG for every fiber delay line can be saved (compared to FBG-only TTD feeders) and flexibility of wavelength selection is also provided due to the uniform reflectance of the metal film in a broad wavelength range. A TTD feeder with two fiber delay lines for 10-GHz linear phased-array antennas is built to steer a beam into three directions at 0° and ±30°. The experimental results of the time delays agree well with those calculated at all the steering angles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Plastic Optical Fiber Refractive Index Sensor Employing an In-Line Submillimeter Hole

<P>An in-line submillimeter hole fabricated by micro-drilling plastic optical fiber (POF) directly has been proposed as a compact refractive index sensor. Since the hole behaves as a concave lens if it is filled with a liquid having lower refractive index than that of the fiber core, transmittance increases in proportion to the refractive index. Analysis of the sensor transmittance has been performed using a simple ray optics model. Through immersing a 1.5-mm POF with a 0.35-mm-radius hole into various liquids, transmittance of the sensor has been measured at 670 nm. It has been shown that the experimental and analytical results are in excellent agreement.</P>

Congenital nystagmus is a well-established clinical entity with strong hereditary characteristics in which the causes of the nystagmus is not known: in general the eyes are objectively normal. Electronystamography is mandatory for the examination of a patient with nystagmus to take accurate record and reasonable analysis. Treatment is very difficult and not available in all patients. Three brothers with congenital nystagmus in one family is reported and a brief review of literature is described.
