A Short Note on Inclusive and Exclusive Plurals in Korean

Michael Jonathan Mathew Barrie(Michael Jonathan Mathew Barrie ),Éric Mathieu(Éric Mathieu ) 한국생성문법학회 2023 생성문법연구 Vol.33 No.1

The aim of this short article is to give a comprehensive analysis of number in Korean, adding a novel observation about the interpretation of plurals in that language. Based on the new data, our proposal is that number is distributed along the nominal spine with different effects depending on the type of functional head (and semantic features) it is associated with. In particular, we propose that number in Korean is associated with two number projections, NumP1 and NumP2, (see Watanabe 2010 for Japanese, Vazquez Rojas Maldonado 2012 for Purépecha (isolate, tsz), Dali and Mathieu 2021 for Tunisian Arabic (Afro-Asiatic, aeb)). By shedding light on the distinction between inclusive and exclusive plurals in Korean and the relationship between definiteness and plurality, we contribute to the current debate related to the distribution of the Korean plural.

An Exchange on, “Diversionary Dragons, or ‘Talking Tough in Taipei’”

2011 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.11 No.1

In “Diversionary Dragons, or ‘Talking Tough in Taipei’” (Journal of East Asian Studies 9, 3: 369–398), Yitan Li, Patrick James, and A. Cooper Drury presented a newly created data set to show that Chen Shui used independence rhetoric and confrontation with the mainland as a diversionary tactic in the face of domestic political difficulties. In the present exchange, Jonathan Sullivan challenges the authors’ understanding of how the Democratic Progressive Party used the Taiwan independence issue—and the authors’ interpretation of independence—and raises questions about the coding of press coverage as a means of identifying true preferences. The authors respond, concluding that the future use of such diversionary tactics is by no means foreclosed.

      • A Pyrrolyl-Based Triazolophane: A Macrocyclic Receptor With CH and NH Donor Groups That Exhibits a Preference for Pyrophosphate Anions

        Sessler, Jonathan L.,Cai, Jiajia,Gong, Han-Yuan,Yang, Xiaoping,Arambula, Jonathan F.,Hay, Benjamin P. American Chemical Society 2010 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.132 No.40

<P>A pyrrolyl-based triazolophane, incorporating CH and NH donor groups, acts as a receptor for the pyrophosphate anion in chloroform solution. It shows selectivity for this trianion, followed by HSO4− > H2PO4− > Cl− > Br− (all as the corresponding tetrabutylammonium salts), with NH−anion interactions being more important than CH−anion interactions. Dissecting Inchoatives and Causatives: English get constructions

Vol.22 No.3

Barrie, Michael Jonathan Mathew and Sung, Moonhyun. 2018. Dissecting Inchoatives and Causatives: English get Constructions. Language and Information, 22.3. 91-108. In this paper, we present data from English get-constructions and from Northern Iroquoian to challenge the recent consensus that in no languages are causatives built on inchoatives. Our data suggest the need for distinct functional projections for the causative and inchoative. We argue that while they are bundled in other situations, the functional heads for the causative and inchoative can be split as described in the present paper. This line of research follows recent trends in investigating the fine structure of the vP layer (Alexiadou et al. 2015, Harley 2013, Kim 2011, Marantz 2013, Pylkkänen 2008, Ramchand 2008, Legate 2014). We propose a syntactic mechanism for bundling and, in doing so, account for differences in the range of possible meanings with adverbs between canonical causatives and get-causatives. Briefly, get-causatives have unbundled causative and inchoative heads and have a wider ranger of adverbial meanings due to the projection of independent CausP and InchP. Canonical causatives have a bundled Caus-Inch head, projecting a single Caus/InchP, which leads to fewer sites for adverbs to adjoin and accordingly to a narrower range of adverbial meanings. Developing an Entrepreneurial Economy: Can Tanzania Create Five Million Jobs in Five Years?

2011 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.30 No.-

This paper demonstrates that by examining how entrepreneurial economies are developed and how they create jobs, one can show that in Tanzania it is possible to create five million jobs in five years. This can be accomplished by focusing attention on investments in social education and skills training, economic empowerment, community empowerment, sustenance of high economic growth, and appropriate state policies. In Tanzania training on entrepreneurship skills and management skills as one package should receive greater emphasis. It is clear that management is the organ, of society, that facilitates the transformation of resources into wealth.

Vol.- No.2

Wettability Studies of ITO Substrates Using Binary Mixture of Aniline and Alcohols

2012 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.17 No.-

This paper suggests a method to reduce electronic wastage by controlling the wetting of the substrates to enable reuse of the device in an effort to improve device control. If the devices were cleaned after a given operation, it can be reused. With this preliminary idea, the present investigation reports the concentration dependent wetting of indium tin oxide by aniline-alcohol binary liquid and shows how varying the concentration of the liquids can control the wetting phenomenon. This binary liquid system is an important prototype for the biological hydrogen bond interactions of N-H---O. Surface tension (liquid-liquid), adhesive energy (solid-liquid), surface energy of the substrate and contact angle of the liquids with the substrate are measured by using a contact angle goniometer.

Lymphomatoid Granulomatosis: CT and FDG-PET Findings

        Jonathan H. Chung,Carol C. Wu,Matthew D. Gilman,Edwin L. Palmer,Robert P. Hasserjian,Jo-Anne O. Shepard 대한영상의학회 2011 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.12 No.6

Objective: Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LG) is a rare, aggressive extranodal Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive B-cell lymphoproliferative disease. The purpose of our study was to analyze the CT and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) findings of pulmonary LG. Materials and Methods: Between 2000 and 2009, four patients with pathologically proven pulmonary LG and chest CT were identified. Two of these patients also had FDG-PET. Imaging features of LG on CT and PET were reviewed. Results: Pulmonary nodules or masses with peribronchovascular, subpleural, and lower lung zonal preponderance were present in all patients. Central low attenuation (4 of 4 patients), ground-glass halo (3 of 4 patients), and peripheral enhancement (4 of 4 patients) were observed in these nodules and masses. An air-bronchogram and cavitation were seen in three of four patients. FDG-PET scans demonstrated avid FDG uptake in the pulmonary nodules and masses. Conclusion: Pulmonary LG presents with nodules and masses with a lymphatic distribution, as would be expected for a lymphoproliferative disease. However, central low attenuation, ground-glass halo and peripheral enhancement of the nodules/masses are likely related to the angioinvasive nature of this disease. Peripheral enhancement and ground-glass halo, in particular, are valuable characteristic not previously reported that can help radiologists suggest the diagnosis of pulmonary LG.
